I don't see how not re-signing Mauer would be a failure. If the Yankees, Red Sox, or any number of other teams chase after him, there is little to nothing special that Minnesota can offer that they can't. If he leaves he has a better chance of winning, a higher public profile meaning better endorsement contracts, and probably more money. Minnesota will offer him a significant contract, but I won't be surprised to see Mauer test the free agent market.

I will be, same with Pujols.
Mauer in paticular, loves St. Paul, loves the Twins, and loves playing there. I don't see why he would leave. Money, pssh. He is already looking to get 100 million.
Re: wait...the yankees did this?
I said it would be a failure for the Twins if they don't re-sign Mauer for the reasons noted by Jeffy just above.

He's from Minnesota. Born in St. Paul. I would see the failed re-signing of Mauer by the Twins as a huge failure of the franchise.
Re: wait...the yankees did this?
Haha, not saying that Mauer doesn't actually mean what he says about liking Minnesota & enjoying playing for his home town team, but if it's not true do you really think he would be out there ripping the team & the city?
Plus, it's always easy for someone to say they'll pass on extra millions of dollars to stay with their current team until it gets to the point where those extra millions (& looks at WS rings) are on the table in front of them
That said, I hope he opts for free agency so he can go to the Brew Crew :p
Re: wait...the yankees did this?
If the Twins don't bring him back, it's their own damn fault and they might as well not even try anymore. If you won't keep THAT guy around, arguably the most valuable player in the game today, what's the point?
