Oh man, the thing that drives the most NUTS when I'm watching baseball is not hustling. These guys make a terrific living (way way above the average Joes' salary) for playing a game six or seven days a week six or seven months a year. Is it too much to ask to run out your at-bats???? I mean, there are some that are famous for it (Manny Ramirez), but I see it all the time. You get 4, sometimes 5 AB's a game. Is it too much to ask to run hard 4 or 5 times a day for millions of dollars a year???? Drives me nuts.

So, I'm watching the Nationals/Cardinals game and it happens. Glad it was the Cardinals since the Nats got a DP out of it, but boy it drives me crazy. St. Louis has a man on first, one out, and Molina the catcher comes up. He hits a high fly pop up to the second baseman. He trots out of the batters box with his head down. Ronnie Belliard of the Nats, in a great display of baseball knowledge, lets the ball drop at his feet, picks it, fires to first for the force of Molina, and they then tag out the baserunner in a rundown for the double play. Serves him right, and every time those spoiled brat rich kids don't hustle out an at-bat I wish the same **** thing would happen.

End of rant.

Infield Fly Rule goes into effect if there are men on first and second, or second and third.. Or bases loaded.. With less than two out..

From this description, there was one on.. So no infield fly..

Correct, sort of. There is no infield fly rule with just one man on. The infield fly rule is only in effect with men on 1st and 2nd or the bases are loaded, and there are less than two outs. Those are the only times infield fly rule are in effect. Its not in effect with runners on second and third because those runners aren't "forced" to advance.

The reason it's not necessary in the case above is because the only thing the Cardinals needed to do to avoid the double play was to have THE BATTER RUN HARD TO FIRST. IS THAT SO MUCH TO ASK??? Oh man, sorry, I ranted again. Got to work on that. Therapy maybe????

Nice rant. For what it's worth, I agree. If I were LaRussa, I'd probably sit Molina for at least the remainder of the game for that garbage.

Yep, I agree, AT LEAST for the remainder of that game. But do you know how many times I've seen Manny Ramirez loaf??? And for that matter, Barry Bonds as well. I know he's in his 40's, but he's still getting payed a lot of money, it's not too much to ask to run out 4 at bats a night. Whoa, there I go again. I'm tellin ya, since I've been watching baseball this is the one thing that's changed that really drives me nuts. I mean when I played my manager would take a large chunk out of my a$$ for doing that.

Manny kills me. He regularly gives back hits too. There have been a lot of times when he was just shuffling down the line and there's been an errant throw, or a bobble at SS and he just pis*ed away a hit. Serve him right if he wound up his career with 2985 hits.

Yeah, I mentioned Manny in my first post as he is famous for it. In fact the Boston announcers have a phrase for it now. "It's just Manny being Manny." I'm sorry, not good enough. The guy is gifted enough that he could wake up from a month long coma and get out of bed and get a hit, but he's also cost the Red Sox SO MANY times that I wouldn't want to put up with it. He's another one of those guys I don't really like, but like I said, as far as pure hitters go, he's one of the all time best.

Same here. I don't not like him, I just don't like the way he plays the game a lot of times. I'm actually looking forward to the end of his contract. I know he's one of the greats but it's equal parts greatness and bad or lazy play. Like you said SCRE E E EA A A A A M M MM MMMMM!

I agree, I hate it when these guys don't run out balls. When I played baseball for the school team, I had a good amount of speed, and I could hit a grounder to short or 3rd and almost always beat it out by running hard.

That is such a good point because if you watch as many games as I do you will notice it too. Not necessarily beating out routine ground balls, but I can't tell you how many times on a routine ground ball the fielder will bobble it, or has a hard time getting a grip out of the glove, or such a combination of things and if the runner had been running all out speed he would've been safe. Baseball is still a TEAM game. If you're safe at first because of a hit OR AN ERROR, you're still safe at first. MAN, I wish these guys just realized how lucky they are to be making a great living playing a game and would just give 100% when they're doing it. Nice to know others out there feel the same as me. I've seen the game change quite a bit over my lifetime (change is inevitable), but this is the one thing that burns me up more than any other change. Loafing is almost acceptable today. Unacceptable to me.

Oh, I have to disagree a bit at least. I watch the Yankees a lot, and the second baseman (Cano I think???) I have seen do the same thing MULTIPLE TIMES. And when Sheffield was a Yankee, he could loaf a time or two down the first base line. I'm sorry, I don't think its a team thing, its more a generational thing. It's just different today. I'm probably wrong and DEFINITELY have no way to prove it, it just feels different today. Probably just ranting from some old fat guy though, so feel free to disregard.
