Red Sox Memoirs - 1918 Red Sox and On
Due to the unfortunate death of Red Sox Memoirs due to my own stupid-ass mistake :(, I'm starting a new dynasty. This is going to start with the 1918 Red Sox. Although I chose 1918 because I wanted to have Babe Ruth on my team, this dynasty will not be like Red Sox Memoirs where I will be cataloging a players career. A good comparison for what I'm shooting for would probably be more along the lines of McPhale's Braving the 80's. Month-by-month updates and quickly moving through the seasons. Not a whole lot of detail, but still enough to make it fun for me to write and hopefully for you to read. My desire is to get this up to present day MLB and beyond. Throughout the course of it I'll be keeping an eye on competitive balance, and also messing with the league and bending it to my will. For example, relocating teams, putting expansions teams in different cities than where they actually came about, messing with league structure, and so on and so forth.
So I guess it's time to start things! Wish me luck!

TEAM PREVIEW
1918
Lineup Preview:
#1 C Wally Schang (84), 28 years old
#2 CF Amos Strunk (78), 29 years old
#3 1B Stuffy McInnis (80), 27 years old
#4 LF Babe Ruth (95), 23 years old
#5 RF Harry Hooper (79), 30 years old
#6 SS Evertt Scott (70/76), 25 years old
#7 2B Jack Barry (70), 30 years old
#8 3B Walter Barbare (63/65), 26 years old
~~Pitchers Spot~~
Lineup Thoughts: Pretty solid. 1-5 is very good, and you can never complain when you've got the Bambino in the clean-up spot, but it does tail off a little after that. Very, very patient line-up for the most part, and it should be capable of putting up a good number of runs. Expect MVP numbers from the Babe.
Bench Preview:
BN #1 C Sam Agnew (71), 30 years old
BN #2 IF Heinie Wagner (58/59), 37 years old
BN #3 OF Hack Miller (75/78), 24 years old
BN #4 1B Dick Hoblitzel (74), 29 years old
BN #5 1B Del Gainer (67), 31 years old
BN #6 2B Dave Shean (56/58), 34 years old
Bench Thoughts: We've got some depth in the outfield, but that's about it. Maybe trade some of the outfield depth in an effort to get more depth all-around the diamond, or possibly for a starting second or third baseman.
Starting Rotation Preview:
SP #1 RHP Joe Bush (90/93), 25 years old
SP #2 RHP Carl Mays (92), 26 years old
SP #3 LHP Dutch Leonard (89), 25 years old
SP #4 LHP Herb Pennock (90), 24 years old
SP #5 RHP Sam Jones (86/91), 25 years old
Starting Rotation Thoughts: We have a very, very good and very, very young starting rotation. Not a whole lot of guys that are gonna post big strikeout numbers, but they'll all throw a lot of innings and most likely have very, very low ERA and walk numbers.
Bullpen Preview:
SR #1 RHP John Woods (69/79), 20 years old
SR #2 RHP Dick McCabe (73/78), 22 years old
SR #3 RHP Vince Molyneaux (74/75), 29 years old
SR #4 LHP Bill Clowers (69/79), 19 years old
MR RHP Dave Black (77/81), 25 years old
LR RHP Weldon Wyckoff (85), 26 years old
Bullpen Thoughts: It's decentish, maybe a bit on the below-average side in my opinion. Fortunately given the era and given our starting rotation we shouldn't be seeing any of these guys, besides maybe Wyckoff, too awful much.

