Million Dollar Question...

Alright y'all so I emailed Clay with a bunch of ideas now to follow up on this I have to ask EVERYONE... If Clay made just the base of the game with the option to create fictional players BUT had the ability to import and export teams created by YOU would YOU be willing to create current & past teams and post them on the forum for others to download ?

For anyone who chooses to ask me "why ask this"
I feel that Clay should focus on the SIM itself don't worry about the historical teams or anything else just the sim make the sim and perfect it. Have the ability to import and output teams for people to create there own teams and all and it'll give him MORE time to focus on the sim.

part of why I buy the game is the historical leagues.

would you still buy the game IF the historical leagues were created by users not Clay ? so that he can focus on the game and features and player development rather than historical leagues ?

if they were easily accessible. But I doubt the common buyer will know what to look for, or where to look for them.

And I am not sure how much maintenance there is to repeat the same historical information for each new version.

See this is why the games Clay creates has trouble going anywhere... as nobody is willing to help him out... everyone wants him to do everything as nobody wants "user input" no wonder he only allows "X" amount of seasons to be played for each year he releases a game...

I think its' about time things change for him but if nobody else is willing to do the work then it wont...

So when the 2011 versions come out be sure to be warned as it'll only have an additional 10 seasons of play involved in it... maybe 20 if your lucky...

I don't see anyone demanding anything.

and if he needs help, he can hire people.

P.S. people do help him out. All the time in fact. Through the progression of the game from it's origin, Mizerak, HGM, ohms law, boomboom etc have all done work with him/for him to help the game move forward.

I'm not sure what 4einc is asking for, but if it's for people to take the time and trouble to compile their own teams, imo, he's approaching Members of the wrong community.

I see the average FM (and BM) player as one who's into a lot of things - besides the many video games he plays, he has to work or study or socialize or all of the above...I see him liking the Mogul games, because they save him a lot of precious time...as much as he might like 4einc's idea of creating teams, he would have to put it on the back burner, behind all the other stuff going on in his life.

I, myself, happen to have the time and inclination to create teams, and whilst I find it great fun, and easy to do, it does take up scads of time.

I started dabbling in FM a few months ago - see the "Posters Trolls" thread in the "FM Leagues & Dynasties" forum - and besides the players I've created for that team at the direction of various "sponsoring" members, I've also put together, for my own amusement, a fictional team, which I hope will hold its own, against the historical clubs...as I recall, it took all of my (considerable, since I'm a retiree) spare time, and that was just for players that I could create out of the top of my head!

How much longer, therefor, it would take one to compile a team made up of historical players, then, since, first, the stats for the appropriate player woud have to be copied down on paper from reference sources, then copied, again, into the editing screen of FM...a process that would have to be repeated something like 50 times...absorbing, and exciting, true, but requiring the dedication of a crank like myself.

4einc has, in fact, sparked my own idea of forming such an historical team...taking the outstanding offensive or defensive player of any given year, and incorporating them into a super team to take part in the upcoming FM 2010 season - taking the period 1970 through 2009, this would provide 40 players of 11 defensive starters; 11 offensive starters; 3 kickers, plus 15 spare bods to cover special teams & injuries, etc.

Being a gregarious fellow, I would, of course, invite my fellow Members to take part in the formation of such a team by inviting them to vote for their all-time favourite player...all that anyone would have to do was to post, say "QB Bart Starr" then that would be a vote for Bart...of course, if later on Two other Members mentioned "Steve Spurrier" then Steve would get the nod.

I'll mull this over,for a while, then when I've shaken the bugs out of this concept, I'll post details in the "FM League & Dynasties". Meanwhile, any comments on this idea would be most welcome, and of course there's nothing to stop anyone from mentioning their favourite all-time player in this thread...that will be taken as a vote, for later on.

Yes. Who created the teams is invisible to 90+% of the buyers. They have to come here to discover Clay is a one-man show. At least that's the impression I'm getting from this and a couple of bug-related threads. Users, I suspect, care more about accuracy than about who specifically created which team.

The big issue with historical teams is comparisons over time. At the risk of blasphemy, no champion team from 15 years before could compare well with another champion team from any given now. The spread may be as little as 10 years (e.g., 1959 vs 1968 or 1972 vs 1982) but the mismatch is certain at 15 years and later. Someone may think up one team, but then a 20 years stretch wipes that one out.

So the trick is to achieve balance over time in player ratings. In this way, Clay did well. ;)
