2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Sox owner to fans, "We're all in"
Glendale, AZ - It's a particularly warm and dry day in the middle of March, hundreds of miles away from where the 2011 version of the Chicago White Sox will play home games. The Camelback Ranch is where things like the competitions of third base, the fifth outfielder and who will break camp with the big club while Jake Peavy recovers from his latest set back will be decided. Today, however, there is a different buzz around the complex. Today, Owner and Chairman of the Board, Jerry Reinsdorf is at the Ranch catching an early glimpse at what his team record 140 million dollar payroll looks like.
"Ultimately after last season's failure to overtake the Twins, we had to take a hard and long look at this team as currently constructed. We were close to pushing the button and trading our assets, attempting a rebuild. Kenny (Williams, White Sox GM) was in my ear trying to convince me to spend more and add to the club. I guess this is on him. We have made a profit the last three years, so we can afford to invest some of that into this year's club. Kenny is convinced we just needed to add a couple pieces and bring back (Paul) Konerko and A.J. (Pierzynski). I've long believed that when we win, the fans will show up and support us. We hope that is right, because this year, we're all in. We can afford to lose money this year, but we can't lose money two years in a row.
"It's going to be an exciting summer for Chicago fans. Our Bulls are in first place, We've brought in Adam Dunn and Jake Peavy looks to be mostly healthy. I would put our five starters against any team's in the league. That's how strongly we feel about our positioning.", Reinsdorf said.
When asked about the team's chances to out draw the Chicago Cubs in attendance in the near future, the Chairman didn't pull any punches. "When you look at both situations as a sports fan, as a baseball fan. Do you want to invest your entertainment dollars on a team that admittedly is cutting payroll and putting an inferior product on the field? Or do you want to spend those same dollars on a team that is going out there and doing everything it can to compete this season? Maybe Wrigley Field will crumble and then we can lead the league in attendance."
After spending over 120 million dollars this off-season on Free Agents and contract extentions, it is understandable that there is a feeling of urgency surrounding the White Sox. The South Siders look poised to bring a Central Division title back to the city for the first time in 3 years. If they fail again this year, or get off a slow start, we can expect to see a few changes. Only time will tell the story of the 2011 Chicago White Sox. For now, the sun is shining and hope springs eternal.

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
League Settings: Contract Renewals/Length +20%, Trade Frequency -20% April/May, +0% June, +50% July-March, Scouting Perfect, Farm/Medical Excellent, Injury Frequency -10%, Manager difficulty. $20 million in cash added to the White Sox franchise to help hedge the $140m in-game roster, when the real opening day payroll is $124m. (Mogul can not emulate deferred compensation and Reinsdorf is on record with saying he is willing to spend his own money this year if the White Sox do not turn a profit with their larger than ever payroll.)
Ideally I want to chronicle the Chicago White Sox franchise the way I know them. I will incorporate "characters" in my dynasty, but you won't be privy to any "behind the scenes" discussions or knowledge. Everything you read will be in an article style format. I'm going to add full breakdown segments like cameras are following the GM, the Owner and the Manager at certain times. (Think of 'The Association' or 'The Office' tv series.)
I will be doing every game in PBP mode with full recaps based on game/series importance. Articles like the one in the first post will be common place for the White Sox and will also highlight special happenings around the league in the same way. This is by far and away my favorite team, and I've been reading the dynasties on here for awhile and have decided to jump in head first. The interesting thing with this team are all the personalities are either in the front office or on the coaching staff, so figuring out a way to make it interesting for the readers as the roster changes throughout the dynasty will be rather natural.
Furthermore, I am no one's "alt". I am a relative new-comer to the community and would enjoy any feedback/help/comments while cultivating this dynasty.
The next post to follow will be an in-depth season preview. Thanks for reading this far!