RED SOX RECAP
APRIL 1918
Games of Note:
April 5th; Opening Day - Joe Bush makes the opening day start and gets roughed up, as does the rest of the pitching staff, as we fall 13-4 on opening day. Harry Hooper goes 3-5 with an RBI in the loss. Wally Schang also suffers an injury in the game and goes down for 14 days, with Sam Agnew filling in for him.
April 9th; First win of the Season - Our first win of the season comes against the Yankees in a 4-2 squeaker. Herb Pennock throws a complete game and gives up only two runs to help us to the 'W'.
April 15th; Slugfest in Boston - We win our third game of the season in a massive slugfest with the Senators. The final score ended up at 17-16. Ruth hit his fourth homer of the season, and Harry Hooper went 5-7 to raise his batting average to above .440.
April 20th; Wyckoff hurls Shutout - We win the game 1-0 as Weldon Wyckoff pitches an excellent game. Wyckoff went all nine innings without allowing a run on four hits and struck out three. Our one run came in the bottom of the third on an error by third baseman Jimmy Austin to plate Heinie Wagner.
April 30th; Win pulls us to within two games of first place Cleveland Indians - A 4-3 win over the Tigers, in which Ruth hit his 8th home run of the season and Wyckoff threw another complete game, pulls us to within two games of the first place Indians.
Thoughts:
Month started off kinda crappy, as we started 4-7, but it evened off and we finish the month pretty strong and we're only two games outta first place. The pitching has been hit or miss, but fortunately Wycoff has provided us with some great spot starts here and there. Aside from Ruth and Hooper the offense has been mediocre, but the results are there in terms of wins so I won't complain.....yet.
April MVP
LF BABE RUTH
Surprising, right? He accounted for eight of the team's nine home runs and leads the team in RBI's and batting average by a longshot. He ranks first in the league in homers (by twice what the guy in second has), second in batting average, first in RBI's, and first in OPS.
Bush bounced back from his ugly opening day start nicely. He went 3-3 in six starts and 46 1/3 innings, and had a very pretty ERA of 2.91. Wyckoff comes in a close second with his three wins and ERA of 1.26, but I gave it to Bullet Joe because he pitched about 20 more innings than Wyckoff.

BAKER TO BEANTOWN
FRANK BAKER TRADED TO RED SOX
--May 11, 1918
Today the Philadelphia A's approached us with an offer we simply could not refuse. They offered us third baseman Frank Baker (80), for pitching prospect Buzz Wetzel (71/81). Since we are in the thick of the AL Pennant race, and our previous third baseman was hitting with the skill and ferocity of a feather, this was a no-brainer for us. Baker gives us another good contact and eye bat, while also providing respectable defense at the hot corner, neither of which Barbare did. Buzz wasn't too special as a prospect, so I had no qualms with letting him go in exchange for an immediate offensive and defensive upgrade.

Re: Red Sox Memoirs - 1918 Red Sox and On
RED SOX RECAP
MAY 1918
Games of Note:
May 4; Start of three game losing Streak - Despite another excellent outing by Wyckoff, this game was the start of what proved to be a three game losing streak that saw us go from a half game back of the Indians to 3 1/2 or 4 games back from the Indians. Wyckoff allowed only one earned run over nine innings, but an error in the third inning led to the two difference-making runs.
May 19; Joe Wood shutout pulls Red Sox to within two games of First - A masterfully pitched game by Bullet Joe pulls us to within two games of first place. Joe pitched the complete game shutout, allowing only five hits and three walks, striking out two. The offense also helped out, with Wally Schang going 3-5 with a homer and two RBI's from the leadoff slot.
May 26; 20-6 beatdown by Red Sox - We issued a 20-6 beatdown to the Tigers in order to stay two games back of the Indians. The clear star of the game was Babe Ruth, as he went 3-5 with two walks, four runs, two homers, and 7 RBI's.
May 30; Red Sox take two of three from Indians - We managed to win the rubber game in the three game set against the Indians in order to pull within a game of first place. We collected 13 hits in the win, with Barry, Hooper, and Baker all driving in multiple runs.
Thoughts:
We went 19-10 for the month, which is certainly nothing to be unhappy with, but we had some missed opportunities. The two three-game losing streaks at the beginning and the middle of the month came with horrible timing, as the first time around the Indians managed to put some space between us, and the second time we missed an opportunity to take the lead for the AL Pennant. Hooper cooled off A LOT, as his batting average dropped from well over .400 to .323. Baker had a good start with us, hitting at a .276/.315/.483 clip with 3 homers and 15 RBI's.
Month MVP
LF BABE RUTH
The man is a beast. He's probably the league MVP right now, let alone team MVP. He leads the team by a wide margin in all the triple crown categories, as well as just about every other offensive statistic you can think of, minus stolen bases. He's still first in homers in baseball by a wide margin, still first in RBI's (though the gap has closed a little bit), and first in OPS.
Bush continues to support the ace moniker. First on the team in innings pitched and strikeouts, and second in ERA and wins. He has six complete games and three shutouts thus far on the season, and has put forth a quality start in eight of his 13 starts.

