that isn't real is it?
Quote:
A frustrated Verlander, who threw his second career no-hitter last Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays, said his parents Richard and Kathy had asked if he would be receiving some kind of promotion for his accomplishment, if this meant he would finally be allowed to hit during the games, if he would have received a promotion had he thrown a perfect game instead, why he “slacks off” and throws some pitches slower than others, and whether or not he needed any money.
“Their eyes light up at the mention of the New York Yankees. My mom will say something about how Dad just read in an article that the Yankees want to improve their pitching, and then she’ll ask if that’s something I could apply for,” Verlander said. “Over and over she says how it can’t hurt to call them. And that the next time we play the Yankees, I should make my presence known by giving them my business card, a cover letter, and a resumé.”

It depends on your definition of "real". :)
Interestingly enough, at one time things actually were kind of like that in the American League. If you played well with one of the perinnial bottom dwellers like the Browns or the A's, you had a good chance of being traded to one of the better teams, like the Yankees. On the other hand, play badly with one of the good teams, and there was a good chance that instead of being sent to the minors, you'd get traded to the Senators.

I think "Around the Horn" is just awful.

I saw it.
EDIT: Did someone say something in the chatbox earlier re: Smoltz and/or Glavine? Because it wasn't me, and I got three offers for Smoltz in the span of an hour.

Nothing out of the ordinary. I absolutely hate that show. All the "journalists" on that show do is grandstand. Woody Paige is functionally retarded and the rest of them aren't much better.

Another horribly written article on the Yanks-Sox rivalry. This sucky writer, ironically with the name Connor (+1 OD sucks) tries to persuade me it is a better rivalry than any other because of the history, even though all the demons have been hammered out (Red Sox ending title drought, A-Rod with a ring). At this point I would rather watch Giants, Dodgers, or Cubs, Cardinals than the Yanks, YAWN, Red Sox.
For my money Jets-Pats or Steelers-Ravens probably the best rivalry in sports and has been that way for years.

I'd say the best rivalries in sports are found in college football: Army-Navy, Michigan-Ohio State, Alabama-Auburn, etc.
When it comes to MLB, though I don't like either team, I'd still have to say that Yankees-Red Sox is the best rivalry, mostly because in recent years, they have both normally been in contention.

It's played out. A great many who are not fans of either team are just sick to death of hearing about it.
