This is getting fun, gotta win tomorrow, and then we are one back with 6 games to go
Cards play Cubs (H) and Astros (A)
Braves play Nationals and Phillies
I like our chances if we can win tomorrow.

Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
There's always good and bad in this f***ing game.
The Good: Dustin McGowan: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, 1 HR, 79 pitches, 50 strikes. Welcome back Dusty.
The Bad: Brett Lawrie breaks the middle finger on his throwing hand during infield practice and is shelved for the remainder of the season.
The Ugly: None of this matters because the f***ing Toronto Maple Leafs are back to claim their typical 97% share of the sports highlights, talk shows, and discussion in this market. FML.

Even if the Cards don't make the playoffs, I'm just happy that Sept ended up mattering, because on Sept 2nd it looked like Sept was going to be boring. It's just fun to be scoreboard watching and cheering on two of my teams (Rays and Cards)

In 1975 Don Sutton (BB-Ref Game Logs page
here), managed to go 189.1 IP without having a double play turned behind him, but he wound up with 3 GDP on the season. The streak started when he got Johnny Bench to end the 1st inning with a DP on April 15th, and didn't end until he got Larvell Blanks to end the game with a DP on August 5th. So April 15th CG with a 1st inning DP = 8 innings + 23 straight starts totalling 173.0 IP + DP to end a game in the ninth, which came after 8.1 IP = 189.1 IP.
Fergie Jenkins 182.1 IP streak stretched over the
1970 and
1971 seasons. On July 21, 1970, after getting Gil Garrido to hit into a double play to give him 2 outs in the 7th, Jenkins completed the game = 2.1 IP. Over his final 17 G and 16 GS of 1970, totalling 136.2 IP the streak continued, and it continued further over his first five starts and 39.0 IP in 1971. Finally in his sixth start on May 1st, 1971 against the Phillies, he got Willie Montanez to hit into a double play to end the 5th. This time he only went 1.0 IP before getting another double play, as he got Denny Doyle to give him the first 2 outs of the 7th. The totals: 2.1 IP + 136.2 IP + 39.0 IP + 4.1 IP = 182.1 IP.
The last time Morrow got a GDP was August 28, 2010 when he got Miguel Cabrera to hit into one to give him two outs in the sixth inning. He then struck out Brennan Boesch and was replaced by Jason Frasor in the 7th inning, so that's 0.1 IP without a GDP. His next start was on September 3rd against the Yankees and he only lasted 3.0 IP. After that, the Jays decided he'd reached his innings limit and decided to shut him down for the year. He has 166.1 IP so far this year, so that's 0.1 IP + 3.0 IP + 166.1 IP = 169.2 IP. Go Brandon! We're rooting for ya!
Thanks for straightening that out. I heard it on radio show & I just checked full seasons without a GDP. Hopefully he gets it.:p

Actually there's another one. I heard somewhere yesterday that the third longest such streak belonged to Charlie Leibrandt, so I checked it out and sure enough it does. He went nearly a full calendar year without a GDP. On July 28, 1991, he got Luis Salazar of the Cubs to hit into a double play. He didn't get another one until July 4, 1992 when he got Andre Dawson (also of the Cubs) to hit into a double play. In between the two he went 178.2 IP without a ground ball double play. So we have:
1. Don Sutton: 189.1 IP
2. Fergie Jenkins: 182.1 IP
3. Charlie Leibrandt: 178.2 IP
4. Brandon Morrow: 169.2 IP
Something that might prevent Mr. Morrow from fulfilling his destiny is the fact that he's just added a cutter that has produced a few more ground balls in his last two starts. *Fingers Crossed*

He's one of my favorite players, so I hope he masters that cutter. I always pick him up in fantasy, but he blows up like every 5th start and destroys my ERA!

