Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
Not that I was rooting for the Twins before (especially since they're not my favorite team), but at this point, I'm rooting for them to lose just to see how they can outdo themselves. Last night was incredible. It's like the equivalent of an AI-created expansion team's bullpen, full of 47/72 rated 17 and 18 year olds.

Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
Frank Francisco fail.
Also hilarious, right before Konerko tied it, Dunn was up with Ramirez on second, one out, and Hawk Harrelson says "C'mon Adam, short and quick." Adam Dunn? Short and quick? Have you ever watched Adam Dunn before?

Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
Take Frank Francisco out behind the Rogers Centre and ****ing shoot him.
And I do realize that hometown announcers tend to be homers, but man, Hawk Harrelson is annoying. He's the worst as far as openly rooting for the team to win.

Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
Omar Vizquel is a better first baseman after one inning than Edwin Encarnacion is after a Spring Training and 10 or so regular season games.

The fact of the matter is, there is no other guy on the roster with (when he's on, and it's quite clear he's struggling due to the late start to his season, as a result of the injury) closer type stuff. The only option is to go with a committee style bullpen, and stick 2Frank in some lower leverage situations, until his fastball becomes a plus pitch for him again. Right now it's a big, fat juicy pitch and does nothing to set up his split finger, which is his out pitch, but given that he throws his fastball about 70% of the time, it has to be mid-90's with life on it, or he becomes a very ordinary pitcher. His curveball isn't very good and I think he just uses it as his offspeed pitch to keep the hitters off the other two pitches. If he can get that fastball back, and I believe he will (the velocity's still there, but it's just flat right now), I believe he can start pitching like a closer should. He will never be a lockdown closer, but the stuff is there for him to be the best option on this staff. It just isn't translating right now. Maybe Jason Frasor's better, but if I were one of the defenders behind him, I would request anyone but him, given how slllooow he is in between pitches.
Back to the drawing board Farrell, and could you please stop doing your best Buck Showalter/Tony LaRussa impersonation with the ticky tack matchup game? It doesn't matter what side of the plate the hitters swing from against Villanueva (when/if he returns to the bullpen), Frasor, Francisco, Rauch, and Janssen, so give them a longer leash. Be very careful with Rzepczynski (LOOGY type matchup), Camp (ROOGY type matchup) and Dotel (ROOGY type matchup) though. Those are the guys you must try to gain a platoon split advantage with. You've already figured out Dotel. Today was beautiful: 4 batters: 3 RH, and 44 year old switch hitting Omar Vizquel. It's good to see that you've learned the lesson on that one. In fact had it not been for Jose "Iron (Clank!) Glove" Molina, Dotel would probably have pitched a scoreless 8th today. Good job. Also a decent job with Camp. Three of the four hitters he faced were RH, and same with Rzepczynski facing Dunn (L), Konerko (R), Pierzynski (L).
In the overall, it was a brilliant job of managing the bullpen today (9 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K), and by pitching Perez for 3.2 innings (32 of 38 pitches for strikes!) today, Janssen and Rauch were saved for tomorrow's game with Romero on the mound. Ricky's averaged 6.5 innings per start, so it's not unreasonable to hope you can get away with just Janssen and Rauch, which would be very good with Cleveland (best team in the majors right now) coming in on Monday.
And yeah, Hawk is the worst announcer in the history of anything ever.
Oh, and how about Corey Patterson for DH for a little while? 5 for 7...Sweet. (SSS) Thames could get some time in LF (Buh-rutal throw over everybody today - hit the cutoff man Eric! - Geez) in the meantime, which is good.

Villanueva had a bad combination going today. His typical diet of offspeed stuff, along with his fastball which at best averages 90 mph, was up in the zone and catching too much of the plate way too often. He typically mixes his pitches very well, and so far this year, all four of them have been very good pitches for him. I'd like to see him get another shot, and keep Perez as a second lefty option who can go long for you in a pinch like today's game.

Blue Jays third basemen are in the midst of an 0-for-44 slump while Brett Lawrie went 4-for-6 with 2 homers and a double in Triple-A tonight. He's batting .350 with 14 homers and 44 RBI on the year.
I'm jumping the fence. Its time to call the kid up.
And DFA Encarnacion or Nix (or both) while you're at it. McCoy's a much more useful player on the bench.

I agree, but what's the date on the arby extension ... is it June 1, or July 1 that they can call him up and keep the year? If it's June 1, I can wait a weekend. If it's July 1, call him up now. DFA Nix, keep E5 around to pinch hit or fill in at first (he's a terrible 1B, but he's a war crime at third). And BTW, what's Hechevarria's ETA? You know a lot more about this than I do.