RED SOX RECAP
JUNE 1918
Games of Note:
June 2; 6-1 wins gives Red Sox possession of First Place - A 6-1 win over the Philadelphia A's gives us a half game lead for the AL Pennant lead. Carl Mays pitches a complete game and allows just the one run, while Stuffy McInnis and Ruth drive in a pair of runs each.
June 9; Four game winning streak comes to an end - Our four game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Tigers. Pennock allowed six runs in just six innings and Ruth drove in two of our three runs. Despite the loss we're still 2 games up for the Pennant.
June 14; Red Sox lose opening game of three game set with Indians in Extras - We lost the opening game of our three game series against the Indians in ten innings. We mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth to tie it, and then left the tying run on third in the tenth. The loss still puts us 1 game up on them.
June 16; Red Sox take one of three, maintain AL Pennant Lead - The series didn't go well at all. But we did manage to take game #3 in order to avoid being swept and to reclaim the AL lead after the Indians tied it with wins in the first two games of the series.
June 22; Five game losing streak Snapped - With an 8-7 win over the Athletics we snapped our five game losing streak. The streak saw us go from one up for the pennant to two back. We were helped out by Ruth and Baker homers, as well as brilliant work out of the pen by Bill Clowers and Dick McCabe.
June 30; Red Sox continue winning Streak - So just a week after losing five in a row, we win six in a row and reclaim the Pennant lead. Baker was the star, going 2-6 with a home run and four RBI's.
Thoughts:
Well we went 14-13 which wasn't as good as previous months in terms of winning percentage, but we did manage to take the Pennant lead near the beginning of the month and reclaim it by the end of the month, in spite of relinquishing it for a short while. Frank Baker has proven to be a very valuable pick-up for us. In 46 games he's hitting .321/.368/.485/.853 (only one on the team besides Babe Ruth with an OPS higher than .800) with five homers and 31 RBI's. The offense in general has been picking it up very nicely lately. We don't get a lot of XBH (besides Ruth and Baker), but most of the lineup is hitting for a solid average and drawing a good share of walks.
June MVP
LF BABE RUTH
Yeah, surprising, I know. He's got 19 homers, which is 12 more than anyone in the American League and 10 more than anyone in both leagues. His 78 RBI's are 11 more than anyone in the AL, and he's third in batting average to George Sisler by 21 points. The only way he doesn't win the League MVP at this point is if he gets hurt and misses a considerable amount of time.
The starting rotation was pretty pathetic in June, and Joe Bush missed a few starts with an injury, but Clowers was dominant out of the 'pen this month. In 17 innings pitched in June he allowed only one run, to give him an ERA of 0.52 for the month. Additionally, he posted a 3-1 record with a save for the month.

Re: Red Sox Memoirs - 1918 Red Sox and On
THE DRAFT
GABBY GOES FIRST, GROVE SECOND
--June 3, 1918
On June 3rd the draft took place with some of baseballs future starts going in the first few picks. The number one pick this year belonged to the Pittsburgh Pirates, and with it they selected 17 year old catcher Gabby Hartnett (72/96). Gabby looks as if he'll be a very complete and well-rounded player. His contact and power both project at an All-Star level, as does his defense.
With the second pick the Philadelphia A's 18 year old Lefty Grove (88/97). Why the Pirates passed on Grove for Hartnett is anyone's guess, but I'm sure the A's don't mind. Grove already has a solid fastball and curveball, as well as average control and movement of his pitches. With a few years he may even become a good strikeout pitcher.
Other notable first round picks include CF Hack Wilson (69/83) going 18th overall to the Phillies, SP George Earnshaw (83/93) at #9 overall to the Reds, and SP Pete Donohue (80/94) at #8 overall to the Senators.
As for the Red Sox portion of the draft, with the first pick we got reliever-turned-starter Syl Johnson (75/92). We were looking for position players because we have no good position player prospects, but all the first-round quality ones were gone at our pick. Syl sports a very good curve and sidearm curve, as well as good movement and control on his pitches. He does suffer from some health concerns, but hopefully they won't manifest themselves.
We did address the lack of position prospects throughout the remainder of the draft by taking 16 year old LF Lucas Stevens (55/81) in the second round, C Merv Shea (58/76) in the third, 2B Billy Rhiel (55/76) in the fourth, and SS Bill Narleski (52/71) in the final round of the draft.

