Lowlife scuzball welfare queen busted for using Food Stamps.
Or not...

Nerger said the reason she and her family - she is married with a daughter - must rely on food stamps is because her husband's carpentry business isn't profitable enough to support the family.
Meanwhile, Nerger must devote 12 hours every night to a dialysis treatment to combat her kidney disease, which she's struggled with since the age of 11. She's been on a kidney transplant list for five years and hopes that someday, after a successful transplant, she can become a working member of society. She would like to attend college to major in child psychology.
"There's just so much stigmatism put on people on food stamps. They're just some losers who don't want to work. That isn't the case in every situation," she said.

Re: Lowlife scuzball welfare queen busted for using Food Stamps.
Change jobs or get better at teh caprentry.
-
Re: Lowlife scuzball welfare queen busted for using Food Stamps.
Maybe he is really good at "teh caprentry" and has been profitable for many years. Then for the last 3 or 4 years he's been doing poorly while the economy tanks. Maybe he is still paying off loans for equipment, truck and other things he needed at start up.
One does not simply change jobs.

Re: Lowlife scuzball welfare queen busted for using Food Stamps.
One does if one wishes to have healthcare and food.

Changing jobs is not as simple as "Hey, time for a new job. Oh cool, GOT IT!"

Re: Lowlife scuzball welfare queen busted for using Food Stamps.
I know it's not easy. What exactly is your point though?

That telling someone that needs the help of welfare/food stamps to "just get a job" is pointless and many times insensitive.

Re: Lowlife scuzball welfare queen busted for using Food Stamps.
It's not easy, however it's also not impossible. Why be allowed to collect year after year??? I understand a period of time but the dude had YEARS to get his crap straightened out.

Where are you getting this from? I don't see any information regarding this family's use of food stamps in the article, beyond the fact that they're currently on food stamps.

Re: Lowlife scuzball welfare queen busted for using Food Stamps.
From the article Yahoo stole the story from in the first place:
Nerger said she started receiving food stamps, formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, when she became eligible for Medicare and Social Security Supplemental Income because of kidney failure in 2008. While she waits for a kidney transplant, she cannot work because of daily 12-hour dialysis treatments. Her husband runs a carpentry business. "If he doesn't get a call [for a job] we don't have any extra money for the month," she said.

Ok. The women is very ill and is unable to work. She has a daughter to provide for. Her father runs a business, but it is not a guaranteed consistent income due to the nature of the business. Finding a job in a new field likely requires education, which is very expensive. "Get better at teh carpentry" is an insensitive, stupid suggestion. For one, you do not know what his skills are. For two, it is not his lack of ability, but rather that sometimes, there's simply a lack of work.

HoustonGM is right. With jobs/businesses of this type, it's feast of famine as far as income goes.

don't know why you bother with this thread.
anyway.....to be a moderate voice here.....I think LQZwhatever's comments were extremely insensitive and unwarranted. I also think that too many people write these situations off to a "bad economy" and some other bad luck. Neither reaction is obviously fully informed on the situation so neither should be so extreme.
I think they should be questioned and audited to an extent and held to some reasonable standards. Her medical treatment is extremely expensive, and the family assistance may well be warranted. There may also be some abuse, some assets, something that can be reasonably done to help the income situation. Do you know how many people work these type of businesses and deal in cash, don't report it, and write off the majority of reportable income as a loss? Hard to prove, but I see it happen frequently. After four years, I question why he's hanging onto a failing business and not liquidating and going to work as an employee. It's a fair question. Maybe the reason for hanging on is that it's more profitable than he'd like you to believe? Or maybe there's a valid reason for it.
The govt. doesn't demand nearly enough in return for it's generosity and doesn't do enough to prevent abuse. On the flip there are alot of people truly in need and they should get assistance. It's a fine balance so that too much red tape doesn't bog down the system but that line is presently way too far on the side of too little oversight. Point is, nobody should think it's one or the other, nobody should label anyone's situation without intimate knowledge of it. Attack the system, not the player.

Re: Lowlife scuzball welfare queen busted for using Food Stamps.
First off most of the unskilled carpenters were smart enough to have left around here and gone back to Mexico .. due to the lack of available work these last 4 years.
If the lady can't work why does she not sign up for Disability Insurance?
I don't think you ought to "zing" Kobie if he hasn't post something in the thread yet ... That isn't PC and is pretty low down IMO. :)

She had applied and was approved for SSDI - which means she has incredible insurance actually. Maybe not for her extreme condition but she has both Medicaid and Medicare. I don't blame her really. I blame the husband that has had 4 years to make a difference... actually no, I blame Obama.