If you're gonna sign Brandon Morrow for your fantasy team, make sure you're in a league that uses FIP or xFIP rather than ERA. ;)

Saw this interesting juxtaposition in the comments section of an SB Nation post on the subject and had to share. Bit of a resemblance don't you think. I think we've figured out the demographic the Marlins are shooting for with this logo:

Overall I like it, but the huge maple boner inducing Canadian maple leaf kind of makes me want to wretch. The maple leaf in the old one didn't take up as much of the bird's head and didn't feel as in your face as this one does. I like the fact that the bird looks aggressive because blue jays are aggressive birds. It's also a tip of the cap to the latest logo, which I don't mind, except for the fact that the word "blue" seemingly got completely removed from Blue Jays. Still, it is definitely a step in the right direction after years of wandering aimlessly in the Desert of S***tacular Logos. I wouldn't want them to go all the way back to the original, and that's why I like the aggressive nature of the bird as opposed to the placid bird in the original logo. I understand they're trying to re-capture the time when we were "Canada's team" and it's certainly doable with the Northwest League Champion Vancouver Canadians in the fold, but I don't need a big, fat maple leaf to tell me that this is the only MLB team located in Canada. I know that. Maybe I'm just a curmudgeonly prick. Get the f*** off my lawn you over the top patriotic douchebags. /rant ;) :p :D

I really really like that proposed Jays logo, but I'd like to see a ball or bat or glove on it somewhere. It's not a deal breaker, but it looks kinda bare without it.

Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
I personally like it, looks clean. The original Jays uniforms and the ones during Rockets time there are my personal favs.

There are mutterings around the interwebs that there will be a ball in the background like there was with the original one. It'd be nice to see it all at once, but we'll know for sure what it will be soon enough.

I'd also like to see the return of the middle jersey in this image as an alternate jersey. It doesn't need to have the same font for the letters and numbers, but the royal blue was a pretty cool alternate jersey that was only around for the final three years of the original logo's run. The stirrups are kind of outdated and should probably never make a comeback.

Matt Moore. Looked pretty awesome yesterday. 5 innings, 1 walk, 11 K's. Against some true Yankees and some other guys in Yankee uniforms.

we get to hear David Ortiz say The F Word (i.e., “****”), one of my personal favorite pasttimes and something Ortiz is actually quite experienced with. Observe:
August 2009, on not receiving an RBI on what he thought was a base hit: “****ing scorekeeper keeps ****ing **** up.”
April 2010, on what he thought of sportswriters making claims on small sample sizes, including bonus non-**** swears: “You guys wait ’til **** happens, then you can talk ****. Two ****ing games, and already you ****ers are going crazy. What’s up with that, man? ****. ****ing 160 games left. That’s a ***** (note: unsure which expletive actually goes here). One of you ****ers got to go ahead and hit for me.”
June 2011, on Joe Girardi’s disdain for bat flips: “**** that ****.”
Monday, on losing the first half of a doubleheader to the Baltimore Orioles: “**** this ****.”
Tuesday, on Curt Schilling: “**** off.”
August 2011, on leaving 16 men on base: “****.”

Finally a double play behind Brandon Morrow to end the fifth inning. One out in the fifth inning = 4.1 IP + 169.2 IP = 174.0 IP. So he has the fourth longest such streak that we know about, and won't set the record. He looked pretty happy about it, although that could also be the 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7K with 80 pitches so far to go with a 5-0 lead against the Rays who are fighting for their playoff lives.

Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
We have the potential still that up to 11 teams could win 90 games.
Angels would not be allowed to lose again
St. Louis and Tampa Bay can only lose once more
Atlanta has to win one more
Most years, we only have about 6-8 teams win 90 games. Would be cool if we could see 11, but St. Louis, Tampa, and Los Angeles are all long shots

Still a chance that 11 teams could lose 90 games as well.
90+ losses: Baltimore, Minnesota, Seattle, and Houston
89 losses: Kansas City, and San Diego
88 losses: Chicago (NL)
87 losses: Oakland, Florida, Pittsburgh, and Colorado
The Yankees and the Phillies still have a shot at 100 wins, while Houston already has 100 losses, and Minnesota could end up there as well.

Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
If the season ended today and going back to 2001, here are the list of teams that made the postseason...
AL
New York Yankees - 10
Boston Red Sox - 7
Minnesota Twins - 6
Los Angeles Angels - 6
Oakland - 4
Texas, Detroit, Tampa, Chicago, Cleveland - 2
Seattle - 1
NL
Atlanta - 7
St. Louis - 6
Philadelphia - 5
Arizona - 4
San Francisco, Chicago, Houston - 3
Colorado, Milwaukee, San Diego - 2
New York, Florida, Cincy - 1
What this tells me is baseball is extremely top heavy with a few anomalies along the way. Also you can pretty much count on specific teams that will never make the postseason and if they do, would just be an anomaly.
