    Red Sox Trade News:

Boston made a couple of moves this week, first selling 19 year old OF Greg Gross to the Cincinnati Reds for $189,000 in cash. Gross could turn into a solid ball player, but he is stuck behind 4 or 5 better talents in the Sox system.

The second deal saw Boston send IF Joe Foy to the Cleveland Indians for 3 prospects, 2B Duane Kuiper, P Dick Tidrow, and OF Rick Manning. Foy had been our utility infielder for the last 5 years backing up every position, and his versatility will be missed. However, he was going to be replace with Billy Grabarkewitz next year, so we felt he should get the opportunity this season. I don't expect any of the prospects to turn into all-stars, but they should be solid backups in the future.

Ending June for the Sox is 3 games in Cleveland against the Indians followed by 3 in Texas to face the Rangers!

    MLB Trade News:
It was a busy All-Star break, deal-wise, below took place over the last week or so:

St. Louis sends P Darold Knowles, P Tim Plodinec, 3B Phil Gagliano, P Wayne Granger, P Matthew Lowdermilk
    Cincinnati sends SS Dave Concepcion

Cincy gets much needed bullpen help, but gives up a 24 year old rock in the middle infield.

Oakland sends P Bob Lacey C Jeff Newman
    Cincinnati sends P Darold Knowles
Good move for Oakland, they give up to "c" prospects for a solid bullpen arm

Montreal sends RF Hank Aaron, P Paul Gilliford, P Dave LaRoche, LF Jeff Jurak, P Chris Nelson
Cincinnati sends OF Vada Pinson, LF Hal McRae
Another great move for the Expos as they are apparantely going for it this year. Nelson was tough to give up, but McRae is only 27, and is hitting .322 this year, and Pinson adds much needed veteran experience.

Up next will be the All-Star festivities!

    Red Sox Trade News:

The Sox made two separate deals this past week to try to stabilize a bullpen that has imploded over the last month. First we sent injured OF Joe Lahoud to the Pittsburgh Pirates for shortman Gene Garber. Garber was 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 31 games this year covering 40 innings for the Pirates. Lahoud was hitting .248 5-16 so far this year, but was oft-injured.

Second, we called up young lefthander Ron Guidry to play the long relief/spot starter role, and in doing so, made Larry Jaster obselete. We sold Jaster to the Atlanta Braves for $224,000. (By the way, I put a cap on cash sales at $250,000.) Guidry was 13-3 2.68 in AAA this year, and is expected to be in the starting rotation next year.

    Around the MLB:

One notable retirement as single season homerun champ Roger Maris retired from the game after 15 seasons. Maris hit 61 homeruns in 1961, breaking Babe Ruth's single season record of 60. He hit a total of 312 homeruns with Cleveland, Kansas City, New York (AL), St. Louis, Seattle/Milwaukee, and retired with New York (AL) again after just 2 games.

Up next for the Sox is 3 games in Milwaukee against the Brewers followed by 3 more at home against the Orioles!

    Re: Impossible Dream???

July 28,29,30 at Baltimore Orioles (52-47)

July 28-Trailing 3-2 entering the 8th inning, Boston put up 4 in the 8th and 5 in the 9th, lead by 3 RBI from both Larry Bowa and Reggie Smith as Boston beat Baltimore 11-3. (71-32)
    W-Dock Ellis (14-5) L-Jan Dukes (3-5)

July 29-Brooks Robinson hit a 2 run HR, and Fred Talbot pitched 7 2/3 innings of 1 run ball as the Orioles beat the Red Sox 3-1. (71-33)
    W-Fred Talbot (4-5) L-Roger Moret (13-5) S-Jan Dukes (5)

July 30-Trailing 7-0 into the 7th inning, the Sox scored 3 in the 7th and 4 in the 8th to tie the score, only to see Paul Blair hit his 2nd HR of the game, a solo shot off closer Sparky Lyle in the bottom of the 9th as Baltimore beat Boston 8-7. (71-34)
    W-Jan Dukes (4-5) L-Sparky Lyle (4-1)

August 1,2,3 at Baltimore Orioles (54-48)

August 1-Tony Conigliaro hit a 3 run shot, his 17th and Rico Petrocelli added a 2 run blast, his 26th as Boston hammered Baltimore 11-3. (72-34)
    W-Bill Lee (9-8) L-Dave Roberts (7-7)

August 2-Curt Blefary hit a 3 run HR, and Davey Johnson had a 2 run HR as the Orioles knocked around Denny McClain and the Sox, winning 6-1. (72-35)
    W-Woodie Fryman (11-6) L-Denny McClain (12-4)

August 3-Reggie Smith had 3 hits anda 2 run HR, and Art Shamsky hit a HR in his first game back from the DL as Boston took two of three from the Orioles, winning 7-5. (73-35)
    W-Dock Ellis (15-5) L-Fred Talbot (4-6)

    MLB Trade Deadline News:
The Sox made one move at the deadline, coming to terms with the San Fransisco Giants on a deal that sees OF Ben Ogilive (69/93) and $210,000 come to the Sox organization in exchange for 26 year old Oscar Brown (85/93). Brown was hitting .314 5-24 this year, including .382/.443/.555 against lefties, but under .200 against righties. Ogilive is a couple years away, but should be the better player when it's all done.

    Other Deals:
Pittsburgh sends 1B Ken Harrelson, P Jim Sadowski, P Jeff James, 3B Ken Macha, P Tim Jones, P Kent Tekulve, C Hawk Taylor, SS Bucky Dent, and 2B Fernando Gonzalez
    Texas sends P Gerry Schoen
Don't understand this at all. Schoen is a decent pitcher, but to give up 9 players for him......

    Cincinnati sends P Sammy Ellis
Los Angeles sends P Vern Ruhle
Nice deal for the Reds as they give up an aging starter for a possible ace. Also helps the Dodgers solidify an already solid pitching staff.

Kansas City sends 2B Chris Arnold
Baltimore sends P Randy Miller, RF Bob Bailor
Eh, couple of "C+" type prospects for one "B" prospect.

    Cleveland sends P Ron Scheuler
Baltimore sends P Scott McGregor, P Dave Johnson
Scheuler is better now, but McGregor, Baltimore's 1st round pick this year, could be special.

    Cleveland sends P Tom Kelley
Los Angeles sends P Don Carrithers
Another nice, "Move for the future" deal by the Indians.

Oops, I forgot to post team stats and league standings. It is now August 4, so everything will be as of then! After that the Sox come home for 3 against the AL West leading Chicago White Sox followed by 3 more on the road, this time against the Cleveland Indians.
