July 3
Red Sox (47-34) @ Blue Jays (35-47)
Red Sox 15 - Blue Jays 6
BIG game from the offense. Jeff Frye and Barry Larkin scored four runs each, while Nomar and Rondell White drove in four runs each. Mike Stanley only had one hit, but he drew four walks in six total plate appearancesn. And wakefield even pitched a decent game, going 7 1/3 innings and allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks.

BREAKING NEWS
Following this rout against the Blue Jays our star shortstop Barry Larkin was diagnosed with a broken finger that will sideline him for approximately a month. This injury is really bad for us, especially because Barry was crushing the ball at the time he was injured. Here's his line from his last ten games:
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/5...enhunter4j.jpg
In his place I've decided to call up top prospect Freddy Sanchez. I decided not to turn shortstop over to Wil Cordero because Cordero is an absolute butcher with the glove, and between starting against lefties in the outfield and filling in at first and left and third occasionally he gets plenty of at bats. Sanchez's minor league stats from this season and vitals:

Red Sox (48-34) @ Blue Jays (35-48)
Red Sox 5 - Blue Jays 2
Great game from Clemens tonight. He pitched seven innings, allowed one earned run on five hits and two walks, and K'ed six. We got some good offense too. Mike Greenwell went 1-4 with a two run homer, Nomar was 2-4 with an RBI and a double, and Vaughn was 2-4 with an RBI triple.

Red Sox (49-34) @ Blue Jays (35-49)
Red Sox 4 - Blue Jays 6
Jeff Suppan got a little roughed up again, enough for his ERA to go up by almost a full run. He allowed six runs on ten hits in 4 1/3 innings. The offense was decent, with Jeff Frye going 2-4 with two runs driven in, and both Nixon and Mike Greenwell hitting triples. Nixon also went 2-4 to raise his batting average to .250. Pat Hentgen did do a solid job of shutting us down, though, holding us to three runs on eight hits over eight innings.
WP - Pat Hentgen (5-8)
LP - Jeff Suppan (6-2)
SV - Mike Timlin (11)
HR - N/A
Thoughts: We had a pretty good series against the Jays that leaves us eight back of the division and 4.5 back of Chicago for the Wild Card. Next up we've got the Orioles as our last series before the All-Star Break. I'm really looking forward to the All-Star Break, especially in light of Barry's injury. It's a few less meaningful games Barry will have to miss with the injury. Hopefully Freddy Sanchez plays well in his stead.
And also, since I haven't posted these all season, some relief pitcher stats:
-
Re: Red Sox Memoirs - Spiderman and The Rocket (1996 - )
July 6
Red Sox (49-35) @ Orioles (42-43)
Red Sox 3 - Orioles 4
I might have to start playing these games in manager mode instead of GM mode, because I think my manager wears a helmet and tries to eat his own tongue judging by some of the calls he makes. Like trying to sacrifice bunt the game tying run to second in the ninth inning with a .300 hitter at the plate, for example. Anyways, this was a tough loss mostly because Moyer gave us a really solid outing, giving up four runs in 6 2/3 innings while striking out six. Offensively Freddy Sanchez got his first major league hit, a single to center in the top of the third inning off Sidney Ponson.
WP - Sidney Ponson (5-4)
LP - Jamie Moyer (7-3)
SV - Randy Myers (11)
HR - Mike Stanley (12)
July 7
Red Sox (49-36) @ Orioles (43-43)
Red Sox 4 - Orioles 3 (12 innings)
Only two games into his major league career and Freddy Sanchez is already making headlines. Sanchez had two huge hits in this game. The first one started an eighth inning rally with us down by a run that helped us take the lead a few batters later, and the second of his two big hits was what proved to be the game-winning hit in the 12th inning, an RBI single to right-center field. In even more shocking news, Tim Wakefield went seven innings and allowed just two runs on six hits and two walks :O!
WP - Mike Stanton (3-4)
LP - Roger McDowell (4-3)
SV - N/A
HR - N/A
July 8
Red Sox (50-36) @ Orioles (43-44)
Red Sox 8 - Orioles 11
The Orioles went up ten to nothing on us early, and we managed to mount a late rally by putting up seven of our eight runs in the last two innings, but unfortunately it wasn't quite enough. Freddy Sanchez had a good game in the loss, going 3-5 with three runs. Mo Vaughn, Mike Greenwell, and Mike Stanley drove in all our runs.
WP - Mike Mussina (8-4)
LP - Butch Henry (5-5)
SV - Randy Myers (12)
HR - Mike Stanley (13)
Thoughts: I'm not liking where we're sitting go into the All-Star Break. We're down ten games to the Yankees for the division and six and a half to the White Sox in the Wild Card. Hopefully we can come out of the gate hot in the second half.

