    Re: The Expos

    April 2025

Montreal finished the month six games behind division leaders New York with a slightly disappointing 11-13 record. Just four games into the season, the Cincinnati Reds gave Montreal a lesson in baseball, smashing the Expos 16-2 in a game that offered very few positives for Canadian fans. Montreal recovered largely due to a high number of games against the hapless Florida Marlins, winning five of six encounters between the two clubs.

Ultimately it was the Mets who finished the Expos' month with a shutout performance from premier pitcher Mike Wibberley (formerly of Philadelphia) leading the way.

    Re: The Expos

    May 2025

A disastrous month for the Montreal club saw them sink to the bottom of the NL East. Montreal would win just six games for the month, and one on the road. Along the way, they were swept by division rivals Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York, and also by the upstart Tampa Bay Rays.

    Re: The Expos

    June 2025

The Montreal stone continued to sink this month, winning only eight games. The entire offense apperared to be in a crisis of confidence, with Ted Christiansen 'leading' the averages with an imposing .241.

Despite pressure from fans, the Expos management refused to make any drastic changes to the roster, preferring to give their young roster the stability and time needed to develop to the next level.

The same could not be said however about pitcher Lucas O'Neal, whose contract extension talks broke down with Expos management during the month. With O'Neal entering free agency at the end of the year, it seemed very likely that Montreal would seek to trade him before the deadline of July 31.

    NL East
    1. New York (51-27)
    2. Atlanta (43-35)
    3. Florida (36-43)

    Re: The Expos

    July 2025

Same old story for the Expos, going 8-19 for the month.

However, the season finished on a bright note, with O'Neal eventually agreeing to sign a new $120m contract to be spread out over 6 years. Importantly, there was no no-trade clause attached to the contract, meaning that the door was open for a move by the 27-year old pitcher in the future.

    Re: The Expos

With the Expos going through another poor season, management took a drastic decision that could affect the very viability of the franchise. The audacious goal was to propell Montreal into the World Series inside five years. However, the only way that that could happen was to infate the team payroll to levels where the franchise could go into debt inside three years.

The accountants who ran the numbers argued that every other team in the MLB ran well over their respective payroll budgets, and yet managed to survive through offloading their highly-paid players at the opportune time.

A big signing (or three) could also draw in more fans through the turnstiles, generating more revenue for the club and placing the club into a better position to challenge in the NL East.

The decision was therefore made - Montreal could not play like a contender until it spent like a contender.

    Re: The Expos

    April-May 2026

Featuring a more explosive offense than in years past, the Montreal Expos got off to a fast start in the new season, winning their first five games. Former Texas Ranger Ron Blow led the way, hitting six home runs in his first month as an Expos. Second baseman Remy Swanston had a much improved month as well, hitting .369 compared to his 2025 record of just .243. Pitcher Lucas O'Neal, now in his eighth season with the club, won each of his first five starts. At the end of April, Montreal held a 15-9 record, just one win behind the Mets.

Montreal hit the division lead on May 11 after sweeping Arizona on their home turf as Swanston hit a purple patch of form, lifting 10 home runs over the fence in May alone. Montreal travelled to Toronto for inter-league play and had their colours lowered, winning the first game but being held scoreless in the next two. Florida surprisingly won a series under the Stade Andre Dawson roof, while the Braves swept Montreal in Atlanta.

By the end of the month, Montreal had a 29-22 record, good enough for second place. They were also one game behind the Cardinals in the Wildcard race.

    Re: The Expos

    June-July 2026

The Montreal Expos exploded into life this month, winning 23 games in their most successful month in nearly 60 years of franchise history. During the month they recorded winning streaks of 5, 7 and 9 games and surged to the top of the table with a lead of six games, losing just one series, to the lowly Pirates.

Lucas O'Neal emerged as a real Cy Young Award contender, having recorded a 13-3 record to date with a league-best ERA of 1.99. Shortstop Ted Chirstiansen continued his excellent form, improving his 2025 batting average by 100 points.

The run extended into the month of July, with the Expos holding a seven game lead by the time the All-Star festivities started. The wheels wobbled off the cart slightly after the break, with the Expos' lead cut to four games, before a season-defining series against the Mets, which could see Montreal put its stamp of authority on the NL East. Montreal smashed the Mets 13-2 in the first game and were never headed in the series, finishing the month of July with 70 wins in the bank and an impressive ten game lead.

    Re: The Expos

    August-September-October 2026

The first of August saw Hurricane Jacob sweep over the Florida peninsula, causing billions of dollars of damage over widespread parts of the state, including the cities of Miami and Tampa. With the stadiums in the two cities unsuitable for baseball, the Commissioner decided that for the remainder of the season the Rays and Marlins would play exclusively on the road, with several series planned for the cities of Washington, Charlotte, Richmond, New Orleans, Nashville and San Antonio. The most cynical of observers would note that each of these locations were effectively auditioning for a future MLB franchise, with the Brewers and Rays in serious financial trouble and potentially looking for a new home.

On the field, the Expos kept going on their winning ways, cracking 81 wins on August 14, the earliest date it had done so in franchise history, and just their 17th winning season in 58 seasons. Their 11 game lead at the beginning of September had been reduced to 7 midway through the month, following losses at Atlanta and in Washington against the Marlins. In the process of pitching his 21st win of the season, Lucas O'Neal put himself out of action for a fortnight, with a spiked foot. The news came on the same night that the Expos sealed the East Division, with a 12-2 win against the Diamondbacks in Montreal.

Montreal finished with a disappointing four straight losses, but had still won 98 games, their best result since winning the National League championship in 1980.