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Catcher
Starter - A.J. Pierzynski (79) - He's been a model of consistentcy since arriving on the South Side in 2005. You know what you get with him, 15 home runs, 60 RBI and an arm that is neither an asset nor a liability. He made one all-star appearance with the White Sox in 2006 and led the team in batting average in 2009 with .300
Bench - Ramon Castro (76) - Never notching more than 250 plate appearances in any season in his career, Ramon has managed to remain in the big leagues for 13 seasons with his rocket arm and decent pop. He's going to be looked upon for a larger role this season, especially against lefties as Pierzynski is getting up there in innings logged and the White Sox look to preserve him for a stretch run.
Top Prospect - Tyler Flowers (76/79) - The White Sox love two things about this 25 year old rookie. He knows how to handle a pitching staff and has decent power. He'll never be a star in the league, but when it is his turn to start in the show, he will provide adequate numbers.
First Base
Starter - Paul Konerko (83) - After a career year at the age of 34, he was rewarded with a 3 year/37 million dollar extension. Long a fan favorite for the Sox, he is known for his horrendously slow starts and hot finishes. If he sandwiches somewhere between 2009 (.277/.353/.489) and 2010 (.312/.393/.584) forms, the Sox will get their money's worth. He is a 4-time all-star (2002, 2005, 2006, 2010) and a 10-5 player.
Bench - Committee - Adam Dunn will get starts here and there, so will Dayan Viciedo when he returns. Mark Teahan, Omar vizquel and Brent Lillibridge could all spot start in a pinch.
Top Prospect - Dayan Viciedo (75/81) - This 22 year old will start the year on the disabled list, but will get his fair share of at-bats at both 1B and 3B. He projects to be a servicable hitter with decent average and power. He needs to work on his plate discipline after only 2 walks against 25 strikeouts in 102 at-bats in 2010.
Second Base
Starter - Gordon Beckham (82/89) - The 24 year old went through a sophomore slump after finishing second in the rookie of the year voting in 2009. Still a major player in the White Sox future and considered an "untouchable", Beckham should be more consistent in his second full year at 2B.
Bench - Brent Lillibridge(73), Omar Vizquel(72) - Neither expects to have to spell Beckham very often, but when the need arises both are light hitting yet above average defensive replacements.
Top Prospect - Gordon Beckham (82/89) - SEE ABOVE (STARTER)
Third Base
Starter - Brent Morel (78/81) - The 23 year old rookie won the job over Mark Teahan due to his already gold glove caliber defense. He will likely never be more than a bottom of the order hitter and not a long-term solution at the hot corner.
Bench - Mark Teahan (77) - Projects as a better hitter than Morel and could get his fair share of starts. Could also become expendable as soon as Dayan Viciedo is ready to play around May 1st.
Top Prospect - Brent Morel (78/81) - SEE ABOVE (STARTER)
Shortstop
Starter - Alexei Ramirez (85) - After winning the silver-slugger award in 2010, Alexei was rewarded with an extension through 2015 that will pay him $6.85m annually. One of the better offensive options at a weaker offensive position in the AL. He's also a slick fielder with an above average arm and range but tends to boot the routine balls. At the age of 29, he figures to play into the Sox long-term plans.
Bench - Brent Lillibridge(73), Omar Vizquel(72) - Again, neither will be called upon very often, but when they are expect light bats but good defense.
Top Prospect - Eduardo Escobar (71/82) - The 22 year old will start 2011 at AA Birmingham. He's another light-hitting, good defense shortstop. He likely projects as an eventual bench guy for the White Sox or as trade bait for deadline pieces.
Left Field
Starter - Juan Pierre (75) - Entering his 12th MLB season and 2nd with the Sox, the 33 year old stole 68 bases last season. He is the lead off hitter for this team and in a contract year, so seeing better than average numbers from him wouldn't be a stretch. Expect him to be traded mid-season if the Sox are not in the pennant hunt.
Bench - Lastings Milledge (77/79) - This former top prospect is on his 4th team at the age of 25. He will routinely replace Pierre defensively in late situations or provide a servicable bat for all 3 OF positions when anyone needs a breather. May also be playing for the LF job in 2012.
Top Prospect - NONE - The cupboard is very bare.
Center Field
Starter - Alex Rios (83) - The rangy CF returned to decent form last season with a .284/.334/.457 line after the Sox took a flier by claiming him off waivers late in 2009 from the Blue Jays. The two time all-star (2006, 2007) looks to the CF through 2014 as his rather large contract is fairly untradable. He potential for 20+ HR, but a 30-30 campaign wouldn't be a stretch.
Bench - Lastings Milledge (77/79) - SEE LEFT FIELD (BENCH)
Top Prospect - Jordan Danks (73/77) - The 24 year old brother of star pitcher John Danks projects as nothing more than a career defensive replacement or pinch runner. He is well above average at both, but his bat leaves much to be desired.
Right Field
Starter - Carlos Quentin (81) - In a contract year, this 28 year old and former MVP candidate is hoping to bounce back from two down years, stay healthy and return to 30+ HR form. The 2008 All-star is expected to be a huge part of the White Sox offense in 2011 or as trade bait come deadline time.
Bench - Lastings Milledge (77/79, Mark Teahan (77) - The oft-injured Quentin could miss significant playing time if he's unlucky. Teahan and Milledge would provide servicable back-ups platooning in that role, however there isn't much pop here.
Top Prospect - NONE - The cupboard is very bare.
Designated Hitter
Starter - Adam Dunn (88) - Dunn has put up at least 38 HRs in each of the last 7 seasons. The left handed slugger signed a 4 year deal worth 54 million in the off-season and enters possibly the most HR-friendly park in all of the majors. With just being able to focus on each at-bat as they come, he has a chance to top 50 Home Runs.
STAY TUNED FOR THE PITCHING PREVIEW AND PROJECTIONS!

