Probably something to do with the reason why he exploded over some text message.

Not to start mixing sports here, but as a Bills and Sabres fan (closer media-wise than to my Jays), it is blatantly obvious what happens when teams are run on the cheap. The Sabres now have an owner who has a ton of money and is willing to spend it, and now they're a favorite. The Bills seem to have caught lightning in a bottle the first few weeks, but the last decade has shown what happens when an owner is simply not willing to spend the money it takes to be a contender.
Those teams are ran incompetently because competent people to run those teams don't come cheap, and if you do find a diamond in the rough, one of the big spenders will snatch him away in a heartbeat.
...And this folks is lesson #1 in how you get around the goddamn salary cap in basketball, football and hockey. There is no salary cap on your scouting and player development budgets. Spend whatever you need to, to hire the best. It is the Detroit Red Wings Way, and last I checked they have been phenomenally successful over the last 20 years.

So not only does HGM believe that money has no bearing on how a baseball team does, but that we should always give players the benefit of doubt and never question their motives.
FWIW, I didn't say anything about Ells before because I thought Dwayne Murphy took over as Bostons hitting coach. :p

Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
I find it funny that some people want to count Ellsbury out of the MVP discussion if Boston fails to make the playoffs (not on here, I've seen it elsewhere, just sharing).
Boston is 6-18 in September.
But their CFer is hitting .368/.409/.679 in those 24 games with 7 home runs and 19 RBI's and has a 1.9 fWAR.
OFF WITH HIS HEAD!
The Red Sox losing 18 of 24 this month is not on Ellsbury's hands and if anything, further proves that an individual should not be removed from the MVP discussion simply because his team can't win enough games.

So will Boston blow the WC spot in the regular season, or will they blow it by losing a 1-game playoff?

Or, they might just pull it off somehow in the one-game playoff, but get destroyed in the ALDS by Texas.

Lee fails to strike out 16 batters tonight to wrest the K title from Kershaw.
Looks like Clayton will win the pitching triple crown, enhancing his Cy candidacy.
I'd still vote Halladay but will the voters be swayed?

Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
The Red Sox are really making an art out of this late season collapse thing. Ellsbury had a Mays catch for the record books but fell and dropped it, and now Salty got hit in the chest and is out. And, of course, to add insult to injury, they lost to the Orioles.
When did AGonz forget how to hit? He just fell off the planet this month.

I don't think AOW has seen a baseball game in months.

When's the last time a team had the MVP and Cy Young and failed the reach the post season? Really want to know that. Think I'll google it.
-
Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
That was easy.

Well, I did the research and found that MVP and Cy Young Award winners have been on the same team in the same year 20 times and 19 out of those 20 teams made the post-season. And wouldn’t you f’ing know it, the one team that bucked the odds and didn’t make the post-season were the 1962 Dodgers when Maury Wills won the MVP and Don Drysdale won the Cy Young. So I guess there is precedence for this kind of dubious honor in Los Angeles.

Congrats to the Maddon and the Rays players for catching the Red Sox with 2 to go. Sure, it took a near full-team collapse from the Red Sox, but that doesn't diminish the accomplishment.

Absolutely it doesn't. As shitty as the Red Sox have been in September, the Rays have been outstanding. Kudos.

They've been good. If they had been outstanding, they would've ran away with it.

I simply enjoy the fact that bosux fans are now forced to cheer for the yanks
-
Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
No we aren't. Most Sox fans would rather see the Yanks lose, than sneak into the playoffs by rooting for them to win.
Plus, if we got into the playoffs right now, what hope would we have? Our aces are getting smoked and we're losing to the Orioles. That's not exactly a hopeful equation for the playoffs.

until the rays are ahead, i can't root for the yanks. the way i have seen it...its in the Red Sox hands. if they win they're in. until that equation is gone, i can't root for pinstripes. unfortunately, it may be coming to that...i'll have to force myself to vomit after the games and shower twice a day if it does.
oh...and anything can happen in the playoffs.

Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
Rays went 15-9 in September for .625 winning %. It's obviously a strong month but not the all-timer of a winning month you'd expect for a team like that chasing a playoff spot. In contrast, the Twins ran down the Tigers in 09 by finishing the season 17-4.

Yep. If the Red Sox just played .500 for the month, there never would have been a race. This was a Red Sox collapse, not a Rays surge.
-
Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
The Rays have also managed to have a positive run differential in every month of the season so far. That's pretty amazing when you consider the fact that they're anything but an offensive juggernaut. 1st in the AL in run prevention helps that out I guess, but you would think that in one of the months this year they would've been outscored. Joe Maddon is the no brainer Manager of the Year.

Yeah, the Rays are what, like 33-20 since July 31?
That's solid and everything, but the Red Sox did collapse

So, I think the whole "trade players for a manager" thing is pretty daft.

Cant depend on Baltimore for anything. Yes lets pitch to Ellsbury with a base open Hurr Derpee Doo.

Just remember guys, if Boston doesn't do better than Tampa today and tomorrow, Ellsbury loses all his value and can no longer be MVP.

exaggerating slightly? voters will vote for players from teams that were in contention, they don't have to win it all. what they won't vote for is players like AROD who dominated on a last place team.
