    Re: Impossible Dream???

    May 28,29,30 v California Angels (28-20)

May 28-C Bob Tillman drove in 3 runs, and Rico Petrocelli added a solo HR as Boston beat the Angels 7-4. (36-19)
    W-Bucky Brandon (4-3) L-Clyde Wright (6-5) S-Don McMahon (17)

May 29-Rico Petrocelli and Boomer Scott each had a pair of RBI, and Dennis Bennett pitched 7 innings, allowing just 5 hits, giving the Sox a 5-2 win. (37-19)
    W-Dennis Bennett (5-3) L-Marcelino Lopez (3-1)

May 30-Bobby Knoop drove in the lone run of the game with a sac fly in the 7th inning, and 37 year old Jack Sanford pitched a complete game 3 hit shutout, leading the Angels to a 1-0 win. (37-20)
    W-Jack Sanford (3-2) L-Jerry Stephenson (1-3)

May 31, June 1,2 at Detroit Tigers (31-20)

May 31-Going into the bottom of the 7th inning, Boston had a 7-3 lead, 14 runs and 19 hits later, the Angels beat Boston 17-7. Dick McAuliffe hit 2 homeruns and drove in 7 in the win. (37-21)
    W-Dave Wickersham (2-0) L-John Wyatt (2-1)

June 1-Earl Wilson pitched a complete game shutout scattering 8 hits, and Dick McAuliffe drove in both Tiger runs in a 2-0 Detroit win. (37-22)
    W-Earl Wilson (6-4) L-Lee Stange (4-3)

June 2-4 Different Red Sox hit solo HR's, as Boston avoided the sweep, beating Detroit 5-2. (38-22)
    W-Bucky Brandon (5-3) L-Mickey Lolich (4-6) S-Don McMahon (18)

    Around the MLB:

There were a couple of trades that went down that didn't involve the Red Sox. First, the Chicago Cubs sent P Don Larsen, SS Roger Meztger, C Freddie Velazquez, and 2B Norm Gigon to the Kansas City A's in exchange for P Lew Krausse, P Bill Edgerton, and P Roberto Rodriguez.
Edge KC here as Meztger could end up being a solid SS in a couple of years. Everything else here is filler. It becomes much more even if the 24 year old Krausse can repeat his 14-9 2.99 from a year ago.

The other deal included the A's again, this time they sent 3B Weldon Bowlin, C Phil Roof, and 2B Dick Green to the Baltimore Orioles for P Bill Dillman, C Jeff Newman, and P Tom Fisher.
Edge Baltimore here as Dick Green can backup a couple of infield positions, but is stuck behind Davey Johnson.

Up next for Boston is 6 games at home against the Kansas City Athletics. The draft is coming up in a couple of days and I'll have a review of it afterwards.

    1967 Amateur Draft:

    1) CHI NL- 3B Mike Schmidt
    2) NY NL- C Ted Simmons
    3) NY AL- 2B Bobby Grich
    4) WAS- P Jerry Reuss
    5) BOS- LF Don Baylor: This kid can hit, plain and simple. He hit .297 36-133 HR's in 478 AB's in H.S. Also has a bit of speed swiping 19 bases in 23 chances.
    6) HOU- 1B John Mayberry
    7) KC- 1B Andre Thornton
    8) CIN- 2B Phil Garner
    9) CAL- RF Richie Zisk
    10) CLE- P Jim Kern
    11) CHI AL- RF George Hendrick
    12) STL- P Steve Rogers
    13) ATL- OF Dusty Baker
    14) PHI- OF Jerry Martin
    15) DET- C John Wockenfuss
    16) MIN- P Dave Goltz
    17) PIT- OF Dave Augustine
    18) SF- OF Ben Ogilvie
    19) LA- P Rick Reuschel
    20) BAL- P Jesse Jefferson

    Other Sox picks:
    2nd round (25th overall) SP Vida Blue: 29-7 in H.S. with a 2.29 ERA in 45 starts with a K/BB ratio of 283/70.
    3rd round (45th overall) P Roger Moret: Power pitcher with 156 K's in 170 IP's. Was 8-6 in his H.S career, mostly a reliever.
4th round (65th overall) 1B John Milner: Power hitting firstbasemen who may not hit for a high enough average to make it fulltime. Hit 26 HR's in 467 AB's.
5th round (85th overall) CF Garry Maddox: Could be a real sleeper. Hit .352 20-104 in 480 Ab's in H.S. Also stole 15 bases in 20 attempts.
6th round (105th overall) RP Jim Willoughby: 3-1 1.39 ERA as a senior with 19 K's in 32 innings to go along with 5 saves.

