    W-Sparky Lyle (3-0) L-Dave Giusti (1-1)

May 30-Ron Santo homered twice and drove in 5 in his first game back in the 5 hole, and Tony C. added a solo HR as Boston completed the sweep, beating Minnesota 7-5. (36-15)

    W-Clay Carroll (5-2) L-Rollie Fingers (1-2)

June 1-Harmon Killebrew and Joe Foy each had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Bill Lee pitched 8 innings allowing just 2 runs as Boston beat Chicago 7-2. (37-16)
    W-Bill Lee (6-1) L-Wilbur Wood (5-3)

    Around the MLB:

Minor trade news out of Boston as the Red Sox reacquire lefthanded pitcher Ken Brett from the San Diego Padres in exchange for P Gary Timberlake. We never wanted to lose Brett in the expansion draft, so getting him for a pitcher we signed off waivers works for us.

Bad news out of Boston as P Jim Lonborg has demanded that we either meet his requests for a contract extension of 3 years $440,000 per year, or we trade him. With Charlie Hough, Roger Moret and Ron Guidry waiting in the wings, I am not sure we will be willing to cave to this, so with the trade deadline coming up in the next month, we'll have to pay attention to this to see what happens!

Up next is the 1970 Amateur Draft!

    Re: Impossible Dream???

    1970 Amateur Draft

    1) Kansas City- OF Fred Lynn
    2) Montreal- P Dan Worthen
    3) Cleveland- P John Denny
    4) San Diego- SS Roy Smalley
    5) Washington- P Dennis Lamp
    6) Chicago (NL)- C Darrell Porter
    7) Pittsburgh- P Rick Langford
    8) Detroit- P Mike Krukow
    9) Cincinnati- P Pat Zachry
    10) Atlanta- P Al Autry
    11) California- P John Caneira
    12) Minnesota- P Eddie Bane
    13) Philadephia- P Dave Downs
    14) New York (NL)- P Pete Vucovich
    15) New York (AL)- P Terry Forster
    16) Los Angeles- P Joaquin Andujar
    17) Milwaukee (Seattle)- P Rick Waits
    18) Oakland- P Gary Bears
    19) Houston- P Mike Stanton
    20) St. Louis- 2B Rich Dauer
    21) Baltimore- P Jeff Schneider
    22) Boston- OF Dave Collins: He's got the legs, 27/32 in steal chances, he's got the glove, 2 errors in 172 career games, he can hit for average .374 career average in H.S., but doesn't hit for much power, 5 homeruns.
    22) Chicago (AL)- SS Bill Almon
    23) San Fransisco- 2B Bump Wills

    Other Sox Picks:
2nd Round (46th overall) 3B Ray Knight- 14 HR 121 RBI in 130 career games. Hit .370/.437/.571 as a senior. Projects to possible starting 3B in 4 or 5 years.
3rd Round (70th overall) OF Greg Gross- Drafted him for his already stellar batting eye (91), had a rediculous 114/27 BB/K ratio in H.S. Hit .461/.583/.557 as a senior, and .486/.594/.559 as a junior, so the kid can hit, but can he hit enough to overcome his lack of any other real talent, that's the question.
4th Round (94th overall) P Dave Wehrmeister- 9-7 3.42 career mark. Drafted him basically because I didn't want to not draft a pitcher this year. May become a back of the bullpen strikeout pitcher after striking out 120 in 134 innings in H.S.
5th Round (118th overall) OF Jerry Hairston- .315/.483/..415 as a senior with a 41/13 BB/K ratio. Like Gross, can hit for average and will walk, but can he do other things well enough to stick around. I doubt it.
6th Round (142nd overall) 1B Pete LaCock- .365/.479/.600 6-32 as a senior in 35 games. His senior year vaulted him to a potential draftee, but don't expect much.

Up next is 3 in California against the Angels followed by 3 on the East Coast, in Fenway against the Yankees.

    Around the MLB:

After much speculation, the Red Sox have finally found a taker for P Jim Lonborg, sending the disgruntled righty to the Houston Astros in exchange for 2 blue chip minor leaguers, RP Bob Forsch and 1B John Mayberry.
Lonborg was 7-3 this year for Boston, and is 73-58 with a 3.36 ERA for his career. Forsch was 7-1 1.86 in AA ball for Houston and will move to AAA. Mayberry is currently on the DL with a bad elbow, but hit .282/.393/.503 10-36 last year in A ball and once he comes off the DL will move to either AA or AAA.

Up next for Boston is 3 games in California against the Angels followed by 3 games at home against the New York Yankees.

    Re: Impossible Dream???

June 29,30 July 1 at Washington Senators (32-49)

June 29-Tony C. went 3-5 with a HR and 2 RBI, and Ted Simmons added a solo shot as Boston beat Washington 5-3. (55-24)
    W-Bill Lee (10-1) L-Bill Laxton (0-1) S-Sparky Lyle (16)

June 30-Ron Santo homered twice and drove in 6, and Ted Simmons went 3-5 with a HR and 3 RBI as the Red Sox beat up on the Senators 13-1. (56-24)
    W-Steve Carlton (11-6) L-Joe Coleman (2-10)

July 1-Joe Foy hit a 2 run pinch hit single, and Ted Simmons added a pair of RBI as Boston swept the first three games of the series, winning 5-3. (57-24)
    W-Jerry Stephenson (7-3) L-Jerry Reuss (7-14) S-Sparky Lyle (17)

July 3,4,5 at Washington Senators (32-52)

July 3-Ron Santo, Harmon Killebrew, and Allan Lewis each drove in 3 runs and Ted Simmons added a 2 run shot as Boston put the hurt on the Senators 14-2. (58-24)
    W-Charlie Hough (1-2) L-Dave McNally (1-5)

July 4-Don Baylor hit a 2 run HR, and Don Money added 2 RBI as Boston overcame a 4-1 deficit to win 6-4. (59-24)
    W-Rollie Fingers (2-3) L-Aurelio Monteagudo (6-5) S-Sparky Lyle (18)

July 5-Ken Berry went 2-5 with 4 RBI, and Bob Aspromonte homered and drove in 3 as the Senators avoided the sweep, beating Boston 10-4. (59-25)
    W-Bill Laxton (1-1) L-Steve Carlton (11-7)

    Around the MLB:

Chicago NL sends P Darcy Fast
New York NL sends P Don Shaw

The first of what I suspect will be many moves to try to catch the St. Louis Cardinals. Good move by the Cubbies.

Bill Mazeroski of the Pittsburgh Pirates collected his 2000th hit
Norm Cash of the Detroit Tigers knocked in his 1000th run

The Red Sox have come to terms with a couple of their pitchers who were eligible for arbitration this offseason. First we resigned P Jim York to a 4 year deal worth $143,000 per year. York has blossomed so far this year, putting up a 3.80 ERA this year in 42 innings, but his DICE is just 2.96 which means he is getting very unlucky. Boston also resigned lefthander Steve Carlton to a 4 year deal totalling $836,000. Carlton has made some strides this year, going 11-7 3.40, but still has plenty of room to improve, and this deal should take us right up to his prime years.

Up next are the All-Star break festivities!!!