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Starter #1 - Mark Buehrle (89/95/69/88) - No one, other than Paul Konerko, has meant or done more for this franchise in the last 10 years. He is undoubtedly the ace of the staff and is looking to rebound from a down year in 2010. Buehrle has made the all-star game 4 times (2002, 2005, 2006, 2009) and has pitched a perfect game along with another no-hitter. The 32 year old is entering the final year of his contract, and as a 10-5 player has stated he will only accept a trade to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Starter #2 - John Danks (91/81/82/85) - The 25 year old has flashed Cy Young caliber stuff throughout his 4 year career. Entering his 5th season , he is still arbitration eligible and the White Sox have no plans to lock him in long-term during the season. If he takes another step forward in his progression, they will have no choice but to invest more dollars in this talented young lefty.
Starter #3 - Gavin Floyd (91/80/83/78) - According to the fine folks at Elias, Gavin Floyd has taken the most no-hitters into the 6th inning or better than anyone in the majors the last 2 seasons combined. It's no surprise that the lanky curveballer has shown dominant stuff early in games. If he can string together strong finishes to go with is strong starts, he could be the unquestioned leader of this staff in the next few years.
Starter #4 - Jake Peavy (90/84/95/87) - 3 full seasons removed from his Cy Young win in 2007, this 29 year old flame thrower has spent the majority of the last two seasons on the disabled list. In 2010, just as he was getting his velocity back, he tore his latimus dorsi forcing season-ending surgery. While Peavy will start the year on the disabled list, the Sox hope he will give them 25 starts this year and have a healthy, fresh arm for the pennant push in August and September.
Starter #5 - Edwin Jackson (93/74/80/74) - Rumor has it, the Washington Nationals told General Manager Kenny Williams that if he acquired Jackson before the trade deadline last year, they would send left handed slugger Adam Dunn to the South Side. It is now 2011, and while that trade never materialized, Dunn is now a Sox uniform, and Jackson is making $8.35M to be the team's 5th starter. Depending on the health of Peavy, he could be traded near the deadline for bullpen or offensive help.
Top Prospect - Andre Rienzo (60/81) - The 22 year old will start the season in rookie ball. He projects as a 4th or 5th starter on a contender or a stop-gap on a non-contender. Nothing impressive from him with a fastball topping out in the low 90's.
Closer - Matt Thornton (81/98/86) - Under contract for the next 3 years, the 34 year old has widely been regarded as the best setup man in all of baseball for the last couple seasons. It is now time for him to be the man who closes the games, after Bobby Jenks was non-tendered and subsequently signed with the Red Sox. He has a dominant fastball that can hit 100 on occassion.
Setup - Chris Sale (86/98/76) (88/94) - The 21 year old rookie was dominant in his brief stint with the big club after being drafted in the first round of June's amateur draft. With a fastball topping out in the mid 90s, he has stuff capable of dominating hitters and if Matt Thornton falters in his new closer role, he has the ego to take over. Projecting as a starter out of college, the White Sox feel his stuff is better suited for the bullpen in 2011 as they attempt to bring a World Series title back to the South Side for the first time since 2005.
Short Relief - Jesse Crain (70/89/78) - This right hander has been known to be able to strike out enough hitters to make up for his poor commmand. A long-time Twin, he signed a 3 year deal in the off-season to come pitch for the Sox.
Short Relief - Sergio Santos (68/93/76) - The former middle infielder converted nicely to a reliever last season during spring training, and despite being a long-shot to make the team in 2010 was awarded a spot on the 25-man opening day roster. All he did after that was post a 2.96 ERA and struck out 56 batters in 51.2 IP. Main cause for concern with the 27 year old is his 26 walks in those innings.
Lefty Specialist - Will Ohman (68/91/75) - The 33 year old was brought in a two-year deal to help shut down the left handed power bats that Minnesota employs. His career .209 OBA against left-handers is very impressive, and the Sox look to use him in key important games down the stretch against the likes of Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, Jim Thome and Denard Span.
Long Relief - Tony Pena (76/74/73) - Pena will mostly see mop-up duty for this club. Notching 100 innings last year in relief, he was able to make 3 spot starts. He is neither dominant, nor a huge liability, but projecting as the worst reliever on this team, he is the glorified innings eater.
Top Prospect - Chris Sale - SEE ABOVE (SETUP)

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Diminutive Outfielder no stranger to big games.
Glendale, AZ - It's 5:30 A.M. at the Camelback Ranch and out of the two teams that share this spring training facility (The Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox both utilize it), Juan Pierre is the only human on the complex. At 33, he is in the best physical shape of his career and makes no attempt to hide it.
"You get to a point in your career where you can't coast on physical talent alone. I'm never going to hit home runs, so I have to take advantage of every edge I have to stay relevant to this team. They say the first thing to go is your speed, then your eye, then your power. Well, I had no power to begin with, so I have to train harder than these kids to keep my skill set. I am playing for my next contract, and I want to play baseball for another 5 or 10 years." Pierre said.
The White Sox coaching staff raves about Pierre's work ethic and his 68 steals and 96 runs scored show that he is far from washed up, but in the end this is a business. In the final year of a 5 year, $44M contract signed in 2007 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Sox are going to be forced into a tough personnel decision in the coming months.
"I wish we could keep all player on this team, I like them all.", said White Sox skipper Ozzie Guillen. "It business this game we play, I don't crunch the number, that Kenny's decision. He is big shot, he makes the calls."
Pierre has played in and won a World Series ring in 2003 with the Florida Marlins, and then in two consecutive League Championship Series with the Dodgers in 2008 and 2009. The White Sox were in the hunt for Pierre's 3rd straight post-season, but ultimately fell short of the Minnesota Twins. Pierre was a starter on the Marlins team, getting on base a total of 12 times in 6 games in the '03 World Series. He was relegated to a reserve role on his last two Dodger teams, but still saw significant action during both regular seasons.
"Juan is a unique talent, I think this guy can steal 75 bases this year. How many people can do that at any level in this game today? That is worth real money. Lots of teams will line up for Juan's talents, we both just hope it is the White sox. Juan loves his teammates and the city. He never wanted to leave when he was first here in 2006 with the Cubs, it just ended up that way." commented Pierre's agent, Mark Pieper. "Mr. Williams and I have had a few talks this off-season about Juan's future with the team, but he said they're not in a position to discuss a long-term deal with so many factors in limbo."
As stated yesterday, Owner and Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf has stretched the payroll beyond its limits. This is a must win season for the South Side Hitmen, or this team might look very different next year, or even as early as July. Fan support for the team has been growing in the last decade, with the team poised to overtake the Cubs in popularity as long as it can string together playoff appearances and titles. General Manager Williams declined comment on Pierre's contract situation, merely stating, "Juan is a very talented player, I'm glad we were able to bring him in last year. He really helped us stay in the hunt, and we're looking forward to big things from him at the top of the order this year."

