I think that media contract value was revised to something like $1.5 billion.
Also, let's wait to see how Cliff Lee's impending free agency plays out before crowning him a part of the Ranger's long-term outlook.
WS champs this season
But with Hamilton/Lee/Cruz heading out soon, is it a one-shot deal.
I think they'll make a concerted effort to keep Hamilton around, but Lee is not as likely to stick around. I'd pretty much guarantee Lee is gone.
Lee goes to the Yanks.
cliff lee is a tough one for me. i don't think he'll be worth anywhere close to the contract he'll demand, but then again he's far and away the best SP potentially available. I think if you're Texas, you kind of have to overpay to keep him. And unfortunately, I think they will be bidding against a team that can overpay even more in the NYY.
I like what they got goin though. Even w/o Lee they can make moves that keeps them atop that division for a long time. Lilly is a good alternative if they lose Lee.
Lee is a definite Yankee with the decline of Burnett this year.
If the Rangers make it out of the first round this season, I'll be surprised. Long-term ... dunno. They're welcome to Vernon Wells' contract, though. He's a Texas guy.
I think they have a great shot to get out of the first round. I think they are a legitimate WS contender. I won't be surprised if they get knocked out in the first round either.....but they certainly have the talent and if they get hot collectively, they could go deep.
I like Texas' chances the most in the AL this year. Lee, Wilson, and Lewis form a playoff rotation that perhaps only the Twins can match and that bullpen of Feliz, O'Day, Oliver, Ogando...Oh, and for good measure let's throw Tommy Hunter down there as well. Yikes! These are not the same old 3 and out Rangers of yore (I think, though of course anything can and does happen) and if I were the Yankees or Tampa, I would not want to face them in the LDS. I really like the Twins potential rotation of Liriano, Pavano, and Duensing as well, but their bullpen is too much of a mix and match against the AL East behemoths, who if I'm not mistaken lead the world in late inning comebacks. The Yankees starting staff is in a bit of a mess right now, though if Andy Pettitte can get back to being himself, they could be OK, but I don't really see a third option to match the #3s of the other two teams. It seems to be Sabathia and cross your fingers at this point. Kerry Wood has really helped out that bullpen, but there's not much beyond him and Rivera. Tampa has David Price and then ??? for a playoff rotation. Soriano and Benoit have been an outstanding tandem out of the 'pen and Balfour has been solid as well. I think the Rangers are in a very enviable position this year and they could surprise a lot of people. There's also the fact that now that they're committed to building from within, the loss of Cliff Lee may not hurt as much as people think it will.
Made me mad to see them add payroll by trading for Lee after they had filed for bankruptcy. The system is set up so that can happen, but I think there should be penalties for an organization that defaults on loans. I'm also still mad that Lee did not go to NY.
Oh wah! I weep for you Crinkle420...Not! It is good for baseball that the Yankees can't do this. Lemme get this straight. You're saying that MLB should've stepped in and told the Rangers that they were not allowed to improve their on field product, which might create more fan interest, which would improve their bottom line and possibly help them get out from under their outstanding debts sooner. Um, OK...Personally I smell a bitter Yankees fan who has no reason to be bitter seeing as how his favourite team has now been to the post-season in 15 of the last 16 years and has won the World Series 5 times in those 16 years. But please be my guest, go ahead and stomp your feet if it makes you feel better. That's why Yankee fans are nearly universally loathed. Not because they support a team whose ownership puts a lot of their massive revenue back into the team. That's an admirable trait. It's the overwhelming sense of entitlement that reeks and causes reactions like yours to the Lee non-trade.