Re: Red Sox Memoirs - 1918 Red Sox and On
BLOCKBUSTER BETWEEN PHILLY AND BOSTON
WILLIAMS TO BOSTON, JONES TO PHILLY
In a somewhat surprising move the Red Sox have moved 25 year old ace caliber pitcher Sam Jones (88/93), along with Weldon Wyckoff (86), Hack Miller (75/78), and $15,000 dollars to Philadelphia. In return the Red Sox receive the Phillies CF Cy Williams (88), SS Dave Bancroft (84), and LF Irish Meusel (75).
This is a very, very good deal for us. We get another power threat in Cy Williams and his 9 home runs, a massive upgrade at shortstop with Bancroft, and it deepens our bench with Meusel, as well as pushing Amos Strunk to the bench because Williams will now be starting in CF. This trade gives us possibly the best middle of the line-up around, with a 3-4-5 of Williams-Ruth-Baker combining for 35 home runs so far on the season.
I also find it to be a good deal for the Phillies. They are in a rebuilding mode at 36-46, and Jones and Wyckoff are both young and give them a solid core of pitchers to build around. While Williams, on the other hand, is 30 years old and of no use to a team like the Phillies. They also get a substantial amount of money (half what we had to play with), to push their cash reserve to over $60,000.
This does mean some roster changes for us. In place of Sam Jones as the #5 SP will be recently drafted Syl Johnson (75/91), and called up for Wyckoff will be lefty Walt Kinney (80/83). Additional call-ups send downs as a result of this include reliever Dave Black (79) for Jean Dubuc (82), and Cy Williams and Irish Meusel will be taking the place of Heinie Wagner (57) and Del Gainer (67).

RED SOX RECAP
JULY 1918
Games of Note:
July 4; Indians take three of four in Boston to reclaim Pennant Lead - The Indians issued a 13-8 smack down in the final game of a four game series to take three games in the series and the Pennant. Tris Speaker scored four runs for the Indians in their win.
July 9; Red Sox beat Yankees 3-1 to retake First - Dutch Leonard gave us a beautiful complete game, allowing just one run and striking out four on 98 pitches, to help us to the win. Cy Williams also went 2-4 in the win that helped us retake first place in the AL.
July 13; New Red Sox combine to drive in seven in 13-3 Boston Win - The two new additions of Dave Bancroft and Cy Williams combined to drive in seven runs in this 13-3 win over the A's. The win also marks our eighth in a row and gives us a 2 game lead over the White Sox in the American League.
July 17; Indians destroy Red Sox.....Again - On the 15th they brought our winning streak to an end at nine games, and then they sweep the series by winning on the sixteenth and today on the 17th as well. The sweep puts us into a tie for first with them.
July 26; Red Sox smack Senators 13-2 - We win big over the Senators to stay tied with the Indians in the American League. Ruth hit his 22nd home run of the season in the game, but Cy Williams and Carl Mays each drove in three runs. Carl Mays also went all nine innings and allowed just two unearned runs on eight hits.
Thoughts:
17-11 is always good, but for some reason we're finding it virtually impossible to beat the Indians. We were 1-6 against them this month, and for the season we're roughly 3-10 against them. This is obviously a problem as they're one of the main contenders for the AL Pennant, along with the White Sox. Regardless, we enter August at 1 1/2 games back of the AL Pennant lead.
Cy hasn't been providing the power I was hoping for when I acquired him, but he does have 20 RBI's in 23 games, in spite of a .273/.336/.364 line. Bancroft has been great in 23 games. He's got 11 RBI's and a line of .392/.482/.495.
July MVP
LF BABE RUTH
He didn't hit as many home runs as he did in some previous months (only four this month). But that didn't stop him from driving in 20 runs and slugging near .600 in July. He also hit a tick below .400 for the month and got on base at a .534 clip. His totals now stand at 23 homers and 98 RBI's, both first in all of baseball, and his .373 batting average places him 3rd in the AL, approximately 20 points behind Detroit's Ty Cobb.
Mays was brilliant in July, going 6-1 in seven starts. He also put up an ERA of 2.86 in roughly sixty innings pitched and struck out 20 opposing batters. His 14 seasons wins are also good for first in the American League, by one over teammate Herb Pennock, and his 197 IP are also first in the AL, by eight over Pennock.