White Sox close spring ball sub-.500 but in good spirits
Glendale, AZ - John Danks is ready to play games that matter. He simply stated that winning every game in spring wasn't the main goal, getting out healthy and ready was the goal.
"It's good to break camp with these guys. I'm so ready to pitch, I can't wait to arrive in Cleveland and get to the grind of the season. We, as ball-players, live for this. It's very important that we get off to a good start, and this spring has laid the ground work for that."
Danks has gone 2-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 6 outings during spring training, prompting Manager Ozzie Guillen to pencil him in as the #2 starter. Mark Buehrle will open the season for the White Sox on April 1st against the Cleveland Indians. This will be his 9th opening day start for the Sox. Buehrle currently ranks 6th in franchise history in games started, 8th in wins and innings pitched. He has also pitched 200 innings for 9 consecutive seasons.
"You know who he is. I know who he is. He is who he is. He gives us good chance to win and battles every time he gets the ball.", said Ozzie Guillen. "This is spring ball, we look at result with grain of salt. Everyone is ready, we had a good spring."
The Sox open with a weekend series at the Cleveland Indians with Buehrle projecting to face Fausto Carmona on friday. Danks will take the hill against Justin Masterson on Saturday and Gavin Floyd will pitch against Mitch Talbot on Sunday.
Juan Pierre will lead-off, followed by Alex Rios in the 2-hole. Paul Konerko, Adam Dunn and Carlos Quentin provide the power in the middle of the order, ending with A.J. Pierzynski, Alexei Ramirez, Gordon Beckham and the rookie Brent Morel.
"We just thought that Brent did enough to break camp as the starter. Ultimately it was Ozzie's decision, but I would like to think it was a collaboration of minds.", added Kenny Williams. "His defense will keep that side of the infield secure, and hopefully he can continue to improve with the bat."
Morel hit just .246 in 54 spring at-bats. The White Sox also have Mark Teahen and Dayan Viciedo as options at 3rd base if the rookie proves to be a liability.
"I'm just anxious. I got to play a little last year, but it's good to know the organization is behind you. Mark (Teahen) has been an excellent mentor and even when we were battling for the job, he always helped me out. Now I just have to go out and prove to the doubters that this decision was the right one. I just want to play.", Morel said.
Play he shall. The roster is set, the spring is over. It's time for baseball.

White Sox win debut with 9th inning heroics
Cleveland - Mark Buerhle pitched 8 innings of 2 run ball picking up the victory on opening night against the Indians. He was poised to be the hard-luck loser if not for a 9th inning rally that left the Cleveland faithful reminded of last season. For eight innings, Fausto Carmona kept the White Sox hitters off-balance, not allowing a runner past second base.
Juan Pierre started the ninth inning off with a walk, followed by an Alex Rios single advancing Pierre to 3rd. Konerko kept the inning going with an RBI single making it a 2-1 ballgame and Adam Dunn was hit by a Carmona pitch to load the bases. Carlos Quentin hit a sacrifice fly to right field tying the game and allowing Konerko to advance to 3rd with 1 out. Konerko was lifted in favor of Brent Lillibridge and A.J. Pierzynski got the Sox the lead for good with an RBI double. Matt Thornton worked a perfect ninth to earn the save.
"All game long, I kept saying to myself if I just give us a chance to win, these guys will come through.", said Buerhle. "And, that's exactly what they did. It's a great way to start out the season."
With a win on opening night, the Sox put one foot forward in the right direction. Manager Ozzie Guillen was impressed with the result, but not with the way it happened.
"It was a little exciting for me. Next game, I just hope we dont have that much excitement. Score runs a little earlier, but we take the win."

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Danks and Bullpen shut down Indians
Cleveland - On a cold afternoon in Cleveland, the White Sox and Indians played the second game of the season opening three game series. 26,260 fans showed up to cheer on the hometown Indians, but left in disappointment again.
John Danks pitched six innings of one run baseball and 3 relievers combined to work a scoreless seventh, eight and ninth. The White Sox (2-0) remained perfect with a 2-1 win over the Indians (0-2). The Sox jumped out a 2-0 lead with runs in the third and fourth innings and that was enough for Danks (1-0 1.50ERA).
Justin Masterson (0-1 1.29) stymied the White Sox offense for 7 innings, but received no run support. Asdrubal Cabrera accounted for the only run, driving in Orlando Cabrera. For the Sox, Juan Pierre and A.J. Pierzynski collected RBIs.
"The kid from Cleveland have sick stuff all day, but we escape again. Morel was lucky to get on base when he threw the ball into the stands, allowing Juan to knock him in. We have to figure out how to score more runs if we're going to continue winning.", said Ozzie Guillen. "Do the little things, move the runner along, steal the base."

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Beckham error costs Floyd, Sox game
Cleveland - Gordon Beckham booted a routine grounder with two outs in the second inning, allowing the Indians score 3 runs in the inning and jump out to a 4-2 lead. Ultimately this wound up costing the White Sox (2-1) as they fell to the Indians (1-2) by a score of 6-5.
Gavin Floyd, who allowed 5 runs, 3 of them earned over 5+ innings said that it was the nature of the game. "He didn't allow the next two hits to get through, I did that. Just like he has to pick me up from time to time with his solid defensive play, it's my job to pick them up after mistakes. In the end, I just didn't pitch well enough to get us a victory."
Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski hit a 3-run HR to put the White Sox ahead 5-4 for his 3rd straight game with at least 1 RBI. The Sox now have a travel day before a 2 game set against the Kansas City Royals (3-1) who lead the AL Central in the early going by a half-game over Minnesota and Chicago.

Robinson Cano, Yankees agree to 6 year, 114 million dollar deal
New York - The New York Yankees locked up their 28 year-old franchise 2B through the 2016 season by rewarding Robinson Cano with a new 6 year deal and tearing up the old one.
"Robinson had out played the team options left in his deal, and we made it very clear to Mr. Cashman and Mr. Steinbrenner that if they exercised either option, we were going to test the waters after the 2013 season.", Cano agent Scott Boras had to say. "This deal was able to get done without it getting too heated on either side. Both sides came to an agreement on Robinson's tremendous talent and value."
By completing the deal, the Yankees are giving Robinson an extra $10M over the next two seasons, in hopes that the final three are at somewhat of a discount. GM Brian Cashman and Owner Hank Steinbrenner were not immediately available for comment.