It's unknown and unknowable because it doesn't come into effect until after he has at least two years of service time (currently after 2013 at the earliest). The top 17% of players in service time, with at least 2 years of service time, are made arbitration eligible as super-2 players. There's also the fact that this CBA expires in December of this year and the word is that the union and MLB want to make it either 2 years or 3 years to put a stop to these super-2 shenanigans.
Consider this though: the Padres have yet to call up 1B Anthony Rizzo, despite the fact that he's a 21 year old hitting even better than Lawrie in the same league (2nd in OPS in PCL; Lawrie is 10th). This despite the fact that the team is 30th in the majors in R/G, and their MLB 1B are hitting a combined .216/.260/.353/.613 with 6 HR and 22 RBI.
The Jays are 8th in MLB in R/G and yes, their 3B are absolutely s***tacular with a .166/.221/.259/.480 line and 3 HR and 15 RBI (Encarnacion's HR today came as a DH), but it's not completely killing the team thanks to the best hitter in baseball going ballistic. Remember to that Rizzo's been playing 1B forever (was drafted as one anyway and has been playing 1B since turning pro in 2007 at age 17). Lawrie just started learning 3B this year. Unfortunately, he may still have some learning to do on the defensive side. It looks like the bat's ready though.
As much as we would like to see the end of at least Nix (now 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs today), I'm quite sure that Padres fans can't wait to see Brad freakin' Hawpe DFA'd or sent to the bench in favour of Anthony Rizzo. We are not alone guys. He'll be ready when he's ready and I believe this brain trust puts far more stock in scouting every facet of a prospect's game rather than the fact that AAA pitchers just can't get him out right now. No matter how much he rakes, he'll be here when they deem him ready and not before.

Re: * * Official 2011 MLB Discussion Thread * *
Kobie: Hechavarria's ETA is entirely dependent on his bat, which right now is icky: .232/.258/.364/.622 . The glove, according to his manager Sal Fasano, is MLB ready now, but as you can see the bat has stalled out at AA so far.
Development is more important than wins in the minor leagues, but winning sure beats losing for the players that are down there, and right now the four teams in the leagues that are playing are kicking ass:
Las Vegas: 31 W 19 L; .620; 2nd place in PCL Pacific - South 0.5 GB
New Hampshire: 32 W 16 L; .667; 1st place in EL Eastern 3 Games ahead of Trenton
Dunedin: 27 W 23 L; .540; 3rd place in FSL North 11 GB
Lansing: 28 W 19 L; .596; 1st place in MWL Eastern 2.5 Games ahead of Dayton, Great Lakes, and Bowling Green
All four teams: 118 W 77 L; .605
Gone are the days under JPR when the minor league system was OK, but nothing special. Good times are coming my fellow Jays fans. Good times are coming. :) :D

I wonder if this is the price that the Baseball Gods are demanding for Jo-Jo Reyes snapping his ugly streak against the best team in the American League (right now) last night. As Brandon Morrow tweeted last night prior to Jo-Jo's historic ;) win: "Anybody got a goat? A chicken will do in a pinch." Almighty Jobu, please accept our humble sacrifice.

Not a lot to get excited about this season with the Nationals....unless you count our second baseman Danny Espinosa! 24 y/o rookie who is making a case for ROY!
Danny's stats.

So, two thoughts as I'm watching sportscenter today.
Curt Schilling claimed that the Red Sox don't regret the Matzusaka signing one bit. Literally said "I bet they don't regret it one bit." Really Curt? You really think Theo Epstein is the kind of GM that will be like "oh we won the WS with him on the team in 07 and we got some Japanese fans so it's totally cool that he's given us like one and a half good seasons out of 6." Cause from what I know about Theo, he seems a little more numbers minded than that.
Other thought: Brian Sabean is a massive chode. I understand you're upset about Posey but you're a friggin GM, act with some professionalism. "Oh if he never players another MLB game we'll all be happy," and "We talked to Matheny and we know how to handle it." What are you gonna do, go get your six-shooter and call up a posse? I don't know if Cousins broke a rule, or was malicious, or deserving of suspension, but get over it dude. Talking about Cousins like he's obscure so that somehow makes it worse, like if Hanley Ramirez did it, it'd all be cool. He wasn't trying to break his ankle and he doesn't want Posey out for the season. Injuries happen, and they suck, especially when they happen to good
Speaking of rule breaking, I don't remember O'Dowd, Towers, DePodesta, or any of the other GMs complaining in the press about games they lost when Sabean paraded his roided freak up and down the west coast.
