When you hear sportscaster's, player's, owner's, etc... talk about Maddox though, they usually talk about how much he brings to the clubhouse, and things like that. He's not being paid simply for his pitching ability, but also for his coaching, stability, management abilities, etc...

We are entering Baseballs Golden age...similar to the 80's when they had 10 different champions in 10 years.

We are at 7 in 7 years (doesnt matter who wins the ws this year...Detroit or the Cards..)that is just amazing!

FRS, Schmidt will be asking for a lot more than $9M from what I've heard. It'll be 8 figures easily for him. The question I have about Schmidt, and Zito too for that matter, is the wear and tear on them. They've been ridden hard and put away wet an awful lot. The Japanese dude Matsuzaka is just q question mark, period.

As for Maddux, if Colletti could have signed him to an extension at the time he traded for him, then he MIGHT (maybe) could have gotten him for one of those $3M incentive laden deals. But not now, not after the job Maddux did down the stretch. $9M does seem a little high, but that's probably what it will take.

Ohms is right though Maddux does bring more to the table in terms of leadership and potential teaching abilities. The Dodgers have a bunch of talented but young arms who can learn a lot from him.

Oh Im not discussing the "coaching" talent nor the actual talent - but the justification of signing an excellent 40+ pitcher to a milti-year contract. What is certain th FA market will dominated by the 3 guys you mentioned but there are other pitchers out there wh o would cost less & maybe better long term investments (Lilly for example or Moose Mussina)

Perhaps, but I think those two guys are actually probably more at risk of your cliff-diving example than Maddux. I could be wrong, of course.

the Yankees are expected to non-tender and resign Mussina for a lesser contract ($10-12 million per for 2-3 from what i hear). he probably wont hit the FA market.

Cliff diving occurs earlier for some guys than for others. After all, aren't there some guys in Hawaii who go cliff diving in their teenage years?