Sox lose in extras due to costly error again
Kansas City - For the second straight game, the White Sox (2-2) are left wanting after allowing unearned runs. This time, it was in the 9th inning as Matt Thornton was trying to nail down the game.
"It's unfortunate really, we have to figure this out. From what I'm seeing, one of the strengths on our team is the weakness in these two losses," said Thornton. "Someone may say we had a 2-run lead when I came in, but I don't want to see a loss like this again, its frustrating."
Rookie Brent Morel led all Sox hitters with 3 hits, his firsts of the season. Going 3-5, he scored a run, but it was not enough to keep the Sox from dropping their second straight game.
"I got it out of the way, now lets focus on winning ballgames. I'm not here for individual accomplishments, I'm here to win games," said the Rookie.
Chris Sale pitched 1 and 2/3 perfect innings, coming on in relief of Edwin Jackson who was in line for the victory until the 9th inning.
Kansas City's (4-1) Jeff Francouer and Alex Gordon each had a pair of RBIs and lead off man Chris Getz opened the game with a HR to pace the Royals to a come from behind victory.
"We have momentum, thats important in this game. I look forward to tomorrow's matchup and getting another home win," said Royals manager Ned Yost.

Behind Sox bats, Buehrle cruises to 2nd win
Kansas City - Getting back on track, the White Sox (3-2) beat the Royals (4-2) 5-1 to pull within a half-game of them. Slugger Paul Konerko hit his first HR of the season and added two RBIs which proved to be enough to win. Mark Buehrle pitched well all game, with his only trouble coming with loading the bases in the 4th inning, but he pitched over the trouble.
"When you get run support, it seems as if you're going to win every game. I had an early 2 run, then 4 run lead and it was easy to just relax and go after the hitters after that," said Buehrle.
Alex Rios and Brent Morel each added 3 hits, making it 6 total for the rookie 3b in the last two games. Sergio Santos worked the 9th allowing 2 base-runners, prompting Matt Thornton to start working in the bullpen, but finished out the inning without allowing a run.
Up next for the White Sox is a 10 game home stand. Starting with 4 against the Tampa Bay Rays (1-4). Lefty John Danks (1-0 1.50) will take the mound against Cy Young runner-up from last year David Price (0-1 6.35).

Price, Rays dominate ChiSox
Chicago - A sell-out crowd was on hand for the White Sox (3-3) home opener as they fell to the Rays (2-4) by a score of 6-2. Tampa Bay starter David Price (1-1 4.26) got off to a rocky start by allowing a 2 run HR to Paul Konerko in the first inning. It was relative smooth sailing after that though, as the Rays scored 6 runs off of John Danks (1-1 6.10) before running him out of the game in the 5th inning.
"He didn't have A-game today. One of days that you look back and say they were just better," said Ozzie Guillen. "Pauly got us off to a good start, but we couldn't get going from there. David Price is best pitcher we face all year, probably."
The attendance figures were encouraging, as the Sox came into the game having already played 5 games on the road, and the home crowd was eager for them to get going in town. However, the loss may hurt attendance figures going forward. Chicago fans are known for staying away during the cold month of April, before showing up the park during the summer. With a payroll over $140M the White Sox need to be able to capitalize on every fan this year, even during the trying month of April.

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Floyd takes no-hit bid into 9th as Sox win 1-0
Chicago - Gavin Floyd fell just short in his latest attempt at a no-hitter. The Chicago White Sox (4-3) pitcher is notoriously known for taking no-hit bids late into games before falling apart. With the Sox up 1-0 in the 9th, Tampa Bay (2-5) hitter Manny Ramirez hit a single to break up the no-hitter with 1 out. Matt Thornton (3SV) came on to close the game.
Floyd (1-0 2.03) was masterful, striking out 10 Rays hitters and keeping them off-balance all game. His curveball was dominant and his fastball seemed to have a little extra pepper. White Sox DH Adam Dunn scored the only run of the game, being driven in by SS Alexei Ramirez.
"There were a few times there, if the defense didn't make a spectacular play, it would have ended awhile ago. My hat is off to the guys behind me for doing such a terrific job. I was a little gassed, but I told Ozzie that I wanted to try to finish the game, after the hit he said I had done more than enough," said Floyd.
Just 33,169 fans were on to see Floyd's gem, as the temperature was a paltry 42F. Billboards are popping up all around the city with the White Sox now familiar "We're all in, are you?" slogan. Nearly the entire city was glued in front of a television as word got out that Floyd was in progress of attempting the club's 3rd no-hitter in as 4 years. Mark Buehrle pitched a no-hitter in 2008 against the Texas Rangers and then a perfect game in 2009 against these very same Rays.

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Sox 7-8-9 hitters break game open in 8th, Sox win 6-3
Chicago - Winning for the 3rd time in their last 4 games, the Chicago White Sox (5-3) kept pace with the Minnesota Twins (6-3) and Kansas City Royals (6-3). The hit parade started with A.J. Pierzynski single, followed by RBIs from Alexei Ramirez, Gordon Beckham, and Brent Morel to break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 8th.
The final RBI by Morel, marked his first of the season. The rookie third sacker is batting .321 but hadn't knocked in a runner yet. After the game, he eluded to getting more comfortable in his new role.
"Every at-bat that I log under my belt, it's getting easier and easier to see the ball, pick up release angles, you know that kind of stuff. A.J. told me he's taking me out tonight, but I think as a rookie that means I'm taking him out, right?" asked Morel.
Rookie initiation and jokes aside, the White Sox look to continue their roll in the final game of the Rays series tomorrow by sending Edwin Jackson to the mound against Wade Davis.

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Rays take lead in 7th, win 7-5
Chicago - Starting pitcher Edwin Jackson (0-1 5.11) struggled to record outs all game long. Many will question Ozzie Guillen's decision to send him back out after narrowly escaping jams in the first 6 innings and running his pitch count over 110.
"I don't give craps about what pitch count say or base runners, not for this guy," said Guillen "He's a professional, we all professionals. I don't have to baby him or protect him from too many pitches, he say he want out there, I let him go out there."
The White Sox (5-4) held a narrow 3-2 lead heading into that fateful 7th inning over the Rays (3-6). It wasn't enough as Jackson allowed Ben Zobrist and Manny Ramirez to reach base to lead off the inning before Guillen pulled him in favor of Jesse Crain (1-1 4.15). After prompting Evan Longoria to fly out, he gave up a 3 run homer to Dan Johnson as the Rays took the lead for good.
"Sometimes leads will be squandered, there's a reason why theres 9 innings in a baseball game and not 6," said DH Adam Dunn, who homered himself "I think we're in a good position, the Royals are only a game ahead of us at this point and we hope to have Peavy back real soon."
The Oakland Athletics (4-5) come to town next in a 3 game set, where Mark Buehrle (2-0 1.69) will take the mound against Tyson Ross (1-0 1.29) in the first game.