RED SOX RECAP
AUGUST 1918
Games of Note:
August 3; Sox win 12-3 on Williams 6 RBI's - We won the game 12-3 with a great deal of help from center fielder Cy Williams. Williams was 5-6 with his 11th home run of the season, a triple, three runs, and SIX runs driven in. Ruth also hit his 24th home run of the season, and Mays went all nine innings and allowed just three runs on 11 hits.
August 11; Red Sox defeat Yanks 12-0 - Joe Bush pitches a complete game shutout, and Ruth hits home run #27 and drives in four runs in the win. Bancroft also homered and drove in fou runs, as well as hitting his 25th double.
August 22; Sox earn series split with Indians - We earn a series split with the Indians, thanks in large part to a complete game, three-run effort by Dutch Leonard, and Babe Ruth's 30th home run of the season. The win keeps us at three games back for the AL Pennant.
August 31; Red Sox beat Browns 8-0 to pull within 1 - Thanks to a complete game shutout by Dutch Leonard, we win this game 8-0. Schang and Baker each homered, and Baker, Ruth, and Evertt Scott all drove in two runs in the win, which brought us to within a game of first place in the American League with just a month to play.
Thoughts:
We went 19-9 for the month, but due to our continued failure to beat the Indians, we remain one game back with only 19 games to play. Obviously we can make up one game and more in 19 games, but if we don't play well in this final month and at least remain competitive, I might just end up with an ulcer.
August MVP

Was there any doubt? 31 home runs, 117 RBI's, 113 walks, a line of .372/.493/.658 and still 19 games to play? Those numbers are pretty otherworldly, especially when you take into account the era we're playing in here.
Bush has been our most consistent pitcher all year. His 3.27 ERA is first on the team. His 228 innings are third, and they would be even higher if he hadn't missed a few starts earlier in the year. He went 3-1 for the month and posted a 1.70 ERA while striking out 12 batters. An honorable mention goes out to Dutch Leonard who put up a 3.38 with 2 wins and 0 losses.

RED SOX RECAP
SEPTEMBER 1918
Games of Note:
September 11; 3-2 loss at Senators leaves Boston 3 back - This three to two loss (which can be attributed in large part to the three errors we made) leaves us three games back of the Indians. With just ten games left in the season this lost is devestating, and basically means we have to win out in order to win the Pennant.
September 14; Shellacking against Yankees win pulls Boston to within Two - This 18-5 win, which saw Schang, Ruth, Baker, and McInnins all drive in three runs, brought us to within two games of the Indians for the Pennant. With only seven games remaining it's all or nothing at this point.
September 20; 7-4 loss at A's eliminates gives Indians Pennant - We were down three games with only three to play, which meant we needed to win out and the Indians needed to lose out in order for us to make it. And unfortunately neither of those things happened. We did all we could, but it just wasn't quite enough.
Thoughts:
Damn! I really thought we had a good chance when we were only a couple games back after sweeping the Yankees, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be. We had too many injuries down the stretch (Baker, Williams, and Bancroft all missed time in September with injuries) and not enough time to deal with them I suppose. 94-60 is still a successful season however, and it's definitely something we can build on for next season. If we bring in a second baseman that's capable of slugging higher than the .317 Barry did this season I think we've got a great shot at the Pennant next season.
I'm giving the season MVP and Cy Young there own post, so nothing down here this time.

