the video at the 2min to 2:30 mark mentions this - 1/3rd had none of the product, 60% were 'adulterated' with unlabelled items. Obviously there's some crossover between the two.
So the results are like
<= 40% were 100% right
60% were adulterated in some way
~33% had none of the named/marketed item at all
Pretty scary if you are considering buying those supplements, or currently take them
agreed. and it doesn't go into some of the concerning side effects that the "healthy" items they have omitted are presumed by some to have. Many of these vitamins/herbs are genetically modified to enhance their performance. I had a cousin last week trying to get me to drink an energy drink which was supposedly the best thing since sliced break, did not have any caffeine or sugar, pretty much a large dose of B12 obtained from many of the "all natural" products. Unfortunately a little research showed some of the products used in that drink to give it taste and 'umph' were created while trying to perfect insecticides. Yeah, sounds yummy.

Re: Depressing News Item of the Day
So I've been taking food, exercise, and health as my first priority the past few weeks...I have a 7 pound drop to show for it, and I placed in the playoffs in tennis, so I was happy. Then I start reading up on the food angle, to improve that side as well. A few Netflix documentaries later, I saw this:
http://www.scientificamerican.com/ar...s-exposure-bpa
So chemicals have been experimented with large scale since the '40s...a lot of these make it into our foods, some wrapping or packaging, others as preservatives, colors, etc. So in the span of a few generations, we've gone from pretty much naturally occurring things in our umbilical cords, to over 200 chemicals. That's chemicals like plastic and man-made stuff, going into our newborns' bodies and assaulting their weak, developing organs.
Allergies, autism, ADD and ADHD...it almost makes sense now, why these things have skyrocketed in 30-40 years. The unnatural crap we eat contains toxins...these toxins stick around in us, and we pass them on to the next generation, screwing them over exponentially more - before they're even born.
Ugh. Maybe when I adopt, I can adopt from a primitive culture that will only have minimal exposure to all this. Blech.

Just what 'primitive culture' do you think AOW is adopting from?
And why do you assume that an individual would prefer the risk of getting cancer to the risk of cholera?
-
Re: Depressing News Item of the Day
AOW seems the kind of dude if he were to adopt, adopt someone from an impoverished state and that would only be a plus for a child to go from that to where AOW is.
I feel icky for being nice now. Excuse me while I go shower.

I actually kinda agree (not being a dick part, but lightening up). I'm not sure if he is arguing just for the sake of it, or if that is really how he feels. I don't really understand it. Would you rather AOW overpopulate the earth further or take someone already born into a bad situation to make for a better life?
-
Re: Depressing News Item of the Day
Overpopulating the earth with AOW spawn, even worse than normal overpopulation. :p

I just found the juxtaposition of AOW's statements interesting.
PART 1) The food in America has all kinds of **** in it
PART 2) I want to adopt a kid from a place that doesn't have this **** in it and bring them to America where the food has **** in it.

That's one example of a "primitive culture".
But that's kind of like the comparison that comes up between the US and Somalia on occasion when regulations are mentioned.
Not every 'primitive culture' is in squalor and abject poverty.

NC Senator Bob Rucho uses twitter to compare Obama to Nazis, terrorists, etc
Quote:
“Justice Robert’s (sic) pen & Obamacare has (sic) done more damage to the USA then (sic) the swords of the Nazis,Soviets & terrorists combined.”
As of today he stands by his tweet as 'the truth'
Totally keeping a cool head about political BS. Thanks, senator from my state...
-
Re: Depressing News Item of the Day
I believe the great Senator from NC is correct as to the SUFFERING that has been INFLICTED upon the middle class with this new law of the land starting in 2014. With each passing week more and more Americans are in agreement with the Senator. However it may not be until 2016 that you as well will be affected by the new law.

Re: Depressing News Item of the Day
Even if I concede that public opinion has dropped a few points around the law (not surprising considering the fear, ignorance and misinformation being tossed), is there any cause at all to liken it to genocide? Doesn't that kind of make the debate idiotic?
This just reminds me of spoiled brat children. If one thing is forced on them, or restricted from them, suddenly they have the worst parent EVER, and they are being TORTURED. Get over it, holy hell. If there are legitimate concerns with the healthcare act, you have to pull up your pants and admit it's not an effing Gulag before we can take you seriously.
http://www.kutv.com/news/features/po.../vid_697.shtml
Quote:
According to the survey, 43% say they oppose the health care law because it is too liberal, with 15% saying they give the measure a thumbs down because it is not liberal enough.
So if you are counting, the lowest approval ever so far goes like this:
35% straight in favor
15% think it DOESNT GO FAR ENOUGH (as in, no single-payer solution, etc)
43% straight opposed
So 50% or more of the country STILL supports this law as a MINIMUM - many of them prefer even more liberal reform. This is after a terribly botched rollout and what, almost 5 straight years of direct misinformation (death panels, etc). And there STILL isn't a majority against it. It's kind of laughable.
Once medical costs actually start shrinking, and people come face to face with the overwhelming benefits they get, this is going to get funny. Republicans are going to have to find a way to say they didn't really oppose it all that much...and I'd bet my life savings that Fox News will be running something around Republican credit for some of it somewhere around 2016-2017.
lol @ 'suffering inflicted'. I've seen first-hand the suffering inflicted by sh*tty insurance companies for over a decade, while people rot and die of their curable (but expensive) conditions. To compare a buggy website or mandated coverage to the pain and death in the name of profits that our healthcare system has delivered for over 30 years is despicable, and you should be ashamed.

