    MLB Retirements:

Steve Barber retired this week after being released by the Montreal Expos. Barber pitched for 14 years for the Expos, and the Baltimore Orioles (1960-1971). He ended his career with a mark of 158-103 with a 3.17 ERA. His best year came in 1963 when he went 20-13 with a 2.75 ERA. He was a 3 time All-Star (1963,66,67) and 5 seasons with an ERA under 3.

    MLB Injuries:

The Cincinnati Reds are getting closer in the San Fransisco Giants rear view mirror these days and it just became harder for the Giants to hold them off as they lose starting RF Oscar Brown until next June after Brown blew out his knee rounding 2nd base this week. Brown was hitting .325 12-54 on the year after hitting .281 5-29 a year ago. The Giants, once holders of a 15 game lead in the NL West have seen that lead shrink to just 5 1/2.

Up next for Boston is 3 more in New York against the Yankees followed by 3 in California against the Angels.

August 23,24,25 at New York Yankees (69-54)

August 23-Jonah Stickles had a perfect game for 7 2/3 innings, then gave up 3 straight hits and 2 runs, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead entering the 9th inning. Dwight Evans came up, and with one out in the top of the 9th, hit a 2 run HR giving Boston a 3-2 win over New York. (87-37)
    W-Jonah Stickles (10-4) L-Wayne Simpson (13-7) S-Sparky Lyle (30)

August 24-Tony Conigliaro went 3-4 with 3 RBI and Toby Harrah added a pair of runs batted in, as Boston doubled up New York, 6-3. (88-37)
    W-Fergie Jenkins (22-5) L-Mel Stottlemyre (14-7)

August 25-Reggie Smith (36), and Billy Grabarkewitz (16) each hit 2 run homeruns as Boston completed the sweep of the Yankees, winning easily 7-2. (89-37)
    W-Gary Nolan (13-7) L-Chris Nelson (13-10)

August 26,27,28 at California Angels (65-61)

August 26-Reggie Smith went 2-3 with his 37th and 38th homeruns of the year, driving in 3, and every Sox starter had at least one hit as Boston took the first game of the series, beating California 8-5. In the 5th inning, Tony Conigliaro hit his 300th career HR, a 2 run shot off Marty Pattin. (90-37)
    W-Vern Ruhle (6-3) L-Catfish Hunter (8-14) S-Sparky Lyle (31)

August 27-Jim Fregosi went 3-5 with 2 RBI, and Marcelino Lopez pitched 7 innings, allowing just 2 runs as the Angels beat Boston 5-2. (90-38)
    W-Marcelino Lopez (9-8) L-Roger Moret (7-7) S-John Strohmayer (6)

    W-Fergie Jenkins (23-5) L-Andy Messersmith (14-8)

    MLB Milestones:

Jim Northrup of the Detroit Tigers hit for the cycle

    MLB Retirements:

Oddly, the Cincinnati Reds had two players retire on them in the heat of a pennant race. First 3B Max Alvis retired after 12 years in the bigs. Alvis played for Cleveland (1962-68). New York (AL) (1969-71) and the Reds (72-74). Alvis was a career .253 hitter with 177 HR and 613 RBI. His best season arguably came in 1969 with the Yankees when he hit .283 18-73 with 30 doubles. He made one All-Star team in 1965.

The second retirement was a bit of a shocker as Hank Aaron retired after 20 major league seasons. Aaron played for Milwaukee/Atlanta (1954-1970), Montreal (1971-72) and Cincinnati (1973-74). Aaron retired #3 on the all time homerun list, behind Willie Mays and Babe Ruth, with 624 homeruns and 2005 RBI. which is also 3rd all time. Aaron played in 2849 games, recording 3334 hits (6th all time), a .304 average, and 1920 runs scored. Aaron was a 17 time All-Star (1955-1971), 4 time Gold Glove Winner (1958,59,1960, 1971), and won the MVP in 1957 when he hit .322 44-132.

    MLB Injuries:

Couple of major injuries that could affect the playoff races. First, Philadelphia lost 1B Joe Lis for the year with a broken hip. Lis was hitting .294 34-96 so far on the year after hitting .274 27-107 last year. Veteran Glen Clark will move into the lineup to replace Lis.

St. Louis will also be without the services of Tim McCarver for the rest of the season after he suffered a broken bone in his back in a home plate collison. McCarver was hitting .293 14-70 this year after missing most of last year, hitting .340 3-18. Former Royals C Ellie Rodriguez becomes the starter.

Ending August and into September for the Sox are 3 games at home against the Brewers followed by 3 on the road against the Cleveland Indians. Before the Indians series however, will be team stats, league standings and a final minor league report!

Hmm....I wonder if the San Francisco Giants have enforcers 'encouraging' Reds players to retire....

Way to go Dwight, it woulda been a crime if Stickles lost that one.

    Re: Impossible Dream???

Cat: It may not have been the Giants, but the Atlanta Braves, who have caught the Reds as both teams sit 6 games behind the Giants. What will be very interesting though is the Reds and Giants play each other 15 times in September, so it's still very up in the air.

Overbay: "Dewey" is going to be a fine ballplayer. My only concern is he always seems unhappy, not really enjoying himself. I just hope that he can get past it, as I don't want to see this end like it ended with Don Baylor.

Hm, sounds like the NLW is going to be a maelstrom until the end.

    MLB Contract News:

Lots of contract happenings this past week. First the Cincinnati Reds tied up one of their key bats, signing Tony Perez to a 5 year deal worth $350,000 per year. Perez is hitting .310 26-94 on the year, and is a career .298 hitter with 228 HR and 964 RBI. This deal locks up Perez until he is 38 years old.

Atlanta and Joe Rudi have come to terms on a 4 year deal worth a total of $864,000. Rudi has had his finest season this year, his first with the Braves, hitting .283 13-65. He played previously for the San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox.

The Yankees and Al Bumbry have agreed on a 2 year deal worth $131,000 per year. Bumbry is hitting .236 10-52 with 14 steals, his first full season with New York. This deal will take Bumbry through the 1976 season.

    MLB Retirements:

In an odd scenario, 41 year old OF Rocky Colavito has walked away from the Red Sox, and retired in the middle of a pennant race. Colavito is quoted as saying, "I just don't have the drive, and I shouldn't stay around and keep the Red Sox organization from finding my replacement before the playoffs. Me leaving now allows the team to see if Gorman Thomas can help this year or not."
Colavito was hitting .221 8-18 this year in just 77 AB's. He retires having played for Cleveland (1955-1959), Detroit (1960-63), Kansas City A's (1964), Cleveland again (1965-67), Boston 1967-68), New York Mets (1968-1972), Kansas City Royals (1973), and Boston again (1973-74). He hit a career 507 homeruns, good for 10th overall and he drove in 1607 runs, 16th all time. Colavito ended his career with 2323 hits, while walking 1231 times (15th all time) and striking out 1200 (19th all time). He made 8 All-Star teams (1959,1961,62,64,65,66,67,68). In 1967 he lead the American League in homeruns with 40.

Next for the Sox is 3 games at home against the Detroit Tigers followed by 3 on the road against the Baltimore Orioles.
