San Diego is where I want to retire

I read some of the more successful dynasty threads, and I have decided to start anew, with a more challenging team and situation. I have always liked the Pds for some reason, so I decided to give it a go.

The first thing I needed to do was cut some salary, so I made a few moves early on. The first trade was with the Boston Red Sox. I sent CF Dave Roberts 79/79, RP Rod Beck 79/79, SP Andy Ashby 68/70, and SP Pedro Astacio 79/79 to the Sox in exchange for SP David Pauley 71/89, and CF Jacoby Ellsbury 72/86. I am not sure why the Sox took on 3 40 something pitchers for two high level prospects, but I am not Theo Epstein, so i'm not worrying about it. Ellsbury and Pauley will both start in AAA.

The 2nd trade I made involved the New York Yankees. I sent them SP Chan Ho Park 80/80 and his 15 million dollar contract, along with RP Scott Cassidy 76/76, SP Charles Nagy 68/68 (yes he's still alive apparantely), RP Brian Falkenbourg 72/72 and C David Ross 76/76 for SP Jesse Hoover 72/86, and 3B Eric Duncan 73/92. Again, this is a move for the future, but I got rid of possibly the worst contract in the MLB and got my 3B of the future and another solid SP. Both will start in AAA.

My third and final move of the new season was to trade OF Ryan Klesko 80/80 and his $10,000,000 contract along with SS Jesse Garcia 68/68, CF Mike Cameron 76/79 and his $6,000,000 contract, 3B Corey Smith 74/82, and RP Scott Linebrink 76/76 to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in exchange for OF Delmon Young 76/92. This was a move for the now, I cut almost 20 million in salary, and Young will start in RF batting 3rd for me.

Those moves left me with a 2006 opening day roster of:
    CF Freddy Guzman
    2B Josh Barfield
    LF Delmon Young
    RF Brian Giles
    C Mike Piazza
    3B Vinny Castilla
    1B Adrian Gonzales
    SS Khalil Greene
    Bench
    C Doug Mirabelli
    OF Termell Sledge
    IF Geoff Blum
    IF Mark Bellhorn
    C Ben Petrick
    1B Todd Sears

    Pitching
    Jake Peavy
    J.J Trujillo
    Ryan Meaux
    Nataneal Mateo
    Kenny Baugh
    Trevor Hoffman (closer)
    Alan Embree (setup)
    Woody Williams
    Shawn Estes
    Clay Hensley
    Doug Brocail
Chris Young is out for the first 15 days with an unspecified injury. Once he is healthy, he will move into the number 2 slot in my rotation. That's all for now, and after each month, I will give a recap, but I will list total team stats at the end of May, the trade deadline and the end of the season. I hope you guys enjoy this, because I really enjoy writing them

The Padres and the Red Sox complete another deal that leave some fans in Boston scratching their heads. The Padres send OF Paul Mcnaulty 72/72, C Pete LaForest 74/74, and RP Alan Embree 79/79 to Boston in exchange for prize prospect SP Jon Lester 72/91. The only thing I can think of is the Red Sox are trying to put back together their 2004 championship team. First Dave Roberts, now Embree...I still have Bellhorn if they want him!

April 17 San Diego Padres vs Los Angeles Dodgers

This is the boxscore of said game:
    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 + R H E
    Padres (SDP) 0 0 8 2 4 1 1 0 1 17 28 1
    Dodgers (LAD) 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 7 0

That's right, 17 runs 28 hits. Jesse Barfield and Delmon Young both with 5 hits pace the attack. The Pads hammered Dodgers starter Joel Hanrahan to the tune of 4 1/3 IP 19 hits and 14 runs.....the win left the Padres with a record of 5-6.

Re: San Diego is where I want to retire

End of April with a 12-12 record 4.5 games out of the division lead. Freddy Guzman has been a godsend thusfar, hitting .340 with 21 steals through April!!! Khalil Greene is at .301 with 6 HR and 23 RBI. Pitching wise, nothing overly spectacular to talk about jake Peavy is 2-2 with a 3.27 ERA in 41.1 IP. On the injury front, Josh Barfield is out for the next 3 weeks with a finger stress fracture. Mark Bellhorn and Geoff Blum will share time at 2B until he heals.

Re: San Diego is where I want to retire

May ends with a 12-16 record, dropping the Padres 6.5 games out of the NL West lead at 24 and 28 on the year. I didn't make any trades during the month, although I did send Kenny Baugh down to AAA, considering he is 1-3 with a 10.80 ERA, he's lucky thats all I did to him. In his place, I called up Dewon Brazelton. I can't figure out for the life of me how to show the stats in code form like other people do, I have spent the last hour trying, so instead, I will do my best to type them out.

