    Re: The Expos

    October 31 2029 - Game 7

Every ticket at Stade Andre Dawson was sold and the fans were gathered in great anticipation. For the first time, a World Series-deciding game was to be held on 'foreign' soil, with the Expos hosting the Angels.

Lucas O'Neal threw the first pitch, against former Expos darling Josh Hollick, who duly singled into the right field and was advanced to third base by subsequent batters. The Montreal team survived the innings without further incident.

Another former Expo in Jonathan Twombly took the mound for the Angels and also had his first pitch hit deep into the outfield, this time courtesy of Ted Christiansen. At the bottom of the second inning, Montreal got the scoring underway through two home runs from Tony Paige and Craig Overy. Montreal 2 Los Angeles 0

The joy at the Expos lead was shortlived, as less than five minutes later, Ben Breuer homered over deep left-center for two runs, advancing Josh Hollick around the plates. Montreal 2 Los Angeles 2

The teams were locked up until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Craig Overy hit his second home run of the game, this time into the raptous right-field bleachers. Montreal 3 Los Angeles 2

Once again, the Angels had an immediate answer, this time grabbing the upper hand after they loaded the bases. Los Angeles 4 Montreal 3

At the start of the sixth innings, both starting pitchers were retired, with Nathan Derby replacing O'Neal, his work done for another season.

In the seventh inning, Derby gave up a run with the Angels hitting a succession of singles. The fans in the bleachers started to feel a bit forlorn and apprehensive at the sight of the score midway through the inning: Los Angeles 5 Montreal 3

Ted Christiansen reduced the defecit by one run when he sent another home run over the fence in the bottom of the seventh. Los Angeles 5 Montreal 4

Jason Kidwell came in the game replacing Nathan Derby, and held the potent Angels attack in a scoreless inning. The Expos had the start of an opportunity, although with two outs in the bottom of the eight, things were looking dire. Tony Paige stood up to the plate and singled into the right field. With two runners on the base, the last thing Josh Hollick would have wanted was to give Montreal a lifeline, but that's exactly what he did. Craig Overy hit the ball directly towards the stubbord third baseman, who bobbled the ball in his glove. By the time he had composed himself, he tried in vain to throw the ball to the first baseman. However, by that stage Overy was already safe, while Blake Woolhouse had run behind Hollick to be safe at third. Bases loaded.

Enter Joe Lung, the journeyman outfielder who had played his first season in Montreal off the bench. Wilfredo Alberty's pitch was good, but the contact was better. Woolhouse ran home for the tying run, while Paige decided to make a break for home. The throw, like the pitch, was fine. However, Paige extended his arms out as far as they could go and touched the home base a full second before the tag could be made by his opposite number. Montreal 6 Los Angeles 5

At the end of the eighth inning, the Expos held a 6-5 lead, giving Jamie Olinger the chance to pitch out the game against his former team. His first pitch was grounded straight back to him, but Dwight Dolan reached first after Olinger did a 'Hollick' and bobbled the ball in his glove.

Joe Rennick took to the plate and hit the ball directly into the air, to be caught by the catcher Paige. One out.

Mark Elliott then took strike and sent a ball deep into the outfield, to be caught by Woolhouse. The Montreal Expos were one out away from a World Series title

Justin Kramer had already won a World Series ring, yet he had never faced a situation quite like this, with 50,000 crazy Canadians all yelling and screaming. With one runner already on base, he could potentially give the Angels back the lead with one well-timed swing. It was worth a go. Olinger lined up and pitched away.

Contact was made. The ball accelerated high into the air where Woolhouse was waiting. He took five, six, seven steps backwards and reached high above his head, falling over to his right side and holding the glove above the ground at all times. He stood up and simply took the ball out of his glove and held it to the crowd.

The celebrations afterwards were insane, with authorities later estimating that over two million residents of the Montreal district converged in the downtown area to celebrate the Expos' first World Series victory. Lucas O'Neal was named MVP, capping off a memorable month where he also won the NLDS MVP, NLCS MVP and the Cy Young award.

    That memorable October
Oakland Athletics d. New York Yankees 3-1
Los Angeles Angels d. Detroit Tigers 3-0
Montreal Expos d. St Louis Cardinals 3-0
Chicago Cubs d. San Francisco Giants 3-2

Los Angeles Angels d. Oakland Athletics 4-3
Montreal Expos d. Chicago Cubs 3-2

Montrel Expos d. Los Angeles Angels 4-3
