So is Girardi still a good manager if the Marlins do well again next year and whatever team he ends up with sucks?
Personally I DONT think he is a good manager - I also think beinfest & his crew are good - Girardi was in a no lose situation,in my eyes,if the Marlins did bad well it was because he had a poor roster if he did well he would be as stud but Beinfests ' moves got him his rotation (either thru the draft or the great off season moves),ditto for the bullpen & the lineup .
But the Cubbies are happy because if you gave them a dead manager they believe it would be an upgrade
I'm sure he'd do a passable job with the Cubs or wherever he ends up. Whatever the real story with the firing, I think he's still a pretty classy guy. So if he ends up in Chicago, good luck to them, so long as the Brewers finish at least a game ahead of them every year.
I like the Brewers roster a lot (except the outfield unit which is a disaster) but the infield is good especially Bill Hall who would be a"star" if he were in a media team -how many guys do you know hit .290 ~30 HRs & can well at SS/2B/3B?
Pitching wise the top 3 when on are as good as any 3 in the league & now you have a real bona fida Closer.
For 2007 I think they are the team that will cause Cardinals fans the most "nightmares" especially if you can get league average hits from LF & RF
This guy is not minor though...
If the Cubs want veteran manager Lou Piniella, the feeling appears to be mutual -- especially with the New York Yankees no longer an option for 2007. Piniella expressed deep interest in the Cubs job during an exclusive interview Tuesday with the Sun-Times before Game 1 of the American League Championship Series. ''Yeah, I've talked to the Cubs,'' said Piniella, who is broadcasting the ALCS for Fox. ''Chicago is a wonderful city. And the Cubs are a very storied franchise. They have great fans. I had a nice conversation with their general manager, Jim Hendry. He's a real baseball guy. We just have to wait and see what happens. ''I've always enjoyed going to Chicago as a player and as a manager. It's truly one of the great cities in our country. Being a part of turning around the Cubs would be a challenge.''
The Cubs should hire Girardi. He led a team of rookies into contention in Florida.
For other reasons, let's examine Dusty Baker's flaws. Dusty decided that players peak from 32-36 or later and that walks are a bad thing. Both are ridiculous because it is proven fact that the higher the on-base percentage, the more runs a team scores, most of the time. It's also proven fact that players peak at or around 27 and then drop off from there (slightly for a few years and then drastically). Dusty has shown the same lack of trust of common sense that Grady Little showed in Boston when he refused to pull Pedro in the ALCS, increasing the Red Sox World Series drought by another season (after all, the Yankees did toss away the 2003 Series by poor bullpen management). Other flaws Dusty has include his unwillingness to play rookies, which has cost the Cubs any chance of developing talent.
The Cubs biggest needs for next year are to teach their current hitters to work the count and draw walks, to get a new shortstop (Cedeno's got to be worth no more than replacement level), and to get their pitching fixed (it's time for the Cubs to dump Prior and Wood on somebody because they can't even pitch when they're not on the DL and some sucker's going to offer a few decent players for them). The Cubs should keep 7 of their 8 regulars and Zambrano. I don't think they need to do too much with the bullpen. It's good as it is. The Cubs basically have a playoff team already and Dusty Baker blew it.
You can't put just anybody in control of a team of rookies and contend. With Girardi, the Marlins would be a favorite to win the World Series next season, but without him they might win about 85 games and lose the wild card race. When Girardi got fired, the Marlins fans (all 6,000 of them) were pissed off. Of course, the Marlins owner is an idiot as everybody should know by now (after he single-handedly killed baseball interest in Montreal and got the Expos moved to Washington and is now killing interest in the Marlins). You cannot blame Girardi for the situation that got him fired, at all. You can only place the full blame on the owner. He'll be out of baseball within the next 3 years and the Marlins (probably in Portland or Los Vegas) will win a World Series when their talent fully matures.
Looks like Piniella has the inside track especially after pulling himself out of the running for the Giants
Quote "The Cubs have decided they want to interview Bruce Bochy for their managerial opening, and it doesn't appear the Padres will stand in their way. Denied by the Padres in his attempt to interview Bochy in 2001, Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry made it known yesterday he expects to meet with Bochy soon, according to major league sources. A Cubs official has said Bochy is the No. 1 choice of at least one adviser to Hendry, and perhaps Hendry himself"
Well I bet the Cub s fans are REALLY happy now (so where is the Girardi fan club gone ?)