Season MVP
LF BABE RUTH
Shouldn't be any surprise since the guys probably the league MVP as well. His 34 home runs are a single season record, as are his 138 RBI's. He really, really carried the team all season. In September when we really needed to win some games to even have a chance at the Pennant he was great, hitting at a .301/.414/.507 clip, with three homers and 21 RBI's.
It was hard to not give this to Carl Mays and his 21 wins, but Bush was the better pitcher throughout the course of the season. He led the team in ERA at 3.20, and strikeouts with 107. He also finished second in wins with 19 and innings pitched with 267 even. In September he was 4-1 with a 2.79 ERA in about 39 innings pitched.

Feel free to post guesses on who ends up winning the series. You've got a 50/50 chance, and if you get it right I'll let you make a prospect for next year's draft. I'll post the conclusion of the series tomorrow, probably a little bit after noonish.

Yeah, I noticed that too, lol. It was a good race though. Just looking over their team I can't point to one thing and say that was the reason they beat us. Our line-ups were equally good, our starting rotations were equally good, and our bullpen's were equally good. I guess it just boils down to injuries and luck, but oh well. I'll get 'em next time.

I'm about to get to work on writing up the deciding games, so if you want to take a stab do it soon!

Re: Red Sox Memoirs - 1918 Red Sox and On
Okay, it's all written up. But I'm gonna wait a while to post it and see if I can get some more guesses. I'll put the results up at around 2:00 no matter if there are more guesses or not.

Re: Red Sox Memoirs - 1918 Red Sox and On
EXPIRING CONTRACTS
1918 OFF-SEASON
(A) = Arbitration
Catchers:
Wally Schang (86), 29 years old
Schang had an excellent year in 1918. He put up the highest OPS he's had since becoming a starting catcher at .783, and his 38 doubles are as many as he had in the prior three seasons COMBINED. He's also got a hose behind the plate and he blocks a lot of balls. Only problem is, he's gonna be looking for roughly a $7,000 raise for about four years, and I'm not sure about giving four years at $16,000 per to a 29 year old catcher.
VERDICT - Want to keep, may not be able to.
Corner Infielders:
Del Gainer (67), 31 years old
Really, no incentive for me to keep him. I'll keep him if he'll take less money than he was making before, but if not, he gone.
VERDICT - Probably gone.
Frank Baker (78), 32 years old
He was great after coming over to Boston. He hit at a .330/.372/.446/.818 clip with six homers and 75 RBI's in 114 games. The question is, at 32 years old can he repeat that? His career numbers seem to indicate so. If he doesn't ask for too much of a raise I'll probably hold on to him.
VERDICT - Probably coming back.
Heinie Wagner (57), 38 years old
Yeah, he ain't coming back.
VERDICT - Donezo
Middle Infielders:
Jack Barry (67), 31 years old
He had an OPS of .626 last season, so that's not good. But regardless, I do want to bring him back, at the right price. I think he'd be good as a bench player and a pinch-runner, and assuming that there's nothing out there for Free Agent second baseman or trade opportunities, he'd probably start again.
VERDICT - Probably coming back.
Everett Scott (73/84), 25 years old
Definitely coming back. One reason being if I decide to let Barry go, he'd probably be my next option at second base. And at worst he's a good fill-in all-around the infield. Not to mention the next guy on this list....
VERDICT - Coming back.
(A) Dave Bancroft (84), 27 years old
So he's arbitration eligible, which is good. The problem, however, is that he's gonna be able to ask for a lot of money. And I'm already gonna have a lot of money going around from what I've already written about and what I have yet to write about. Obviously I really, really want to bring him back, and I probably will, but it's probably gonna be a steep price tag.
VERDICT - Most likely coming back, albeit very expensively.
Outfielders:
Babe Ruth (98), 23 years old
Yeah, that guy. With the record-breaking year he had it only makes sense that he'll be looking for a record-breaking contract. And I'm definitely gonna give it to him, there's no question about it, he's just gonna break me financially.
VERDICT - Coming back no matter the cost.
Harry Hooper (79), 31 years old
Hooper had the best year of his career. He posted career highs in batting average (.319), slugging percentage (.441), OPS (.831), hits (196), RBI's (71), and doubles (38), so obviously I want to bring him back. But he's 31 years old and I doubt he'll be able to keep up that kind of performance much longer, and I do have some decent alternatives, and I'm sure there will be outfielders available in Free Agency.
VERDICT - Probably not coming back.
Pitchers:
Joe Bush (93/96), 25 years old
Yep, the team MVP AND Cy Young are up for new contracts this off-season. Obviously I'm keeping him, but he's already making a pretty penny ($18,200 to be exact) and he'll be looking for a hefty raise as well.
VERDICT - Coming back no matter the cost.
(A) Carl Mays (93), 26 years old
He's arbitration eligible, so he'll be coming back, it's just a matter of cost. 1918 was somewhat of a down year for him, so hopefully he won't ask for too much, but in all likelyhood he will.
VERDICT - Coming back.
Herb Pennock (92), 24 years old + Dutch Leonard (86), 26 years old
That's right, the whole starting rotation is up for new contracts. And one of these two guys isn't coming back, especially with Syl Johnson around. I lean toward letting Leonard go due to relative age and talent, but it will probably boil down almost purely to money.
VERDICT - Hopefully Pennock stays and Leonard goes, but it's anyone's guess.

