Should the twins trade Mauer?
With one year remaining, rumors out there have speculated he'd be looking for a 7 year contract at a minimum. It seems for some reason people want to speculate he'll also give some kind of "home town discount" on the salary side. Regardless, any deal is going to be high priced and long.
With a small payroll already, should they put a large percentage of it into Mauer, who is one of the best ever at his position and young...but plays a demanding position which over the course of a long term deal may be a detriment.
They could bring back quite a bit for Mauer, but it will be unpopular with the fan base.

Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
Makes more sense to trade Morneau.

Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
They cant get enough back for him

^^^^^ This. If payroll is a concern that is...remember the new ballpark, which might allow them to keep both M & M boys. ;)

Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
When Mauer is more than likely to take a home town discount, and is a clear franchise player....it makes no sense to trade him unless you are getting a Albert Pujols/Hanley/Lincecum type player back.
And even then, that wouldn't be enough.
If money is an issue, Morneau makes much more sense....and you can still get a healthy return for him.

Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
He won't get traded. Reportedly the Twins are close to signing him to an extension.
-
Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
This could be a unanimous vote.

They've 'been close' to signing an extension for awhile

Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
MG or FTB will vote yes and ruin it or something
-
Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
I said no, but it all depends on what Mauer is actually asking for. If he is asking for a contract that the Twins aren't willing to sign, then I can see the reason to trade him - and if they do that they'll also have to make it clear to the fanbase what he was asking for, and why it doesn't make sense.
-
Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
Assuming he is looking for 7 years - how much is he actually worth? My guess is somewhere not much higher than Holliday signed for - 7/120 to maybe 7/140. Any higher than that is just gambling on the idea that he will be able to remain a catcher for the next 7 years. Either way, I don't see him being more than a 5 win player by the end of the contract - mainly because he won't be a catcher.

That.
Even if the unthinkable would happen and for some odd reason, the Twins decide trading him is better than the draft picks in free agency, I don't see a possible trade scenario where it would satisfy the fans enough.
I was actually going to make a post about this regarding Albert Pujols and Joe Mauer. Let's say that one of their teams decides to trade them. What would you possibly offer if your team was interested in him? I was having some fun thinking of the trade scenarios and how "fair" they would be to both sides.

I would say similar to what Seattle got for Griffey would be at least expected.
What teams even have the talent to land either player.
Let's do it.
Pujols for Kemp, Kershaw, Loney, and two B level specs.
I would probably take that ^^
-
Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
Tempting, but if I was L.A. (budget issues aside), just thinking about it right now, I wouldn't include Kemp AND Kershaw. I'd be more willing to trade Kershaw than Kemp.

Mike Cameron, Brett Tomko, Jake Meyer & Antonio Perez is all you want back? Hell, I think there are plenty of teams that can afford to land both Pujols & Mauer then :p
-
Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
Yeah, the Griffey situation is a bit weird because he wanted to go to Cincinnati so they had little leverage.
-
Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
You have to remember that the Twins are only trading one season, or maybe just a third of a season, of Mauer before he becomes a free agent. Unless he is willing to sign for a lot less than market value at his new home, he isn't really worth that much in a trade. Pujols is different simply because he is locked in to a contract for next year at below market value - but the same thing would apply to him next year.
This is why I doubt they'll trade him, and if they end up not signing him and taking the two draft picks, that is better than taking just about any trade deal that you will get and having to deal with the fan base. Better PR to see him sign in New York for 7/200 and then explain that the Twins can't afford that contract.

Let's see...which contract should they trade?...The awesome catcher who is a hometown boy, or the awesome 1B (far less valuable position) who's not even a goddamn American for Chrissakes ;) ...That is of course, as I said above, if they need to trade one of them. Put yourselves in the shoes of the Twins' front office (preferably before you vote). Which one do you think is easier to sell to the hometown fans that have seen this happen over and over again, but also know that the post-season has come to Minneapolis/St. Paul inspite of these unfortunately necessary trades? I think Bill Smith improved his standing with the J.J. Hardy/Carlos Gomez swap, but the M & M boys are franchise players and I'm not sure I'd be entirely comfortable with Smith as the trigger man in that type of swap. Then again he has to get back up on the horse at some point and management may (or may not) be asking for a slimmer payroll. Now that I think a little more on it, with all the free agents they brought in trading either Morneau or Mauer will be a tough sell, but Mauer would be damn near impossible.
-
Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
I'm thinking strictly in terms of talent, so hypothetically, you could assume that your team would agree to a contract with him to finalize the trade, that you didn't have budget issues, etc.
I'm just interested to see what type of trades somebody thinks their team would offer for Mauer or Pujols, again purely hypothetical and for fun, since I hope (and think) they'll both remain with their respective teams for their entire careers.

Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
The pirates and royals should trade their whole teams for pujols and mauer and they can be better than last year!

If that's the kind of return they get, I think the local natives will be firing at a dartboard to choose which of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes to toss Smith into. :D

Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
Here are the Twins highest 2010 salaries:
Justin Morneau / $15,000,000
Joe Mauer / $12,500,000
Joe Nathan / $11,250,000
Michael Cuddyer / $9,417,000
Jason Kubel / $4,100,000
Nick Punto / $4,000,000
Scott Baker / $3,000,000
I'm certain if it came down to it they would look to trade Joe Nathan or Michael Cuddyer first, although Cuddyer's 2011 option was picked up this winter (since it was required in his contract apparently), and I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that he becomes a 10-and-5 guy this season, so they'd have to trade him before the deadline.

Cuddyer is virtually untradeable in this "defense is important too" era. Talk about a stone glove. This offseason says: "We're going for it!". Trading Nathan, Morneau, or ack! Mauer says: "...Just kidding ;) ". Cuddyer would be the one to try to trade. Maybe there's a GM out there who hasn't figured out the defensive metrics, doesn't swoon for 5-tool outfielders and thinks they can take that bat and make him a superstar at age 31. Note: Dayton Moore is out because he likes toolsy players. :D

Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
You guys should trade Scott Baker to the Mariners. We'd send Alex Liddi your way! Future 3B!

Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
Tang, who would you trade from Seattle to land either player?
Aj, who would you trade from Toronto to land either player?
HGM, who would you trade from Arizona?
Jntg, who would you trade from Chicago?

Either? Mauer or who? For the record, I wouldn't trade at all for Mauer.

If you wanted either Pujols or Mauer, who would you trade out of Seattle to land either player?

Arizona's got a 21 year old version of Pujols. Psh.

Well, I wouldn't trade for either.
I would assume trade talks would start with either Michael Saunders or Dustin Ackley and I wouldn't give up either.

Dood, what part of "We just traded our greatest player of all-time and are now in a slow, steady and hopefully successful re-building period" do you not understand? You don't go trading for a Pujols or a Mauer unless you're going for it or it's part of a three way trade, where you're the intermediary team. The only types of players AA should be pursuing for the foreseeable future are high impact prospects or young, controllable types.

If you are a responsible GM....this is hypothetical and not in this realm of realism.
So what sort of players would you package for either player.
Or rather, what would you have to package for either player.

Re: Should the twins trade Mauer?
love that i'm in the minority again. I'm voting yes, because I can't see him agreeing to a contract less than 7 years long. And no way as MIN am I giving him a 7 year+ contract.
