Re: Required reading (Re: The Contest)
Please tell me the "better first baseman" that they could have signed.
And wait... they're only paying GMJ 1.5 million per year. For a big market team, that's not exactly "wasting resources".

Already did.

That's money that could've been used to sign a better first basemen.... you know, as I've said already.

He's made some terrible signings - Michael Tucker a while ago moments before the arbitration deadline, costing the Giants a draft pick that they would've kept had he waited for the deadline to pass before signing Tucker, Barry Zito of course...and some terrible trades, most famously the A.J. Pierzynski for Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser deal, but also the two trades this year for Freddy Sanchez and Ryan Garko. For a while, he had some weird fetish with old veterans, signing tons of mid-30's players and hoping for the best...and that sort of works when you have the best hitter in history at his peak playing for you, but once that guy's gone, it leaves a team of over-the-hill nobodies...Lots of negatives, and I don't think his positives are anything special.
Minaya is a so-so GM but the injuries this year highlighted the extreme lack of depth that is partially his fault.
I love how literally that whole post fits this situation.

You said the Garko trade was terrible, and that Omar Minaya was an okay GM, but that he needed to work on adding more depth.

I said he was a so-so GM. My opinion of him has soured since I wrote that (and remember, it wasn't a high opinion then).

1) You said Garko would be a good fit for the Mets at 1B.
2) Why?

I said he'd be better than Murphy/Tatis and is probably the best option left available.

Because of the multiple front office mishaps (the Tony Bernazard incident, issue with Carlos Beltran, etc.) and his offseason.

I think his offseason has been pretty okay. He filled a hole in left field (Bay), he made a couple of bad pickups (GMJ, Cora) for pretty low prices, he made a bunch of solid signings for the major league club (Blanco, Igarashi, Escobar, Tatis), and signed some minor league depth (Fogg, Catalanotto, Hessman, Everts, etc).
Also, how the hell is what Tony Bernazard did his fault?
Re: Required reading (Re: The Contest)
You guys might not have needed to sign all that shitty depth if you guys hadn't traded it all to the Mariners. WOOT!

By overpaying.

Oh! Great GM!

It's part of a series of issues that indicates that the FO just simply isn't very organized.

Uh... considering depth was one of our major problems last year... yeah it was pretty good that he's working on that.
Look, I'm not saying he's the best GM in the world. He's just not as mindblowingly terrible as you guys make him out to be.

You guys didn't get anything too great from us in that trade.
A backup OF (who is a FA now anyway), a meh 1B prospect who was trapped behind Ike Davis in NY, a good OF prospect, a solid pitching prospect, and Jason Vargas.

That's called depth.

Even if it wasn't a long term deal, I'd agree.

Signing 30 year olds to round out the AAA roster isn't what anybody means by "depth."

He's mediocre if you're being very generous.