Re: Red Sox Memoirs - 1918 Red Sox and On
Resignings:
C Wally Schang (86) signed a 4-year extension at $12,000/yr
I was really surprised at this one. Originally he was asking for $16,000-17,000, but he accepted my first offer at $12,000, which I was more than happy to give him.
2B Jack Barry (67) signed a 2-year extension at $4,500/yr
Less than he made last season, so I was more than happy to give it to him.
SS Dave Bancroft (84) awarded $13,000 for 1 year
Just about what I was expecting to give him. He made around $4,000 last year, so that's not too bad I suppose.
SS Everett Scott (73/84) awarded $4,900 for 1 year
Almost exactly what he made last year, maybe even a tad less. Needless to say this one didn't hurt.
LF Babe Ruth (98) awarded $40,000 for 1 year
That accounts for about 1/4th of my payroll, but he's well worth it. And honestly, I'm a little surprised he didn't ask for more. Next step: sign him to a long-term deal.
RF Harry Hooper (79) contract expired
He actually didn't ask for as much as I thought he would, but it was still too rich for my blood.
C Sam Agnew (69) contract expired
Didn't say his contract was up before, but regardless, wasn't worth the coin.
3B Frank Baker (79) contract expired
He wanted like $15,000, and I didn't want to give him more than like $12,000 so I had to let him go. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll be able to bring him back if no one else signs him throughout the course of the off-season.
3B Walter Barbare (64) contract expired
Yeah, didn't know his was up either. But he wasn't worth it to me either.
1B Del Gainer (67) signed a 2-year extension at $1,100/yr
Actually less than he made last season, so obviously I was happy to give it to him.
SP Joe Bush (93/96) signed a 4-year extension at $18,000/yr
This is actually a little less than what he made last year. Anytime you get an ace to accept a pay DEDUCTION after a great season is always a great thing.
SP Carl Mays (93) awarded $12,000 for 1 year
That's only about a $3,000 raise if I'm not mistaken. Not bad at all for a guy who won 21 games last season.
SP Dutch Leonard (86) contract expired
The way it ended up Leonard was willing to take a big pay-cut to stay and I probably could have kept him and Pennock, but it still would've put me a little more over-budget than I want to be, so I had to let him go.
SP Herb Pennock (92) signed a 4-year extension at $11,000/yr
Quite a bit less than I was expecting him to ask for, not a bad deal at all.
