Catch of the year?

The ninja assassin GM strikes again: 2B Aaron Hill and SS John McDonald to Arizona Diamondbacks in return for 2B Kelly Johnson. Jays either sign Johnson or let him go at the end of the year and take the pick. Standard AA MO. Nothing to see here. Move along. Yes!!!
Wow, AA traded for a mediocre 2B that's about to be a free agent. Big ****ing deal.
Wouldn't they have gotten a type B pick for Hill anyway? I mean this saves....what...$100k total for the Jays?
Unless AA just loves Kelly Johnson and wants to sign the one-great-year 2B who isn't as good defensively as Aaron Hill? That's a head scratcher of a lateral move, for a non-contender.

I'm not sure what Anthopoulos gets out of the swap. Maybe he thinks Johnson will be a Type A and will decline arbitration, or maybe he's just more inclined to offer arbitration to Johnson than Hill. Or, maybe he hopes to extend Johnson cheaply. Hill has about $990K remaining on his contract. McDonald, a defensive whiz, has about $300K remaining, so the money is pretty close.
Rockies trade for Kevin Kouzmanoff and claim Wandy off waivers. If they can get Wandy for relatively cheap I like both deals. Kouz is a good defender that may have a good bat when he comes into a hitters park and if not, screw it, they gave up cash/PTBNL.
I hope they get Wandy for relatively cheap, I like Wandy and we'll see if the rise in HR% and drop in K/9 is an indication of the future but if not, he can provide some good value in Colorado.
Renck tweets he expects Houston to ask for a significant piece in return for Wandy. He names Friedrich, Rosario, Gomez.
I'd be comfortable letting Friedrich or Gomez go, they aren't in positions of immediate need. But unless the Rockies instead intend to invest in Pacheco the system is dry of catchers and Rosario is pretty valuable. I would not want Wilin going in this deal

Let's assume the options won't be picked up for Hill.
If you are Hill or KJ, would you accept arb from the Jays?
Can't wait to see Skip Schumaker pitch to Aaron Miles.
Riveting tv here in St. Louis guys
****. He is throwing 93!
And he threw a change-up
Aaron Miles knows how to face a position player!
Put it this way, if I were AA, I'd feel much more comfortable making an arbitration offer to Johnson than I would to Hill. In fact I probably would not offer Hill arbitration at all, and thus forfeit the pick. That's why I like this trade so much. If it turns out as well as it possibly can, the Jays have plugged the hole at 2B for the foreseeable future (assuming AA offers KJ a three or so year extension). If it goes poorly, they either get a year of KJ or one sandwich pick, and maybe a first round pick (latest reverse engineered Elias rankings have KJ at the top of the Type B 2B/3B/SS in both the AL and the NL, so it's possible he could be a Type A depending on how the next five weeks go). All of this for one non-Comp FA and one Type B (it's a bloody miracle that Hill's still a Type B) who AA most likely would've declined both options on, and refused to offer arbitration to. There is no downside to this deal for the Jays, and Johnny Mac gets to go somewhere where he's an upgrade on the current regular SS (Willie f***ing Bloomquist) and gets a shot at making a meaningful contribution on a contending team, and I love me some Johnny Mac, so I'm really happy for him. Sad to see him go for now, but I think The Prime Minister of Defense will be back here next year, so let him go take his best shot in the desert.
I don't recall ever seeing a position player face a relief pitcher that way before.
Lol
Anyone see the double play he got to get his 37th save?
Second and third, one out, one run ball game, ball hit to center, middle depth, and Jackson guns the guy tagging up on a http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=18296893 purrfect throw
But honestly AJ, I might have been wrong to say he has been bad in save situations
http://www.baseball-reference.com/pl...co_extra::none
17 walks, 18 hits, and 37 k's in about 37ish innings isn't bad at all.
.143/.255/.214.
I admit I was wrong to say my last line in that earlier post.
.469 OOPS in save situations vs .878 OOPS in non-save situations. Sheesh
But overall, the point still remains. Worst performance overall by a pitcher with 37 straight saves.
Just for fun
Valverde season thus far (prior to stats for save 37)
2-4, 8.45 K/9, 4.464 BB/9, 54.1 IP, 36 saves, .252 babip, 79.5 LOB%, 2.65 ERA, 3.75 FIP, 4.08 xFIP, 0.5 WAR
Brad Lidge 2008:
2-0, 41 saves, 11.94 K/9, 4.54 BB/9, 69.1 IP, .296 BABIP, 82.9 LOB%, 1.95 ERA, 2.41 FIP, 3.01 xFIP, 2.2 WAR
Eric Gagne 2003:
2-3, 55 saves, 14.98 K/9, 2.19 BB/9, 82.1 IP, .243 BABIP, 83.9 LOB%, 1.20 ERA, 0.86 FIP, 1.18 xFIP, 4.5 WAR
We were talking about save situations. I counted 2 runs in 37 ip. That is around 0.49 in save situations.
Right now, if the Rockies pull some kind of miracle off, rage has to eat dog poop.
It seems to me that the whole "I get amped up for save situations so that's why I suck in the non-save situations" is just something that happens to closers right before they expire. Valverde's never had a problem with non-save situations before this year. He's obviously superb in those save situations generally (.143/.255/.214/.469 line), but it's entirely BABIP driven right now, and his peripherals are in a steady decline, especially the K-rate.
To suggest he's "not that good" right now is silly, even if he had blown a save or two he's obviously having a strong season. I do not have much confidence that his 2012 will go as well, though. There are some red flags.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to say he sucks.
Just that he has possibly the worst season that has produced 37 saves in a row, that's why I compared him to Lidge and Gagne.
And it really was stemmed from people calling in saying he is like the MVP of the season and stuff.
Also, I see your link and raise you a http://www.baseball-reference.com/pl...co_extra::none
Because I already linked it ;)
So Nathan just go back. And brought me a **** ton base broken baseball bats
Christopher Hawkins
Jorge Bonifacio etc.
Just awesome
Wow Rays game ended like that?
Apparently Mike Flanagan killed himself, and the reason had to do with depression based on how Oriole fans viewed his role in their lack of success. It appears that he was an avid reader of fan forums and blogs. If that's true, I can understand how reading some of the stupid crap that "fans" post would make a player/ GM depressed.
Hopefully this makes people think more about how they voice their displeasure about a team's failures, but I doubt it.
That would be a very crazy reason
god some Cards fans are stupid.
Because Furcal tripped at Wrigley, it means the stadium is a dump.
Are you serious?
Because Garcia had a bad start tonight, and has his fair share of bad starts, his new contract now compares to Kyle Lohse.
umm, no, no where close.
And since I don't work in professional baseball, apparently I'm not allowed to criticize the managing of TLR a hall of fame manager lol
Here is what Nathan brought back :)