That's it. Though it's been 10 years since I worked in the medical field, I do know as going through some health issues, before this law was passed, the healthcare system has been a huge joke as it was. Why anyone would be ok with status quo is beyond me. I haven't done any research on it, because I havent had issues in the last few years, but how could it possibly be any worse than what it was?

Even more depressing is that some people who consider themselves politically astute are so stupid that they think that getting warmer means it can't get cold.
Even more depressing than that is that some people are such absolute jackasses that they are actually happy about the misfortune of others.

Chris Christie's staff was responsible for the traffic closures that led to severe issues in the town of a politician that did not endorse him for re-election.

Not good for the Repubs' top presidential contender in 2016.

Agreed but I think it'll blow over. Afterall, the IRS being used to target conservative groups seeking non-exempt status has pretty much disappeared into the, "nothing here to see, move along" category. Unless a direct link can be made to Christie, his actions to hold those on his staff accountable will be spun and may actually reinforce the straight shooter no-nonsense image he has tried to manifest.

Re: Depressing News Item of the Day
I largely agree with Dickay on Christie's issue, but found this interesting:
http://thinkprogress.org/home/2014/0...ired-vendetta/
Quote:
But while Christie claimed that this was “not the way this administration has conducted itself over the last four years” and denied being a bully, accusations ofpolitical retribution have long surrounded the governor. For instance, former Gov. Richard Codey (D) accused the Christie administration of “sending a message” by denying him state trooper protection after he publicly disagreed with Christie. The same day, a Codey cousin was fired from his position at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and a former Codey aide was removed from the New Jersey Office of Consumer Affairs.
After then State Sen. Sean Kean (R) told a reporter that Christie erred in not calling for a state of emergency sooner, during a 2010 blizzard, Christie’s staff banned Kean from attending the next news conference Christie held in Kean’s home district. A Christie aide told the Star-Ledger that Kean “got what he deserved.” Rutgers Professor Alan Rosenthal saw his state funding slashed after backing a re-districting map more favorable to Democrats and last year, confirmation of a judicial candidate recommended by State Sen. Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R) suddenly stalled after the legislator voted against Christie’s public medical education system reorganization.
On Thursday, the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey announced that he would be opening up another investigation into the lane closings, joining the state legislature and the inspector general of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, who are conducting investigations of their own.
So either a) this is modus operandi from his administration, or b) he hires and surrounds himself with terrible people and manages them incompetently.

Re: Depressing News Item of the Day
Ugh.
You should stop eating shrimp. Forever.
Quote:
As for health risks, Richardson says that most shrimp is not inspected by the FDA. In fact, when researchers tested imported ready-to-eat shrimp, they found 162 separate varieties of bacteria with resistance to 10 different antibiotics.
Quote:
Farmed shrimp are kept in pools on the coast, where the tide can refresh the water and carry waste out to sea. Ponds are prepared with heavy doses of chemicals such as urea, superphosphate, and diesel. Then the shrimp receive pesticides, antibiotics (some that are banned in the U.S., but used overseas), piscicides (fish-killing chemicals like chlorine), sodium tripolyphosphate, borax, and caustic soda.
Shrimp farmers have destroyed an estimated 38 percent of the world’s mangroves to create shrimp ponds, and the damage is permanent. Not only do the mangroves not return long after production has ended, but the surrounding areas become wastelands. According to a Yale University research paper, shrimp farming has made certain areas of Bangladesh completely unlivable for people: “The introduction of brackish-water shrimp aquaculture… has, in turn, caused massive depeasantization and ecological crisis throughout the region.”
Quote:
wild shrimp isn’t a better option because it usually involves the use of deep-sea trawlers, which kills 5 to 20 pounds of “bycatch” (unwanted species of fish accidentally scooped up by the trawler’s net) for every pound of shrimp. Trawling is comparable to bulldozing an entire section of rainforest to catch a single species of bird. “[The bycatch] includes sharks, rays, starfish, juvenile red snapper, sea turtles and more. While shrimp trawl fisheries only represent 2 percent of the global fish catch, they are responsible for over one-third of the world’s bycatch.” Then the bycatch gets tossed over the side of the boat.
Shrimp is the first seafood to be crossed off my list on the way to vegetarian-ism...aside from all the stuff I already don't eat (clams, oysters, squid, calamari - or bung)
Quote:
and a taste test showed that switching rectums for calamari might indeed go undetected.
-
Re: Depressing News Item of the Day
Glad I never liked shrimp to begin with.
-
Re: Depressing News Item of the Day
I love shrimp and will continue to eat them.
I've pretty much given up hope this world ever being non-toxic to the masses or for reasonable treatment for animals.