    Freddy Guzman .317 0-17 41 steals
    Josh Barfield .271 6-26
    Delmon Young .257 1- 20 6 steals
    Brian Giles .350 9-48 1.096 OPS
    Mike Piazza .282 4-24
    Vinny Castilla .241 2-13
    Adrian Gonzales .194 5-14
    Khalil Greene .257 7-32
    Termel Sledge .316 8-22 in only 78 AB's
    Mark Bellhorn .221 1-5

    Pitching

    Jake Peavy 5-4 3.11 63 K in 76 IP 3 CG
    Chris Young 4-3 4.20 54K in 60 IP
    Ryan Meaux 2-4 5.45 31K in 39 IP
    J.J Trujillo 2-5 6.31
    Natanael Mateo 1-2 5.36
Trevor Hoffman 1-1 6.75 11/14 in save chances
    Woody Williams 4-3 6.39
    Shawn Estes 3-3 6.90

Re: San Diego is where I want to retire

June ends with a 12-15 record, 36-43 overall. 8.5 games behind LA for the WC and 11 games out of the NL West Lead. So far leaders through June are Brian Giles, who is having a monster season, hitting .352 with 14 HR and 52 RBI. Freddy Guzman has been a monster on the basepaths, with 63 steals, while hitting .313. He's on pace to set a ML record for steals in a season, we will keep you updated. On the pitching front, the only real news to speak of is Jake Peavy, who is 8-6 with a 3.33 ERA.

I did make a minor move, sending Shawn Estes and his 3-3 7.16 ERA and 78 baserunners allowed in 49 innings to AAA and called up prospect David Pauley, who has started off strongly going 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in 17 innings to go along with 1 save. Now that i have figured out the code, full team stats coming up at the end of July!

It has been a year to remember for C Mike Piazza in terms of milestones reached as he hit his 400th HR in May and in June picked up his 2,000th hit. He has been a steadying force in my lineup this year, but it's unlikely he will be back next, so this could be his swansong.

The most intriguing game of the month, took place on June 23 against the LA Dodgers where in 16 innings, the Padres beat LA 4-3. Delmon Young singled home Geoff Blum for the victory.

Thanks I know very little about computers. Anyway, ASB came and went and I had two players named to the starting line up. C Mike Piazza .280 12-54 and OF Brian Giles .353 15-78. Giles lead off and went 1-4 and Piazza went 0-4 as well. Box score:

Re: San Diego is where I want to retire

July came and the Padres were definately sellers this year. First, the deadline deals:
San Diego sends OF Ben Johnson 74/74 and $1,000,000 to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in exchange for 19 year old rookie SP Matt Walker 73/86. Another move for the future. However the big deal of the deadline for the Padres involved the Milwaukee Brewers, in a deal that will leave the fan of the Brew Crew scratching their collective heads for years to come, the Padres send C Ben Petrick 75/77, 1B Walter Young 65/75, and SP Shawn Estes 79/79 to Milwaukee for 1B Prince Fielder 80/90. Fielder moves right into the lineup, replacing ineffective Adrian Gonzales, who will be relegated to the bench.

July brought a 10-16 record, which drops the Padres to a 46-59 overall record, 11 games out of the WC race. From this point on, I am going to see what the rookies have to offer, so I call up 3B Eric Duncan and move Vinny Castilla to the bench, as well as calling up SP Jon Lester, move him into the starting rotation and I plan on sending Woody Williams to AAA or DFA'ing when Chris Young comes back from injury next week.

Eighty steals? What's his speed? And can any other catcher in the National League West throw runners out?

Re: San Diego is where I want to retire

August was by far the best month for the Pads, as they went 16-11, ending up 11.5 games out. The youngsters have paid dividens thusfar, Eric Duncan is taking advantage of the job going .292 5-19 in 106 AB's, Prince Fielder has gone .292 2-17 in 28 games with the Padres. On the pitching front, Jon Lester is 4-1 albeit with a 4.55 ERA in 9 starts, and David Pauley is 4-2 4.55 in 12 games, 10 of them starts. Freddy Guzman is up to 106 steals on the year, he need 25 in September and October to break the record! Go Freddy Go!!! His Speed is "only" an 89, I'll keep you updated!

Re: San Diego is where I want to retire

And the season ends on a down note, as the Pads go 11-19, finishing up with a record of 73-89, good for last place in the NL West, 26 games out of the lead.

Freddy couldn't do it, he had a bit of a slump in September, and finished up with 117 steals, getting caught 12 times. I think this offseason will consist of me paring payroll and trying to bring in some young talent. I made a good chunk of money this year, earning almost 27 million dollars in my first year. This gives me some room to play in the FA market for a C, SS or some relief pitching. On a side note, I am pretty excited about Delmon Young and the progress he made the 2nd half of the season. Expect an All-Star birth next year.
