Help Needed: Yearly Trivia

Baseball Mogul 2006 has the code to display a different Trivia Fact for each year (on the Choose Start Year dialog). But I never got around to writing them all.

Here are 3 examples I did write:

1945: The 1945 All-Star Game was skipped because of World War II travel restrictions. Instead, 8 inter-league games were played to raise money for the Red Cross and War Relief.

1968: Carl Yastremski won the 1968 AL Batting Title with a batting average of .301 -- the lowest ever for a batting champion.

2005: Baseball returns to Washington in 2005 with the Montreal Expos moving into JFK Stadium.

1952: The All Star Game was called on account of rain. The first, and so far only, ASG not to go a complete 9 innings.

1984: Dave Kingman batted a ball through the roof of the Metrodome. From his website:

Score Another First for Oakland's 'Sky King'

MINNEAPOLIS--Dave Kingman is the first man to make contact with the ceiling of the Astrodome in Houston. The ball he hit foul off the roof, 208 feet above home plate, was autographed and sent to the hall of fame in 1972 or '73, he can't remember which.
A towering drive by Kingman in Montreal resulted in bright red foul stripes being painted across the overhanging roof of Olympic Stadium.
Now, Sky King, as Minnesota Twins manager Billy gardener has named the Oakland A's slugger, has become the first player to reach the 187-foot ceiling in the Metrodome in fair territory.
With two out in the third inning May 4, Frank Viola of the Twins sent a low fastball Kingman's way. Kingman hit it up, up, up and right through a seven-inch-wide drainage hole in the first layer of the roof.
The Twins' infielders gathered near the mound and peered skyward. Shortstop Houston Jimenez covered his head, fearing he might be bopped by a falling object.
"it was like a rocket going off," said Twins second baseman Tim Teufel. "I was waiting for it to come down through the atmosphere. I knew it had to land near the pitcher's mound somewhere."
Umpire crew chief Jim Evans declared the drive a roof-rule double. A's manager Steve Boros said a ground rule--make that a sky rule--about a ball being lost in the roof never had been discussed.
"That's like a hole-in-one in my book," said Twins first baseman Mickey Hatcher.
Kingman had never been to the Metrodome before. He called the place a "hitter's paradise, an unbelieveable hitter's park," He proved that later in the game by hitting his 11th homer of the season, a drive to left center off Ron Davis.
The next day, a stadium official tried to retrieve the ball that was lodged in the roof, but couldn't reach the real one. So he dropped a substitute through the hole and Hatcher dropped it.
"Hit my leg," Hatcher said. "I didn't even get my glove on it. I felt so dumb."

1920: Ray Chapman.

1975: the Superdome opened in New Orleans. The project was a - so far - unsuccessful attempt to land a Major League team. In Boston, Fred Lynn won both the Rookie of the Year and the MVP.

1963: Jesus Alou joined his brothers Matty and Felipe in the Giants' outfield. The first time an outfield was comprised of three brothers.

1951: Eddie Gaedel.

1987: the first MVP ever awarded to anyone on a last place team went to Andre Dawson.

1948 (8/20): 78,382 fans watched Satchel Paige and the Indians beat the White Sox. The record still stands for night game attendance.

1983 (7/24): the Pine Tar Game.

Hey Clay...make that "RFK" Stadium

1926: An aging Grover Cleveland Alexander, rumored to be hung over, pitches 2 1/3 shutout innings on zero days rest to seal a Cardinals victory in Game 7 of the World Series. He capped the win by catching Babe Ruth stealing.

1920: The last triple-header in major league history is played between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.

1932: 49-year old Jack Quinn becomes the oldest pitcher to win a major league game.

1990--a game between the brewers and the blue jays, at toronto, is delayed for thirty-five minutes, not on account of rain, but on account of bugs.

1911 (not sure this one is true, but it's what i always heard)--joe jackson becomes the only player in major league history to hit .400 in his rookie season without winning the batting title that year (joe jackson hit .408, ty cobb hit .420)

On June 30, 1894 Fred Clarke of the Louisville Colonels and on May 16, 1933, Cecil Travis of the Washington Senators made their Major League debuts and both went five-for-five at the plate.

The only one since Major League Baseball began in 1871, anyway.

27-10, Steve Carlton's win-loss record with the Phillies in 1972, when the team won just 59 games! And I thought Randy Johnson was dominant last year.

1907: the Brooklyn Dodgers added a check pattern to their road uniforms. Being years before anyone thought about pinstripes, it didn't go over well.

1937: the Brooklyn Dodgers changed their uniform color to Kelly Green - a Major League first - instead of their usual Dodger Blue. They switched back for the following season.

Clay, I put up a daily trivia question on IL30 board for most the last month. Had a few that stumped michael's little group of historians. :) Search the board for "trivia" and you will find a bunch of them.

1900:
The Brooklyn Superbas are the first World Champions of the 1900's, going 82-54 to win the National League pennant. The following year a rival circuit, the American League, is born.

1901:
The American League of Professional Baseball Clubs is founded with eight teams.

1902:
The Pittsburgh Pirates win their second straight National League pennant in convincing fashion, posting a 103-36 record and besting second-place Brooklyn by 27 1/2 games.

1903:
The first modern World Series is played as the National League champion Pittsburgh Pirates take on the rival American League kingpin Boston Pilgrims. Though underdogs, the Pilgrims take the inaugural series in 8 games.

1904:
The Boston Pilgrims are denied a chance to become baseball's first repeat World Series champions as New York Giants manager John McGraw refuses to allow his team to participate in what would have been the second fall classic.

2005 - a Spring Training game between the Rockies and Diamondbacks, in Tucson, is cancelled, not on account of rain, but on account of bees. hehehehehe

1988: Jose Oquendo played at least one inning at all nine positions, the first player to do so in 70 years.
