    Re: Impossible Dream???

    1970 Off-Season Contract News:

We only had one decision to make this offseason and it regarded Joe Foy. He was asking for $250,000 in arbitration, and if the past couple years were any indication, he was going to get it. Due to this, we decided to finally bite the bullet and sign Foy to a long term deal that totalled 3 years worth $202,000 per year. Foy is instrumental to our success being able to play every infield position. He also provides depth should we not re-sign Ron Santo after the '71 season.

    Off-Season Trade News:

This is where we made the biggest splash. It was clear after the World Series that we just did not have an ace, and I wasn't comfortable with any of my starters to close the opposition down when it mattered. Bill Lee is solid, but he's a number 2 at best, so our goal was to fix this. We made two blockbuster deals this offseason to shore up the starting rotation. First we sent C Jim Sundberg, P Craig Swan, and P Jerry Stephenson to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for P Dock Ellis. The Pirates were not going to be able to re-sign Ellis after this year so we pounced. Ellis was only 14-18 last year, but threw over 270 innings and lead the majors in starts with 44. He is only 25 and should spearhead the rotation for years to come. Stephenson was tough to give up as he was finally coming into his own, going 16-5 last year, but was very erratic and Steve Carlton is farther along in his development.

The 2nd move we made involved a team from our own division. We tested the waters to see what the need was for Rollie Fingers, and while doing this, we found out that the Tigers were shopping Denny McClain. After long discussions, the deal was struck. McClain was sent to Boston, along with $200,000 in exchange for P Joe Moeller and P Ken Forsch. McClain was 14-11 4.51 last year, but again he threw over 255 innings, while striking out 196 and walking only 90. He slides into the 3 slot behind Bill Lee. Forsch was tough to give up after acquiring him last year in the Lonborg deal, but in the end, you have to give talent to get it. He is only 27 and is signed through 1973.

    Off-Season Free Agent News:

The biggest splash this offseason was made by the Montreal Expos as they sign OF Hank Aaron away from the Atlanta Braves. He gives the Expos an instant threat in the middle of their lineup, and to go along with their young pitching, Montreal could be on the brink. The deal calls for Aaron to be paid $380,000 per year for the next 3 years. Below are the rest of the major signings during the offseason:

    Jim O'Toole (CHI) 3 years/$244,000 per
Tom Seaver (NYM) 2 years/$253,000 per
Jack Fisher (NYM) 4 years/$226,600 per
Joe Pepitone (NYY) 4 years/$228,600 per
Norm Cash (PHI) 3 years/$350,000 per
Al Kaline (NYY) 3 years/$350,000 per
Donn Clendenon (DET) 3 years/$336,000 per
Mark Belanger (MON) 4 years/$211,000 per
Dick Deitz (HOU) 3 years/$230,000 per
Tommy Davis (KC) 4 years/$170,000 per
Fred Beene (CHI AL) 2 years/$322,000 per
Don Nottebart (PHI) 3 years/$290,000 per
Mike Cuellar (PHI) 3 years/$280,000 per
Bob Gibson (PHI) 3 years/$264,000 per

Jim Perry (PIT) 2 years/$245,000 per
Fritz Peterson (PIT) 2 years/$206,000 per

During Spring Training, we came to terms with 3 of our vital pieces. First we signed Tony Conigliaro to a 5 year extention worth $305,000 per year. Tony C. is the heart and soul of this team, and we needed to keep him on board. Second, we signed newly acquired Dock Ellis to a 4 year deal worth $295,000 per year, which will lock him up until he is 29. Last we tied up SS Rico Petrocelli to a 6 year contract worth $320,000 per year, which includes a no trade clause. We have no SS prospects in the system, so it was key to sign Rico and keep him happy.

Up next will be team by team previews of the 1971 season!!

Pitching-Mickey Lolich (13-14 3.66) is the ace of this staff and he gets help from newcomer Joe Moeller (13-3 3.61) and Pat Dobson (12-11 4.26). Fred Gladding (6-10 4.85 24/30 in save chances) is solid as closer.

Pitching-Mel Stottlemyre (16-9 3.76) is the unquestioned ace of this team. Jim Bouton (2-8 4.22) regressed from his 20-7 2.24 line in 1969. Al Downing (3-4 3.83) in limited action last year due to injury.

    Washington Senators (projected 71-91)
Offense-Below average lineup lead by Bobby Tolan (.279 13-70 27 steals) and Roger Repoz (.231 16-55). Tony Horton (.295 24-95) supplies the most pop at firstbase.

Pitching-Excellent young pitching staff consisting of Jerry Reuss (14-19 5.08), Carl Morton (10-19 4.78), Joe Coleman (8-15 5.52) and rookie J.R. Richard (15-4 2.66 in AA).

    Cleveland Indians (projected 62-100)
Offense-Discussion starts and ends with George Foster (.336 44-125). He doesn't get much help, but the help he does get comes from Frank Baker (.227 15-66) and Jack Hiatt (.327 10-51).

Pitching-3 solid starters that haven't put it all together yet in Steve Hargan (9-17 4.59), Jerry Koosman (8-17 5.90), and Tom Kelley (8-10 4.21). Closer Phil Hennigan (2-4 4.25 14/15 in save chances) leads a solid bullpen.

Pitching-Solid 1-3 in Catfish Hunter (21-9 3.19), Andy Messersmith (15-11 3.88), and Clyde Wright (18-10 3.56) go along with the up and coming Marcelino Lopez (7-3 2.65), and a bullpen that had a group ERA of under 3.00 last year.

Chicago White Sox (projected record 93-69)
Offense-Tommie Agee (.285 39-121), Bill Melton (.290 29-114), and Jim Northrup (.313 34-123) provide a killer 3-4-5 in the heart of the lineup. Pete Ward (.302 27-74 42 doubles) leads off.

Pitching-Gary Peters (24-4 2.89) had a career year. Complimenting him is Tommy John (14-13 3.72), knuckleballer Wilbur Wood (13-9 3.36) and Jim O'Toole (14-14 4.17). Dennis Higgins (3-7 4.82 27/32 in save chances) finishes up games.
