    Re: Impossible Dream???

    Offseason Contract News:

There were quite a few decisions to make with regards to contracts. First we let Leon Wagner go, after hitting .213 3-8 in 80 AB's for the Sox. We also let Eddie Mathews go after he went 0-7 in limited action with Boston. The difficult one was Lee Stange, who will be out until midseason. We decided to cut ties with him and he signed a 3 year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals worth $239,000/year.

The players we decided to resign were Allan Lewis (arbitration 1 year $81,000) who hit .262 6-34 15 steals, Joe Foy (arbitration 1 year $185,000) .259 10-41, Fred Rico (3 years $120,000 per year) .218 1-5 with Boston, Steve Carlton (arbitration 1 year $135,000) 6-10 3.77.

And since I forgot end of the season League Leaders, those are next, prior to Free Agency!

    Re: Impossible Dream???

1969 Free Agent Signings/Offseason Trade News:

The Sox made 3 signings this offseason. First they brought in veteran 3B/LF Harmon Killebrew from the Minnesota Twins to a 2 year deal worth $510,000. Killebrew hit .247/.358/.478 18-58 last year in Minnesota and will start in left against lefties and will be the primary pinch hitter. They also signed National League Save leader Lindy McDaniel to a 2 year deal worth $280,000 per year. McDaniel went 8-6 3.02 and was 28/32 for the World Champion Giants, and will move into a short relief role. Lastly, the Sox signed swingman Larry Jaster away from the Seattle Pilots to a 3 year deal worth $133,333 per year. Jaster went 3-4 3.66 for the expansion Pilots last year before going down for the year with a broken wrist. He becomes the 5th starter for the Sox.

Boston also struck a few deals to help down the road. The most minor deal involved Boston sending Larry Maxie to the Seattle Pilots for minor league P Jeffry Draper. Maxie went 9-3 3.21 last year, but tailed off badly towards the end of the season and the playoffs.

The next deal saw Boston send 2B Mike Andrews to the Atlanta Braves for OF Oscar Brown.. Andrews lost his starting job last year to Joe Foy and was low on the depth chart this year. Brown hit .300 5-81 in AA last year for the Braves and will start the season in AAA.