Re: Red Sox Memoirs - Spiderman and The Rocket (1996 - )
Sorry I'm a little late to the party, but I believe that you have to re-sign the Hit Dog.
Yes, he's going to ask for money. However, you are Boston: YOU HAVE THE MONEY!!! He's a very good middle of the order hitter, has a swing built for Fenway, and might not end up having all the injuries that plagued his later career (that health rating looks pretty good to me!). Plus, you think the fanbase is going to let you off easy if you let the '95 AL MVP walk? Heck, he might even snag back-to-back trophies! How can you live with yourself if you do that? :D

We're actually seven million dollars over budget right now. We do have some heftyish contracts coming off the books this season (notably Gordon and Slocumb), but we also have some guys in arbitration that are gonna ask for a big, big raise (Rondell White). If I do resign him it'll be out of the free agent pool so I can see how much money I have to play with.
As of now I'm planning on letting go of (salary amount in parentheses):
RP Tom Gordon (2,000,000)
RP Heathcliff Slocumb (1,550,000)
3B Tim Naehring (1,850,000)
SP Tim Wakefield (1,200,000)
And depending on what they ask for I want to bring back (same deal as before):
INF Bret Boone (920,000)
SP Butch Henry (1,050,000)
C Joe Oliver (1,100,000)
And I'm definitely bringing back these guys, but some of them are gonna get some fat raises (same as before, *=will probably be demanding a big raise):
UTIL Wil Cordero (1,250,000) *
CF Rondell White (1,100,000) *
2B Jeff Frye (222,000) *
OF Troy O'Leary (310,000)
RP Rich Garces (146,000) *
I may actually not bring Jeff Frye back. I'm planning on handing second base to Freddy Sanchez next season, but Frye has played really well this season and I want to bring him back as a back-up middle infielder. But at the same time I'm not gonna pay him a ton of money to sit on the bench and play 2B or SS once or twice a week. Most of the other guys, especially White, are gonna get paid big. If I can afford Vaughn after that then I'll probably go for it. But he's very much in limbo at this point.

SPIDERMAN AND ROCKET UPDATE - ALL-STAR BREAK
SS/DH Nomar Garciaparra (85/95), 22 years old
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/504...enhunter1x.jpg
Nomar has fallen off his spectacular start to the season. He is still a tough out, however. He's still leading the team in batting average (though not by the margin he was before), tied for first in RBI's, third in on-base percentage, second in slugging percentage, and second in OPS. He also still ranks in the top ten in the American League in batting average. I'm hoping that sooner or later he gets on another hot streak like he was to start the season and gets his name back in the MVP race and helps us to the playoffs.
SP Roger Clemens (96), 33 years old
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/2...nhunter2vu.jpg
Clemens has also fallen off his previous pace a bit (not as much as Nomar). He's still first in the AL in wins and ERA, and second in strikeouts and third in innings pitched. I still think he's the leading candidate for the AL Cy Young award. He's currently on watch for this 200th career win, as he's at 196 career W's at this point. We're gonna need him to keep pitching like the Ace he is if we're gonna make the playoffs.

