Nerger said the reason she and her family - she is married with a daughter - must rely on food stamps is because her husband's carpentry business isn't profitable enough to support the family.
Meanwhile, Nerger must devote 12 hours every night to a dialysis treatment to combat her kidney disease, which she's struggled with since the age of 11. She's been on a kidney transplant list for five years and hopes that someday, after a successful transplant, she can become a working member of society. She would like to attend college to major in child psychology.
"There's just so much stigmatism put on people on food stamps. They're just some losers who don't want to work. That isn't the case in every situation," she said.

Change jobs or get better at teh caprentry.
Re: Lowlife scuzball welfare queen busted for using Food Stamps.
Maybe he is really good at "teh caprentry" and has been profitable for many years. Then for the last 3 or 4 years he's been doing poorly while the economy tanks. Maybe he is still paying off loans for equipment, truck and other things he needed at start up.
One does not simply change jobs.
Re: Lowlife scuzball welfare queen busted for using Food Stamps.
One does if one wishes to have healthcare and food.

Changing jobs is not as simple as "Hey, time for a new job. Oh cool, GOT IT!"
Re: Lowlife scuzball welfare queen busted for using Food Stamps.
I know it's not easy. What exactly is your point though?

That telling someone that needs the help of welfare/food stamps to "just get a job" is pointless and many times insensitive.
Re: Lowlife scuzball welfare queen busted for using Food Stamps.
It's not easy, however it's also not impossible. Why be allowed to collect year after year??? I understand a period of time but the dude had YEARS to get his crap straightened out.

Where are you getting this from? I don't see any information regarding this family's use of food stamps in the article, beyond the fact that they're currently on food stamps.
Re: Lowlife scuzball welfare queen busted for using Food Stamps.
From the article Yahoo stole the story from in the first place:
Nerger said she started receiving food stamps, formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, when she became eligible for Medicare and Social Security Supplemental Income because of kidney failure in 2008. While she waits for a kidney transplant, she cannot work because of daily 12-hour dialysis treatments. Her husband runs a carpentry business. "If he doesn't get a call [for a job] we don't have any extra money for the month," she said.

Ok. The women is very ill and is unable to work. She has a daughter to provide for. Her father runs a business, but it is not a guaranteed consistent income due to the nature of the business. Finding a job in a new field likely requires education, which is very expensive. "Get better at teh carpentry" is an insensitive, stupid suggestion. For one, you do not know what his skills are. For two, it is not his lack of ability, but rather that sometimes, there's simply a lack of work.

HoustonGM is right. With jobs/businesses of this type, it's feast of famine as far as income goes.
