A's prospect leaving the game for priesthood

Quote:
Outfielder Grant Desme, one of the Oakland A’s top prospects, has decided to retire from baseball in order to pursue the priesthood, multiple sources told FOXSports.com.
An A’s official confirmed Desme’s decision this morning, saying the 23-year-old is “serious” about the big career change.
When I heard the headline, I was expecting some mediocre low-minors guy, not one of their top prospects. Pretty sizable blow to the A's minor league system.

Re: A's prospect leaving the game for priesthood
that says something about passion for a belief and call to life
Re: A's prospect leaving the game for priesthood

And then you get comments like this.

This guy is an idiot leaving something that is real for something that is purely made up fantasty. He might as well go work for the Fantastic Four or the Tooth Fairy. May Scooby Doo bless your soul.

it's his call to life. He is obviously more passionate about his religious beliefs then he is about his passion for baseball. there is nothing wrong with that! For some religion, is a very real, very integral part of their lives. If agnostics and atheists don't like it, that's fine, they can not like it all they want. But when a young man feels called to make it his life, and willing to leave a promising young career as an athlete behind, that should tell you how passionate it is for some. Obviously he feels his life will make a greater difference as a priest than as a baseball player. I don't want to hear anyone judging that.

I was speaking as a fan out of frustration.
Re: A's prospect leaving the game for priesthood
If it somehow makes him happy and more complete, good for him. I wish we were all lucky enough to be able to follow our dreams over financial well-being.
as a fan of the team that had drafted him and spent money/time/manpower/effort on training and enriching him, I could certainly see some disappointment

Would you be upset if Albert Pujols walked away from the game to become a priest?
I can't blame A's fans for being upset at the loss of one of their top prospects.

I understand fandom losing a top spec. I certainly wouldn't love it, but I def wouldn't judge the move. You never like losing a top player, or prospect, ever.
