When did steroid usage PEAK?

When did steroid usage reach its PEAK in Major League Baseball?

It definately had a lot to do with the Sosa-McGwire battle. The peak was most definately connected both to that and Barry Bonds.

i think that it peaked in 90-92...

because in 1993 is when homeruns exploded. And steriods doesnt effect players right away...it is after they work out...and learn to swing with there new bodies. I think it peaked between 90-92'

And those players were the ones who killed baseball in the late 90's in early 00's

I do have to add one thing...Steriods may have killed McGuire's Rep...but he had the ablitity to hit 70 homeruns when he was a rookie before the steriods took in effect.

I'm gonna say it hasn't peaked.
Here are some interesting numbers and names: the first number for each player is their lifetime 162 GP avg for HR, the second is their career high for HR, and the third is the year the career high was achieved.

As HGM said 1st up Davey Johnson: 15, 43, 1973
As rage said next up Brady Anderson: 19, 50, 1996
Then we have Luis Gonzalez: 22, 57, 2001
Then we kick it old school with Cy Williams: 20, 41, 1923
How about Roger ("the original asterisk") Maris?: 30, 61, 1961
Finally one I was stunned to see: Yaz: 22, 44, 1967

Just because these guys are here doesn't mean they enhanced their performance in any way, at least we'll never be able to prove it. I only looked at guys whose career high for HR was 40 or higher and for whom the career 162 game average was one half of that or lower. The 162 game career average of course includes the career high. This is far from a scientific study. It's just interesting especially the fact that only 2 of the six examples are from the "steroid" era.