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Chicago drops to .500 after 10-8 loss to Oakland
Chicago - Mark Buehrle (2-1 3.86) picked up his first loss of the season, giving up 6 earned runs in just 5 innings of work. It was the pivotal 5th inning that broke the game open for the A's (5-5) as they scored 3 to take a 6-3 lead and never look back.
Kurt Suzuki, Daric Barton and Mark Ellis all homered for the A's as they put on an offensive clinic against the previous unbeaten Buehrle. DH Adam Dunn hit his 3rd home run of the young season for the Sox (5-5), but they just couldn't overcome the 10-3 deficit, losing 10-8.

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Paul Konerko hits PH grand slam to power Sox past A's
Chicago - Paul Konerko's status for today's game was in question until the final lineup card was handed in. Manager Ozzie Guillen had penciled Omar Vizquel in his place, after the 1B complained of stiffness in his wrist after batting practice.
"I told Ozzie I was available if needed after the decision to rest me for the day had been made. It just so happened there was a situation where he decided to use me, and I made the best of it. I'm just glad we could get the win today," said Konerko.
The Sox (6-5) trailed much of the day entering the 7th inning down 5-4 before pouring on 7 runs, most of them coming from Konerko's grand slam. DH Adam Dunn was the only Sox regular to not reach base, striking out 3 times in 5 at-bats dropping his season average to .297.
"It good to score 11 run when our big bat is quiet. Paul came through when we needed him to, we'll take the win," said Guillen.
John Danks (1-1 5.87) pitched 5 innings allowing 3 ER in the no decision. Jesse Crain (2-1 8.10) worked a scoreless 8th before giving up a run in the 9th for the victory. The White Sox hope to claim a series victory over the A's (5-6) by sending Gavin Floyd to the mound against Trevor Cahill tomorrow.

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
New closer Thornton picks up his 5th save
Chicago - At times this season, Matt Thornton has been dominant. Other times, it's been a little interesting. Today, he was just good enough as the White Sox (7-5) beat the A's (5-7) by a final count of 7-6. Entering the final inning with a 7-5 lead, Thornton allowed Coco Crisp to reach base, who eventually scored on a Thornton wild pitch.
"I guess it's a good thing we had a 2-run lead. I can't shut them down every time, I'm glad we escaped with the win. Our guys battled hard all game," said Thornton
When asked if the closers role is a bit much to handle, he scoffed at that idea.
"That's a ridiculous question to ask. Every pitcher wants the ball, and they want it at the grandest stage. I'm built for this role. I'm the best option on this team for this role."
Ego aside, Thornton (5SV 2.70) has performed well in the short season, silencing any doubts about his promotion and contract extension.
DH Adam Dunn hit another home run to bring his season total to 4 and UTIL Mark Teahen hit his first while spelling Carlos Quentin in RF. The story of the team, however, continues to be rookie 3B Brent Morel. He is very quietly hitting .381 and has shown flashes of brilliance both at the plate and on the field.
The White Sox have tomorrow off before welcoming the Angels (5-7) to U.S. Cellular Field. Starting pitcher Jake Peavy and 1B/3B Dayan Viciedo are expected to rejoin the club when they head to Tampa Bay to face the Rays (5-7) in a 4 game set. Phil Humber (0-0 7.36) is expected to get sent down to Charlotte to make room for Peavy, but it'll be interesting to see what they do when Viciedo is cleared to play.

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Jerry Reinsdorf not satisfied with 7 championships
Chicago - Enjoying a nice day off, the White Sox owner and chairman of the board and Bulls owner, Jerry Reinsdorf decided to inspire his East leading Bulls by bringing down the Commissioner's Trophy received from the 2005 White Sox world series championship.
"I wanted to remind them, that this was the last time a team in our family had won a championship. With them on the verge of something great, I told them the story of that 2005 championship. No one picked them, they came together down the stretch and beat everyone by playing as a team, and with timely pitching. I don't know how pitching relates to basketball, but I'm sure they get the point," said Reinsdorf.
Reminded every game of the Bulls championship banners and all of Michael Jordan's accomplishments, seeing victory from a different angle was refreshing to one Bull.
"Being reminded that we're all here for one purpose, always gets us back to our original focus, going out and winning games," Bulls forward Carlos Boozer said. "While it may have been a different sport, coming together and playing as a team is a story that never gets told enough. It was very refreshing to get insight in that way, I love baseball."
"It would be very, very disappointing if neither of these two great teams won it all this year. They're both built well with stars and key role players. I hope we can win it for these great fans of Chicago," added Reinsdorf.
The Chicago Bulls are to face the 8th seeded Indiana Pacers in the first round of the playoffs, slated to begin next week.

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Sox win with 4 in 9th, Konerko with game winner
Chicago - Paul Konerko came up big again, down 5-4 with Juan Pierre and Alex Rios on 2nd and 3rd, he had one thought.
"I wanted to hit the ball into the outfield. Just get Juan home, give us a chance to win it in extras. The ball had other ideas and found some space, game over," He said.
Joel Pineiro (0-2 4.19) pitched 6 strong innings for the Angels (5-8), but the bullpen blew the lead, and he got the no decision. Lead off hitter Peter Bourjos had a great day for the Angels with 2 hits, a home run, double, stolen base, 2 runs scored and an RBI.
Chicago (8-5) continued their good offensive season by having all 9 players get on base. The come from behind win was met with other good news. The Minnesota Twins (9-5) lost allowing the White Sox to pull even with them in the loss column and now just sit .5GB.

