    Angels acquire Garland for Cabrera

    Almost missed this one: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...2007&fext=.jsp

Not sure what to think, really. I guess if the Angels end up getting Tejada or Miguel Cabrera, it should be a good deal. Garland ought to be better than Ervin Santana or Colon, at least.

Colon is something like 2 or 3 years from a cy young award, he has been injuried but his fastball came back to at the end of last year. The Angels will win the AL west next year and possible even go farther in the WS.

since the angels got garland, they will be a force to be reckoned with.

Well, that's the thing. If Colon is healthy again, he'll be great. Otherwise... Garland is a good pitcher in his own right, and he's certainly worth having in order to replace Santana and/or back up Colon.

Garland's a great fourth starter. He's extremely durable, will give you league average or better pitching, and will likely see a decrease in his ERA moving from hitter-friendly U.S. Cellular out to LA. I like this deal from the Angels standpoint. White Sox, not so much.

Garland won 18 games 2 years in a row and was basicly .500 this year on a team that was not very good. Another bad move by the Sox, Angles looking to have a solid rotation next year, might be one of the best staff's in baseball if everyone performs to their ability.

Garland got lucky on balls in play in 2005. It was clearly an outlier year. But, he basically pitched the same in 2006 and 2007. The difference in records had to do with the rest of his team, not his pitching.

I guess the only thing now is waiting for the other shoe to drop in terms of...who does Anaheim grab to play shortstop?

I think they can do fine with either Maicer Izturis or Erick Aybar, or some combination thereof.

Eh, I'm not so sure he'll handle a shift back to shortstop well...or that his bat his ready.

You may be right about the shift back to SS, but I think his bat is more than ready.

This could make a Miguel Cabrera trade much more likely, however. Because it gives them the flexibility to include Ervin Santana, or another starting pitcher.

I think Garland is one of the better guys to have at the 4 or 5 spot. As mentioned, extremely durable and has staying power. Good stuff and a welcomed addition to any team.
