Reggie Smith and Dock Ellis are both having insane seasons! MVP and Cy Young front-runners?

    Re: Impossible Dream???

Ya, Smith has been extremely consistent thusfar, I would say he's in the MVP race. The other candidates to date would be:
    Tommy Agee (CHW) .351 21-66 17 steals
    George Foster (CLE) .294 30-84
    Tony Oliva (MIN) .355 14-82

Dock Ellis, while amazing so far, has also gotten lucky a couple of times, like the 1.1 9 hits 8 ER debacle a couple weeks back with the Sox coming back to win. Other Cy Young candidates:
    Jim Palmer (BAL) 15-5 3.43
    Gary Peters (CHW) 12-5 2.25

July 24-Toby Harrah and Ted Simmons each drove in a pair of runs, and Dock Ellis allowed 1 run over 7 innings as the Sox beat the Royals 7-1. (72-25)
    W-Dock Ellis (18-0) L-Vida Blue (3-4)

July 25-Joe Lahoud went 2-4 with 4 RBI, and Steve Carlton toughed out 7 innings, allowing 4 runs as Boston beat KC 6-4. (73-25)
    W-Steve Carlton (11-6) L-Tim Abbott (5-8) S-Sparky Lyle (27)

July 26-Denny McClain pitched a complete game, 3 hit shutout, walking just 1 while striking out 8 and Tony Conigliaro hit a 2 run HR to help Boston sweep KC, winning 4-0. (74-25)
    W-Denny McClain (13-6) L-George Brunet (6-10)

July 30,31, August 1 at Cleveland Indians (44-58)

July 30-Tony Conigilaro hit a grand slam and Oscar Brown drove in 2 runs as Boston beat Cleveland 6-4. (75-25)
    W-Dock Ellis (19-0) L-Jerry Koosman (5-13) S-Sparky Lyle (28)

July 31-Ron Santo, who hadn't homered in over a month, hit a pair of 2 run HR's, and Steve Carlton struck out 9 in 7 innings as Boston beat up on the Indians 8-1. (76-25)
    W-Steve Carlton (12-6) L-Steve Renko (7-11)

August 1-Denny McClain continued his up and down season, allowing 6 runs and 10 hits in 6 innings, as Frank Baker homered and drove in 4 as Cleveland avoided the sweep, beating the Sox 6-2. (76-26)
    W-George Culver (3-1) L-Denny McClain (13-7)

    MLB Trade Deadline News:

Los Angeles sends P Rawly Eastwick
San Diego sends SS Chico Salmon
Good move by the Dodgers, as their starter Leo Cardenas had put up a .583 OPS this year.

St. Louis sends 2B Chip Coulter LF Dan Thomas
    Cincinnati sends C Johnny Edwards

If nothing else, this deal finally allows the Reds to start a youngster named Johnny Bench, who has tremendous potential.

    Washington sends LF Jake Brown
    Milwaukee sends 1B Wes Parker
At least they got a decent prospect this time. Only Adolpho Phillips remains from their 1969 Opening Day Lineup now.

San Fransisco sends P John Montefusco
Kansas City sends 2B Dave Cash
Montefusco could be a decent #3, but I think you have to get more for Cash, who was hitting .278 with 16 steals so far.

Chicago (AL) sends P Ossie Osborn, P Joe Henderson, P Ken Frailing
    Milwaukee sends OF Tommy Harper
I thought maybe Harper would get playing time with all the trades, I just didn't expect it to be in Chicago.

Atlanta sends P Pete Buesing SS Larvell Blanks 2B Rod Gilbreath
    Pittsburgh sends P Fritz Peterson
Not a bad haul for a pitcher who was 2-15 6.47 at the time of the deal.

    Atlanta sends OF John Fuller
    Philadelphia sends 1B Norm Cash
Don't really understand this. Why sign him to a 4 year deal, then trade him halfway through season 1. Excellent move by the Braves.

Up next are the League Standings!

    W-Steve Carlton (17-7) L-Terry Ley (1-2) S-Sparky Lyle (39)

    Around the MLB:

Sparky Lyle currently sits at 189 career saves, which puts him 2nd on the all time list, just 1 behind Los Angeles Dodgers closer Ron Perranoski. I would suspect Lyle will be the leader by the time the season ends.

Johnny Roseboro of the New York Yankees
retired after 14 big league seasons. Roseboro hit .246 with 112 HR's for his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Yankees. He was a 3 time all-star and played a crucial part in the Dodgers World Series teams of the 60's.

Up next for the Sox is a 3 game set in California against the Angels followed by a cross country trip to face the struggling Washington Senators in the nations capital!
