WPA also has issues with being reliant on fielding (e.g. a groundball single takes away as much WPA as a LD single). Both the Angels and Red Sox were in the top three fielding teams according to FanGraphs while the Mariners were not so. That's why I generally, you know, try to look at stats that are closer to being under a pitcher's control.

See, I don't buy that a pitcher is 100% at the mercy of his fielders. That sir is bulls***. That's why I add the two WAR numbers together, and where it's close I use WPA. Come up with your own "Felix friendly" method if you don't like it. ;)

Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
Not to mention that a pitcher having one or two great or horrible games can throw the whole thing off.

I never said that they were 100% at the mercy of their fielders-that's why you look at batted ball stats and BABIP, things like that. But since pitchers are never going to strike out all the batters they face, they're still going to be heavily dependent on their fielders. Unfortunately, that's going to hurt stats like WPA and ERA since we may never have a way to track the how much soft and hard contact a pitcher gives up.

The Twins lost 99 games this year. Looking at this Top 10, it's pretty clear what they were lacking. ;) :p :D
Great list! You could just tell that Ron Gardenhire managed every game with a broken heart this year. He wasn't the same. Brian Dinklewho, Matt Whobert, and Whoyoshi Nishiwhoka just weren't the same as his favorite player of all-time.

Holy Riverboat Gamblers Batman! Joe Maddon is going with...
...Wait for it...
...A bit more...
Matt Moore (1-0, 2.89) in Game 1 of the ALDS. F***ing cahones man!!! I love watching this team, even though they're going to be a major impediment to my Jays in the coming years. Joe Maddon rules. A lot of managers would've gone with a safer (read: veteran) choice like Jeff Niemann. Not Joe. This is gonna be a really interesting series, especially if the Rays can eek out a win against C.J. Wilson in Game 1.

Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
So upset that Francona is gone. I understand a lot of it was his own feelings and being fed up with things, but the fact that there was so much blame being placed on him is ridiculous. Is he partially to blame? Yes, but so is Theo, and every player who stepped on the field over the past month.
So long, Francona. Thanks for the memories and championships, you'll undoubtedly go down as the most successful manager in Red Sox history, or at least in the past 80-90 years, and once the dust settles you'll be loved and missed, just as you should be.
-
Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
The latest on Francona from MLBTR said that Theo told management that Francona wasn't working out six weeks ago because of a "lack of urgency," and Francona was voted out 3-0 a few weeks later.
Nothing is ever a truly "mutual decision" so at least that myth can end. So far almost every team has a fan on the thread hoping their team either signs Francona for 2012 or fires their manager to sign him.

I would love for the Tigers to make a great run so that Leyland says to himself, yeah, I've accomplished enough, time to retire, so then they could replace him with Tito.
Doesn't really look like there's gonna be a whole lot of manager openings this offseason though.

Take it easy on AOW dude. Save your wrath for the douchey, bandwagon jumping, Red Sox fans. AOW was rooting for them long before it became cool to root for them, long before some fans only went to the game to sing "Sweet Caroline" and long before there were seats atop the goddamn Green Monster. That is a great twitter feed though. :)

No. Plus AOW and myself always grief each other, NBD.

Baseball really needs to cut their games in the regular season down about 20-30 to avoid the Fall Weather and to be the only sport going on instead of trying to compete with College Football and the NFL.
But no, because they act like they get it when they don't.

Yeah. That one inning of AL Cy Young contenders battling it out in the playoffs was EPIC!

I hope for more when we have a Colorado Minnesota World Series. Maybe baseball will then get their **** together.

What "fall weather"? I'm guessing the rain delay prompted this post...

No actually. Think about it, if this is the weather we have now, imagine what its going to be like when the World Series is played. But hey if 40 degree baseball is your guy's thing, more power to ya.

Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
I've felt this way since the World Series started being played in November, it's just stupid to me and I can't see how anyone can defend that.

I'm sure they won't mind losing the 20-30 games worth of revenue per team.

Probably gained back in television revenue for being the only major sport in the playoffs on TV.
Also supply and demand, there is too much supply with 162 games, heck earlier this year there were 300 fans at a Marlins game. Condense the season, cut down the supply and the demand may actually go together.
I know it wont happen. I just feel baseball just keeps cutting it's own wrists and is becoming less relevant every year.

And if it was played a month ago, it would've been 15 degrees warmer with a lot more rain.
Besides, the temperature is highly dependent on WHERE the World Series is played. The rain part of it...there's nothing they can do about that at all.
Also, I don't want less baseball.

Imagine how swell a Colorado, Minnesota WS would be.
20 games less during the regular season just doesn't matter. Baseball records are sort of irrelevent now and sabr guys pretty much discounted a lot of the stats that did have meaning once upon a time. Like Wins, Hits and the like.