There was also a draft day trade made between the Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs. Boston sent it's 3rd round pick Roger Moret and minor league outfielder Bob Gallagher to Chicago in exchange for Chicago's 2nd round pick, 1B Bill Buckner. Buckner hit .404 19-133 in 482 AB's with 30 doubles and a 35/17 BB/K ratio. When it's all said and done, this will go down as one of our best deals I think.

June 10-Roger Repoz hit a HR and drove in 3, and Chuck Dobson pitched 8 shutout innings, striking out 7 as the A's beat Boston 5-2. (41-24)

June 11-3 Red Sox pitchers combined to allow 8 hits and just 1 run as Boston salvaged the last game of the 3 game series, winning 3-1. (42-24)
    W-Lee Stange (6-3) L-Bill Stafford (0-4) S-Don McMahon (21)

    Around the MLB:
The Yankees and Senators came together on two separate deals this past week, and one of them was a biggie. The New York Yankees send OF Tom Tresh, SS Ruben Amaro, P Joe Verbanic, P Dale Roberts, and P Stan Thomas to Washington in exchange for monster power hitting OF Frank Howard.
Edge to the Yankees here as Howard gives them a big bat in front of Mantle. They give up alot in Tresh, and possibly Thomas who was the Yankees 3rd round pick this year.

The second trade between the two teams saw Washington sending 1B John Orsino, 2B Bob Saverine, and SS Ruben Amaro goes back to the Yankees in exchange for 3B John Kennedy and RF Bill Robinson.
Edge Washington here as Robinson could be an impact power hitter.

Next on the schedule for the Red Sox is 3 in Detroit against the 2nd place Tigers followed by 3 at home against the Washington Senators.

There was also a deal struck between the Washington Senators and the Detroit Tigers. Detroit sends prospect P Joe Sparma, and P Joe Warden to Washington in exchange for veteran righty Camilo Pascual, 3B Ken McMullen, and C Doug Camilli.

The edge here goes to Detroit. Sparma could be a good player in a year or two, but as of right this minute, Detroit got the 2 best players in the trade in Pascual and McMullen.

Next for Boston is 3 in Washington to face the Senators again followed by 3 in Detroit against the now first place Tigers.

    Re: Impossible Dream???

June 21,22,23 at Washington Senators (21-48)

June 21-Reggie Smith and Rico Petrocelli each drove in runs in the top of the 9th inning, helping Boston come from behind and beat Washington 3-1. (45-28)
    W-John Wyatt (3-2) L-Dick Bosman (2-9) S-Don McMahon (22)

June 22-Lee Stange pitched his 2nd straight complete game, allowing just 5 hits and 1 run, and helped his own cause with an RBI single as the Sox beat the Senators again, today 2-1. (46-28)
    W-Lee Stange (8-3) L-Joe Sparma (0-1)

June 23-Reggie Smith, batting 2nd for the first time this year, hit a 3 run HR, leading Boston to a 4-1 win and a sweep over the Senators. (47-28)
    W-Dennis Bennett (6-4) L-Jim Hannah (3-10) S-Don McMahon (23)

June 24,25,26 at Detroit Tigers (50-25)

June 24-Rico Petrocelli hit a grand slam, and Bob Tillman added a 2 run shot as Boston beat the Tigers 7-2. (48-28)
    W-Bucky Brandon (6-4) L-Denny McClain (10-3)

June 25-George Scott, Carl Yastrzemski and Rico Petrocelli went back to back to back in a 4 run 1st inning and Boston held on for a 5-4 win. (49-28)
    W-Gary Waslewski (1-0) L-Bill Monbouquette (2-2) S-Don McMahon (24)

June 26-Willie Horton hit a solo HR and Al Kaline added 2 RBI as Detroit avoided the sweep, winning the finale 5-2. (49-29)
    W-Mickey Lolich (6-7) L-Jim Lonborg (8-3)

    Around the MLB:

A flurry of trade activity this past week or ten days, and first we'll discuss a move the Sox made, once more for the future.
Boston sends P Dave Morehead, P Ralph Garcia, and 2B Buddy Hunter to the Kansas City A's for 20 year old outfielder Joe Rudi. Rudi was hitting .319 11-54 in AA, and adds depth should Tony C, not come all the way back from his injury.