Konerko's 5 RBIs not enough, Sox fall 10-8 in 10
Chicago - Late inning heroics are starting to become commonplace for Paul Konerko. Trailing 8-7 in the bottom of the 9th, the Sox slugger hit a home run, his second of the game, to equalize the score before the Sox (8-6) fell in the 10th.
Vernon Wells had two homers of his own in the game to go along with 7 RBI. Effectively chasing starter Mark Buerhle (2-1 5.92) in the 4th inning. Matt Thornton (0-1 5SV 3.24) picked up his first loss allowing the go ahead run in the 10th.

For those of you that are reading, first of all... thank you.
I do have a question, though. Are you enjoying the posts as they come game by game, or would you be more interested in them coming a series at a time like most dynasties? I personally know what I prefer, I'm just asking for your input!
Thanks in advance

Danks pitches CG as Sox win game, series
Chicago - The Chicago White Sox (9-6) finished their 10 game home stand today at 6-4. John Danks (2-1 4.07) had the second best outing of the season for a Chicago pitcher, completing the game and recording 12 strike outs against one run.
Angels (6-9) pitcher Dan Haren (1-3 5.47) allowed 5 ER over 6 innings leaving many to wonder when he will regain the All-Star form he showed in 3 of the last 4 seasons.
"Dan is battling out there, he has to pick his spots at this point. His velocity is there, the mechanics aren't the issue. He will right the ship soon," said Angel manager Mike Scioscia.
Haren, a talented pitcher earning $25M total over the next two seasons, is on his 4th Major League team in 9 years. He has previously pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals, Oakland Athletics and the Arizona Diamondbacks. He went 5-4 with a 2.87 ERA over 14 starts last year for the Angels.
DH Adam Dunn hit his 5th HR of the season as 5 Chicago batters knocked in runs. Up next for the Sox is an 11 game road trip, starting with 4 games against the Tampa Bay Rays (7-9). Starter Jake Peavy is expected to make his season debut in the second game of the series.

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
White Sox win 11-3, in 1st place AL Central
Tampa Bay - Gavin Floyd (2-0 2.70) was masterful against the Tampa Bay Rays (7-10) taking a shut out into the 9th inning for the 2nd straight time against them. In 8 and 1/3 innings, he gave up 1 ER and struck out 4.
"They have an excellent lineup, I can't pinpoint any one thing over these last two starts that have made me been able to shut them down. There's a lot of lineups in this league I would rather face every start, I've just been lucky," Floyd said.
White Sox middle reliever Sergio Santos (0-1 14.29) continues to struggle in the early going. In 8 games pitched, he has only worked 2 scoreless outings and never a perfect inning. General Manager Kenny Williams and Manager Ozzie Guillen were locked in Guillen's office after the game, with speculation it's about Santos' performance.
Paul Konerko and Adam Dunn each hit their 6 HRs of the season. All 9 Chicago regulars had a hit, with Gordon Beckham having 3 hits and 5 RBis.

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Sox activate Peavy off DL; Ship Humber, Viciedo to Charlotte
Tampa Bay - Jake Peavy completed his final rehab start 4 days ago and has rejoined the big club to start his 2011 season. Peavy will start tonight's game for the White Sox. When asked how the shoulder is, Peavy seemed non-committal in his answers.
"You know, uh, it's a day-by-day process. The last time I pitched, there was no swelling afterward and the soreness was gone in a few days. They told me they're going to monitor me over my first couple starts, then we'll go from there. Hopefully I don't have a setback," Peavy said.
Also ending his minor league rehab assignment was IF Dayan Viciedo. Instead of calling him up to the majors, the White Sox are instead opting for him to begin his season in Charlotte their AAA affiliate.
"Brent Morel has been great at third for us in the first half of the month, there's no reason to think Viciedo will provide an upgrade at this time," said GM Kenny Williams. "We're focused now on letting Dayan get his at-bats and those will come at Charlotte. His contract won't force our hand, our main focus is on winning games right now."
Joining Viciedo in Charlotte is SP Phil Humber (0-0 7.36). He lasted only 3 and 2/3 innings in his only start holding down the roster spot until Peavy was activated off the DL. He will get regular starts at Charlotte and rumors are swirling that he can replace Sergio Santos (0-1 14.29) if he continues to falter.

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Peavy shines in debut; Sox win 2-1
Tampa Bay - Jake Peavy (1-0 1.69) pitched a strong 5 and 1/3 innings. Netting 5 strikeouts and allowing just one run. He was lifted after reaching the 'magic' 90 pitch number the White Sox (11-6) coaching staff had set earlier. This is the Sox' second straight win over the Rays (7-11), 3rd straight overall and 6th in their last 7 games.
"I'm glad to get it out of the way. It felt good to get out to the mound and let a few fly. I'm going to have to send B.J. (Upton) a thank you card," joke Peavy. Upton was Peavy's first strikeout victim of the 2011 season, going down swinging. "The big thing was the win, Minnesota isn't losing much, and while we know you can't win a division in April, you sure can lose one."
Carlos Quentin started off the scoring with his 2nd HR of the season in the 2nd inning, followed by Alex Rios' RBI in the 5th inning, driving home rookie Brent Morel for the deciding run.
Sergio Santos, Will Ohman, Jesse Crain and Matt Thornton combined for 3 and 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to preserve the win for Peavy.

