    Around the MLB:

    Pittsburgh sends OF Gene Clines
    Philadelphia sends 1B Larry Fritz
I like this trade for the Pirates as moving Clines allows them to finally start promising youngster Al Bumbry, and Fritz is their 1B of the future.

    Injury News:
Dick Allen of the Philadelphia Phillies was lost for the season after injuring his rotator cuff. Allen had surgery this week and is expected to be out of action until mid 1973.

Up next for the Sox is 3 games at home against the Texas Rangers followed by 3 in California against the Angels.

May 23-Joe Lahoud continued his resurgence, upping his average to .254 by hitting a HR, and Bill Lee pitched 7 solid innings as Boston beat the Angels 5-3. (36-11)
    W-Rollie Fingers (3-3) L-Pete Cimino (2-1) S-Sparky Lyle (19)

May 24-Tony Conigliaro (10), Don Baylor (10), Toby Harrah (5), and Ted Simmons (4), all hit homeruns, and Denny McClain pitched 7 2/3 innings of scoreless ball before giving up a grand slam to Rick Reichardt as Boston beat the Angels 8-4. (37-11)
    W-Denny McClain (5-1) L-Clyde Wright (6-5)

    Around the MLB:
    Montreal sends P Bruce Houston
Pittsburgh sends OF Al Oliver 2B Jose Martinez
Another nice trade for the Pirates as they get an up and coming starting pitcher, and while Oliver is tough to give up, the Pirates problem is pitching, not hitting.

Up next for the Sox is a 6 game homestand which sees the Detroit Tigers come to town first followed by the California Angels!

May 29-The Sox had 6 stright two out singles, ending in a 5 run inning and the Sox bullpen made it stand up as Boston outlasted California 7-5. (39-14)
    W-Denny McClain (7-1) L-Andy Messersmith (5-5) S-Sparky Lyle (20)

May 30-Don Baylor went 2-4 with 2 RBI, and Toby Harrah went 4-4 with 3 runs scored as Boston took two of three from California, winning 6-2. (40-14)
    W-Dock Ellis (7-3) L-Marcelino Lopez (5-3)

    MLB Trade News:
Montreal sends P Lance Clemons P Terry Cox 3B Terry Hughes
    Cincinnati sends 1B Lee May
Nice trade for Montreal as they trade some of their excess minor league talent for a proven starting 1B.

    Around the MLB:
Ron Santo of the Kansas City Royals scored his 1000th run

Up next for the Sox, ending May and into June is 3 games in Minnesota against the Twins followed by 3 in KC against the Royals. Prior to that however will be the Amateur Draft!

    23) St. Louis-Rob Dressler (P)
    24) Boston-Ken Phelps (1B)--Mountain of a man, hit just .228 as a senior but blasted 14 HR's and drove in 41 RBI in 45 games. Hit .310 as a junior with 17 HR and 35 in 38 games. Hit 54 homeruns in 165 career H.S. games, with a 157/93 BB/K ratio.

2nd Round (48th overall)-Donnie Moore (RP)--Given a few years, could compliment the young talent coming up in the Sox system for relief pitchers. Saved 19 of 20 games in High School, posting a 2.15 ERA as a senior 23 K's in 29 innings.

    3rd Round (72nd overall)-Don Aase (RP)--2-1 2.41 with a 30/8 K/BB ratio in 33.2 IP's. Never blew a save in H.S. saving 13 games perfectly.

4th Round (96th overall)-Willie Aikens (1B)--Another power hitting 1B, who hit .386 with 11 HR and 35 RBI in 36 games as a senior. Also hit .301 with 11 HR and 44 RBI as a junior.

5th Round (120th overall)-Denny Walling (IF)--Hit .427 with 4 HR and 38 RBI in 33 games as a senior. Projects to a utility infielder with a good eye as evidenced by his career 78/33 BB/K ratio in H.S.

6th Round (144th overall)-Roy Lee Jackson (RP)--3-0 3.21 as senior. Will be surprised if he ever makes the big club.

    Re: Impossible Dream???

June 6,7,8 at Milwaukee Brewers (23-34)

June 6-In a wild game, Jose Cruz hit an RBI single off Cecil Upshaw in the bottom of the 9th inning, as Milwaukee beat Boston 9-8 in a game that also featured 20 hits and 6 errors. (45-16)
    W-Brian Shill (1-1) L-Cecil Upshaw (2-1)

June 7-Don Baylor hit a 2 run HR, his 13th, Jim French hit a 2 run double, and Bill Lee pitched 7 shutout innings as Boston blanked the Brewers 6-0. (46-16)
    W-Bill Lee (5-5) L-Dennis Bennett (2-6)

June 8-Toby Harrah (7) homered and drove in 5, and Art Shamsky continued his hot play hitting his 8th as Boston beat up on Milwaukee 12-5. (47-16)
    W-Denny McClain (9-1) L-Don Secrist (2-2) S-Cecil Upshaw (1)

    June 9,10,11 v Texas Rangers (32-31)

June 9-Rico Petrocelli went 3-3 including a game winning 2 run single off closer Bob Allen in the bottom of the 9th as Boston capped a comeback that saw them down 4-0 to eventually win 5-4. (48-16)
    W-Rollie Fingers (6-3) L-Bob Allen (3-4)

June 10-Dave Moates homered and drove in a pair, and Gene Martin added a 2 run single as Texas hammered the Sox 9-2. (48-17)
    W-Milt Pappas (5-4) L-Roger Moret (9-2)

June 11-Tony Muser hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game, and then Reggie Smith ended it with a 2 run blast to right as Boston took two of three from Texas winning 4-2. (49-17)
    W-Cecil Upshaw (3-1) L-Jerry Reuss (5-8)

    Around the MLB:

Nothing really to note except Tony Conigliaro has suffered through a season of nagging injuries and this really concerns me going forward as other than Don Baylor, Tony C. is our only true power hitter, and while Art Shamsky has produced well, he's not capable of 40+ HR's. Looking ahead, youngster Dwight Evans has made real strides since picking him up from KC and could well be the starting right fielder in a year or two.

Up next for the Sox is 3 at home against the KC Royals followed by Detroit coming to the Fens for 3.