Some other moves from around the majors:
New York (AL) sends P Tom Hamilton
KC sends P Don Larsen 3B Ed Charles P Tom Brown
Edge New York as Charles becomes their starting thirdbaseman.

Minnesota sends C Russ Nixon LF Bill McNulty 1B Rich Reese
New York NL sends P Jim McAndrew 2B Chuck Hiller
Edge push as Reese could be a nice bat off the bench for the Mets and McAndrew could turn into a serviceable 3rd or 4th starter.

Los Angeles sends P Joe Moeller SS Tommy Dean P Dick Egan
New York NL sends SS Bud Harrelson
Edge LA here as Dean will end up a better SS than Harrelson, not to mention they got two other average players.

    Minnesota sends P Bob Gebhard
Kansas City sends CF Roger Repoz
Edge Minnesota as Repoz gives them another bat with his 10 HR's on the year so far.

    Houston sends P Arnold Early
New York NL sends P Jerry Hinsley P Ron Taylor C Jerry Grote
Whole lotta nothing here as all 4 players are rated peak under 70.

Finishing up June and heading in to July and the All-Star Break is our first look at the New York Yankees for 3 in the Bronx followed by 3 more against the Washington Senators, then it's the All-star break!

    Re: Impossible Dream???

June 30, July 1,2 at New York Yankees (43-33)

June 30-Mickey Mantle hit a 2 run HR, his 15th HR of the year as the Yankees beat the Sox 3-1. (49-30)
    W-Jim Bouton (3-0) L-Lee Stange (8-4) S-Hal Reniff (6)

July 1-Bob Tillman hit a solo HR and 3 Sox pitchers combined on a 7 hit shutout, as Boston beat the Yankees 2-0. (50-30)
    W-Dennis Bennett (7-4) L-Mel Stottlemyre (9-6) S-Don McMahon (25)

July 2-Dick Howser hit an inside the park HR, and Fritz Peterson scattered 9 hits as New York beat Boston 4-3. (50-31)
    W-Fritz Peterson (9-4) L-Jose Santiago (3-3) S-Hal Reniff (7)

July 3,4,5 at Washington Senators (25-56)

July 3-Jim King hit a 3 run HR as the Senators beat up on Jim Lonborg and the Sox, winning 5-3. (50-32)
    W-Buster Narum (3-0) L-Jim Lonborg (8-4) S-Darrold Knowles (8)

July 4-Rookie Bill Robinson hit a solo HR, and Pete Richert struck out 9 in 7 innings as Washington beat Boston 3-2. (50-33)
    W-Pete Richert (4-7) L-Tug McGraw (3-2) S-Darrold Knowles (9)

July 5-Tom Tresh hit a solo homerun, and Dick Bosman pitched 10 innings of 1 run ball, striking out 11 Red Sox as the Senators swept Boston, winning 2-1. (50-34)
    W-Darrold Knowles (1-4) L-John Wyatt (3-3)

    Around the MLB:
The Red Sox made one more deal before the trade deadline to try and improve the team this season. With our catchers hitting a combined .205 6-38 with 26/63 BB/K ratio, Boston sent C Mike Ryan and OF Mike Derrick to the San Fransisco Giants in exchange for C Dick Deitz. Deitz doesn't have much power (70), but he has an immaculate eye (91) and good arm (86) and should be able to make the pitchers work at the bottom of the order.

Up next is a quick All-Star Report!

Carl Yastrzemski was the only Red Sox to compete and he didn't get out of the 1st round. Complete results below:

Edge Cubbies here as Davis is still a very above average hitter.

Chicago AL sends P Jack Lamabe

Kansas City sends OF Mike Hershberger
Edge KC only because Hershberger is injured and Lamabe has a 2.87 ERA in 33 games this year.

    Around the MLB:

A flurry of trade activity as we approach the trade deadline this past week. The Red Sox planned on standing pat, but Cleveland came calling and made us an offer we could not refuse. Boston sent IF Dalton Jones, P Dan Osinski, and 3B Dan O'Brien to Cleveland for P Dick Radatz, 2B Pedro Gonzalez, and OF Rocky Colavito.
The opportunity to pick up a bat like Colavito was too much to pass up. Rocky was hitting .239 22-62 at the time of the trade and will move into the 6th spot in the lineup immediately. Jones was difficult to give up, but we don't think he'll be anything other than average. Bringing The Monster back to Boston was a nice addition as a strikeout pitcher. Radatz was 3-2 with a 4.02 ERA this year for the Tribe.

