wait...the yankees did this?

Letting Damon walk and signing Winn...for 2 million... to replace him?
Thats something the Mets would do.....
-
Re: wait...the yankees did this?
It is. Especially with Gardner & Granderson already on the roster and their inability to hit LHP.
Cliff Lee will say sup to you in the playoffs. Cya!
-
Re: wait...the yankees did this?
i think its a quality move. they got him dirt cheap and i think at a value. over his career I beleive he's OK against LHP, he's got good speed, is supposedly a great clubhouse guy, and at least I think he's a solid defensive OF. The last part of that is something the Yanks have struggled with Damon and Matsui on. Winn and Granderson are nice OF improvements defensively. IMO, Winns bat is serviceable.
Damons bat was built for Yankee Stadium, but at the price he's requesting i'd let the door hit him in the a$$ too.
-
Re: wait...the yankees did this?
Well, I'm sure Damon's asking price hasn't dropped to $2 MM yet. ;)
-
Re: wait...the yankees did this?
You mean the Yanks.....have a budget!!?!?.......gasp!
-
Re: wait...the yankees did this?
They're saving up for next year's batch of free agents. A lot of nice players available next year.

Budgets don't carry over. I don't know why people believe this. Hence why Oakland went out and has tried to sign guys like Beltre and went out and got Sheets.

however contracts do. its not a terrible thought to believe a team might be looking long term and not want to be tied to long term contracts.

Right, but we're talking about a one year deal here, so contract length doesn't matter.

he clearly wasn't referring to this deal though, moreso Damons who is requesting a long term deal. He was explaining why they did this deal instead of Damon or a bigger name.
-
Re: wait...the yankees did this?
BTW, Dickay, Winn is a superb fielder. (Referring to you saying you think he's solid)

My mistake then. I just assumed he meant they were gonna save money and have it carry over to next year.

well, maybe i'm taking his comments wrong lol. i clearly took that he was saying they signed this short term deal so that money would be available for players they anticipate will be available next year or after.
i don't necessarily agree with that. i think it may be a small part of their thinking process but i doubt an overwhelming factor.
but maybe you're right...maybe he's saying they want to grow their piggy bank lmfao??:D

Re: wait...the yankees did this?
I don't see this as an improvement over Gardner.

I don't think it's meant to be.

I think it's meant to be an improvement over Granderson vs LHP.

We'll trade the Mets Ryan Langerhans for Niese and F-Mart.

Granderson was a fine move. Rodriguez wasn't, well, any sort of move. Wasn't bad, wasn't good, just average, providing some depth. Giambi wasn't terrible. Sheffield was fine for two years but Cashman managed to actually get something for him when his time was up. Wright and Pavano were bad, yes... but, you'll see, Cashman didn't get full control of them until the past couple years - previously, the Steinbrenners had a lot of input into the roster. Now, it's Cashman's, and since then, he hasn't made poor FA moves like Pavano and Wright and the farm system and young talent has increased greatly.
This Winn deal, too, can't be described as "horrible." It's 2 million bucks, chump change, for one year. Even if Winn sucks, the Yankees lose nothing.
Cashman is one of the better GM's in the league. I don't know why you have such a terrible view of him.

Re: wait...the yankees did this?
You forgot to include the Javier Vazquez deal. Terrible move by the Yankees.

There was absolutely no way that Damon would have returned to New York on an one-year deal. Even if he wanted it . . . Boras wouldn't let him.

Just don't want so many long-term contracts . . . I'm sure they're salivating over next year's batch of free agents.

i can't believe how outrageous some of these comments are seeing we're talking about a 4th OF'er signed for 2mil and 1 year.

If the Twins fail to re-sign Mauer . . . that will just be epic fail on their part. Lee has made it known that he will test the free agency market no matter what. And I think that a number of quality players are going to be free agents. It will be a nice field to pick and choose the players you need.

Kidding right? Or are you confusing agent with slave-master?
-
Re: wait...the yankees did this?
It was a joke. Though if it happened, Boras would basically be admitting that he f'ed in the initial negotiations.

Especially considering the Cubs just signed a 4th outfielder, who hasn't even played since 2008, and is coming off a second Tommy John surgery, to a 1 year 3.3 million contract. Wynn looks like a good signing compared to that. Yankee haters take a rest...