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
4 run 8th inning spells defeat for ChiSox
Tampa Bay - Manny Ramirez was all smiles after Wednesday's game. The former White Sox (11-7) outfielder put his new team ahead for good with a 2 run HR in the 8th inning. Tampa Bay (8-11) was able to go ahead after Manager Ozzie Guillen seemingly left starter Edwin Jackson (0-2 4.74) in too long, yet again.
Jackson pitched 7+ innings, but gave up the fateful HR to Ramirez in the 8th inning while the score was tied 4-4. DH Adam Dunn hit his 7th HR of the year, getting on base 3 times and driving home 2 runs in the losing effort.

Buehrle, Sox bounce back with 3-2 win
Tampa Bay - With the 3-2 win, the White Sox (12-7) have completed their 8 game season series against the Tampa Bay Rays (8-12) winning 5 and losing 3. Starter Mark Buerhle (3-1 5.06) pitching 7 and 2/3 inning, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits. White Sox rookie Brent Morel continued his hot month of April collecting 3 hits, including a home run and 2 RBI.
"It's funny to see him do so well. Looking at his swing, there's a large gaping hole that the ball just doesn't seem to find, yet," said Rays manager Joe Maddon. "I don't see him keeping up this pace."
When told about the opposing manager's comments, Morel seemed to shrug them off.
"The hole in my swing seemed to be the difference today. I'm glad it's there," he said, smiling.
The Sox now catch a flight out to Detroit for 3 games, before ending the road trip in New York. The Tigers (6-13) will send staff ace, Justin Verlander, to the mound against John Danks in the first game of the series.

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Andre Ethier to the South Side?
Chicago - According to an unnamed source within the White Sox organization, Dodger GM Ned Colletti and Sox GM Kenny Williams have been exchanging phone calls all week surrounding the Dodger OF Andre Ethier.
"If it's going to happen, it's going to happen soon. I could see Ethier with the White Sox before they arrive in New York to face the Yankees this weekend."
Declining to further comment on the details, the source claimed that owner Jerry Reinsdorf has given the green light to add "10 million more in payroll."
This should come as great news to GM Kenny Williams regardless of the outcome of the potential Ethier deal, as he figured to be strapped financially for the rest of the season and limited on what he can do with an aging roster.
Carlos Quentin is reportedly the major leaguer to be sent to the dodgers, with a pitching prospect. Quentin is a power hitter, but as the Dodgers' owners are locked in a messy divorce and the finances are in limbo, he should prove to be much cheaper to sign than Ethier.
Ethier is batting .313 with 4 HR and 13 RBI for the Dodgers (12-9) this season.

Dunn's HR, 3 RBIs lead Sox past Tigers
Detroit - Adam Dunn is settling into his new role nicely. The DH has 8 HRs, 16 RBI and an OPS over 1.100. John Danks (3-1 3.45) pitched well for 7 innings, allowing only 2 ER. Number 5 hitter Carlos Quentin struggled again at the plate in the midst of trade rumors.
"I didn't know I could be shopped around like that. It's very disheartening. 3 seasons ago I was an MVP candidate for this team, I hope the rumors aren't true," said the right fielder.
The White Sox (13-7) are on a roll as of late, winning 5 of their last 6 games.

Sox in cruise control as Floyd picks up 3rd win
Detroit - With a final score of 8-1, starter Gavin Floyd picked up his 3rd win on the season. The White Sox (14-7) have won 4 out of the 5 games he's started overall. Floyd (3-0 2.41) pitched masterfully for 7 innings again, allowing only 1 ER.
The Tigers (6-15) got off to a good start with Miguel Cabrera driving home a run in the 1st inning, but couldn't get on the board after that. They are hitting .256 with 15 HR and a team ERA of 5.92 on the young season.
DH Adam Dunn hit his 9th HR of the season, adding 3 more RBI.
"I've adjusted to the whole DH thing at lot fast than I thought I would," said Dunn. "Not having to field has actually left me pretty fresh in the late innings. I'm not saying I prefer it, but it's not bad."

Re: 2011 Chicago White Sox: Playing for keeps and a city.
Sox trade for Andre Ethier; send Quentin, RP Infante to Dodgers
Chicago - Working in the late hours of the night, GM Kenny Williams decided that even though his team was 14-7 and just .5GB of the division-leading Twins, that it was time to make a move. He agreed to send Carlos Quentin and Gregory Infante to the Dodgers in exchange for RF Andre Ethier.
"Jerry loosened the restrictions on the payroll a little bit. I told him I didn't want to this deal without being able to sign Ethier to an extension, he told me to go for it," said Williams. "It kind of worked out great, for us to get off to such a hot start, and the Dodgers really needing to unload payroll while still being competitive. Ethier is a great talent, we're glad to have him."
Ethier signed a 5 year, 47 million dollar deal with the Sox this morning. The 29 year-old had this to say.
"I was blessed to be able to play for 6 years in one spot, Los Angeles, but Mr. Williams told me he really needed me here. The team wanted me here, and they were willing to prove it. Job security like this doesn't happen often, I feel blessed."
Former Sox OF Quentin was unavailable for comment, but his locker had already been cleared out by the time reporters arrived this morning. RP prospect Infante projects as a setup man in the very near future, and could be used to shore up the Dodgers bullpen right away.

Sox win 5-4 behind two in 9th; sweep lowly Tigers
Detroit - The White Sox (15-7) completed their first series sweep of the season and with that retook the AL Central lead. The White Sox scored two runs off Tigers (6-16) closer Jose Valverde (0-1 6SV 7.04) scoring first off an Andre Ethier double and then the game-winner by Alexei Ramirez one batter later.
"It feels great to play such a key role in my first game with this club. I really like the guys and the atmosphere. I'm excited for the future of this team," said Ethier.
With 6 games left in the month of April, the White Sox have the chance to put up the best start in team history, topping the 19-9 mark set in 1994. Up next for the Sox is a 4 game road trip against the New York Yankees (14-7). Edwin Jackson will face off against A.J. Burnett.

Good trade, Quentin is made of glass or something and Ethier is much more reliable bat in the lineup. I'm excited to see how the team performs now with him.