    Other trade news:
    Washington sends SS Ed Brinkman
Houston sends 3B Bob Aspromante CF Bob Landis C Ron Brand
Edge Washington here as they pick up two starters and give up just 1.

Chicago AL sends LF Ken Berry
    Washington sends RF Bill Robinson
Edge Chicago here as Washington gave up on Robinson after just two months with the team.

Houston sends SS Sonny Jackson P Bo Belinski
    Washington sends OF Tom Tresh
Push here as Tresh is the best talent RIGHT NOW, but Jackson will end up being the best player in this deal.

Chicago NL sends P Cal Koonce CF Jimmy Stewart C Dick Bertell
Kansas City sends LF Jim Gosger P Bob Duliba 2B Norm Gigon
Slight edge to Chicago as Stewart could be a decent 4th outfielder, but that's about it.

Cincinnati sends LF Deron Johnson C Jimmie Coker
    Cleveland sends John O'Donoghue
Edge Cleveland here as Johnson is just two years removed from 32 homers and 1 year removed from 24.

Los Angeles sends SS Gene Michael
Kansas City sends P Jim Ollom
    Edge, who cares?

New York AL sends P Hal Reniff
Washington sends P Joe Verbanic 2B Bernie Allen
Edge Washington as they pick up an excellent bullpen arm.

Minnesota sends 3B Rich Rollins P Ron Kline 2B Frank Kostro
Kansas City sends CF Jimmy Stewart
Well, KC didn't think too much of Stewart it seems.....

    MLB Milestones:

Eddie Mathews of the Houston Astros scored his 1500th run
Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees knocked in his 1500th Run

Ending the month for Boston is 3 in Minnesota against the Twins followed by 3 at home vs. the Baltimore Orioles. In between is the trade deadline, which will be next!

    Re: Impossible Dream???

    1967 Trade Deadline:

Wow, lots of action in the two days leading to the trade deadline. No big names moved, but below are all the trades that were made:

Cleveland sends P Ed Connolly P Barry Raziano 1B Ron Cash SS Jack Heideman
    Detroit sends P Hal Reniff
That's alot to give up for a league average pitcher.

Chicago NL sends 1B Lee Thomas
New York NL sends P Chuck Estrada
Edge Mets as Thomas is a good stick if not much else.

Cleveland sends C Duke Sims P Bob Allen
Philadelphia sends P Jesus Hernaiz OF Tito Francona P Jeff James
Edge Philly as they get a new starting catcher.

San Fransisco sends OF Frank Johnson
Kansas City sends P Diego Segui
Below average pitcher for a career minor league outfielder, who cares?

Houston sends P Howie Reed LF Jay Schuelter P Jerry Hinsley
Kansas City sends C Don Pavletich P Ron Kline 2B George Lauzerique
Edge Houston as Pavletich is the new catcher and Kline moves into a setup role.

    Baltimore sends 2B Dick Green
Washington sends C Ron Brand OF Jim Landis
Edge Baltimore as they get a couple of good bench sticks for the stretch run.

    Detroit sends 3B Don Wert
New York NL sends P Arnold Early
Edge New York as Wert becomes the starting 3B, not to mention Early didn't want to go to Detroit and promptly retired!!!

New York AL sends 2B Bernie Allen C Elston Howard
Cleveland sends C Jay Kleven LF Willie Smith P Jeff James P Hal Kurtz
Edge Cleveland as Allen is a serviceable player and Howard is the new starting catcher.

    Detroit sends P Orlando Pena
New York NL P sends 3B Don Wert
You read it right, basically Detroit gave the Mets Pena for nothing in the end....

    Philadelphia sends C Clay Dalrymple
New York NL sends P Orlando Pena
In the end, New York got a starting catcher for a retired player, not bad negotiating skills.

Chicago NL sends P Chuck Estrada P Bob Duliba
Cleveland sends P Steve Mingori P Jim Rittwage 1B Fred Whitfield
Edge Chicago here as Whitfield is the only real talent in the group.

Kansas City sends P Jack Acker
New York AL sendsP Fred Talbot
A trade of two minor league pitchers that won't mount to anything.

Detroit sends CF Mickey Stanley 3B Don Wert
    Cleveland sends P Hal Reniff
Man, Detroit got absolutely played this year. Trading Stanley, Wert and Orlando Pena for Hal Reniff, a pitcher they had traded for 2 days earlier.....not good.