Re: Red Sox Memoirs - Spiderman and The Rocket (1996 - )
TEAM UPDATE - ALL-STAR BREAK
BATTING LINEUP
http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/4...pdatehitti.jpg
NOTE: I highlighted Larkin and Frye as the team leader in steals because they both have seven with the Red Sox.
The lineup continues to be very, very strong, and one of the best in the league. Nixon is the only one in the starting nine who isn't really hit as well as I'd like, but it's good enough, and the rest of the line-up really makes up for it. Rondell has really come into his own since joining the team, and is hitting at a .289/.333/.535/.868 pace since coming over from Montreal. We've also got Mike Greenwell looking like he's gonna break his career high single season homer total of 22, set in 1988, Vaughn looking like he's hungry for back-to-back MVP awards, Nomar looking to win Rookie of the Year, and Jeff Frye having a career year. Hopefully they can keep it up through the end of the season.
PITCHING STAFF
http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/3...pdatepitch.jpg
The starting rotation is doing much, much better than it was at the start of the season. Clemens is still pitching at an All-Star level, but now we've also got Jeff Suppan pitching well at the Major League level, Jamie Moyer and Butch Henry having respectable seasons, and Wakefield has even been pitching better lately, with a 4.89 ERA since being recalled from AAA. Garces has done just as well as I had expected and hoped in the closers role, and the rest of the 'pen has been pretty solid, for the most part anyways. I think we're in pretty good position to make a second half run at the playoffs.

Re: Red Sox Memoirs - Spiderman and The Rocket (1996 - )
I love the formatt, becoming 1 of my fav dynasties. Your lineup is very good, you should trade for a veteran pitcher since your lineup is great. Let's get you into the playoffs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was thinking about trading for a pitcher. Maybe send Nixon and some one else somewhere and give RF to Cordero. Or maybe vice versa, trade Cordero and someone for a pitcher and leave Nixon in RF. And thanks!! :)

The NL is very balanced, unlike the AL. Quite honestly I'm a little bit concerned at the lack of competitive balance in the AL. I might shake the league up after the season and move some teams from AL to NL and from division to division.
Oh, and the suggestion you had about a pitcher, ewing? Stay tuned for a while and you'll see what happened with it ;).

RED SOX ACQUIRE RADKE FROM MINNESOTA
TRADE CORDERO, WAKEFIELD, PROSPECTS
http://plunking-gomez.mlblogs.com/Radke_Windup.jpghttp://washington.nationals.mlb.com/...1/bWeRPkLF.jpg
Today the Red Sox acquired Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Brad Radke (87/94) in return for five players. The players they traded were SP Tim Wakefield (78), Jamie Brown (63/87), SS/OF/1B Wil Cordero (81/88), SP Tomo Ohka (64/88), 1B Andy Dominique (65/86). I absolutely could not believe I got this offer from them. Originally all I had put on the block was Wakefield, Brown, and Cordero, and Radke was one of the first offers that came up. I didn't think they were getting enough out of the deal, especially with the salary they were taking on, and the idea of getting Radke was too good to pass up, so I decided to toss in a couple more good prospects for good measure and to even off the deal a little. Radke is gonna miss his first start with us, but I'm not too worried about it. And I do think this is a good deal for the re-building Twin.

Gotta say I'm really enjoying this dynasty and your format. That was a terrific trade. Even to this day, Brad Radke is one of my favorite pitchers of all time since he always brought with him a resonating sense of calm leadership and had some of the best control I had ever seen. Great addition.

Clemens makes the start for our first game since the All-Star Break and pitches a gem. He throws a complete game shut out on two hits and two walks, while striking out eight batters and lowering his ERA to 2.84. Freddy Sanchez also hit the first homer of his career, an inside-the-park job in the bottom of the third inning. Nixon also had a solid game, going 2-3 with a walk and an RBI.

We manage to complete the sweep on a very well played game all-around. Jeff Suppan snaps his personal losing streak by going 7 2/3 innings and allowing just two runs on nine hits and no walks, striking out three, and El Guapo gets the save in four out save, striking out every batter he got out. Offensively Mo Vaughn went 3-4 with two RBI's, and Rondell White was 2-4 with a walk, two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base.

Thoughts: It was very good to get a sweep coming out of the gate after the All-Star break. We made up a game on the Yankees to pull within nine games, and we made up two on the Wild Card leading White Sox to pull within 4.5 games. Mo Vaughn passed Nomar on the team in batting average, hitting .342 to Nomar's .327, and is now leading the team in all of the hitting triple crown categories (BA, HR, RBI). But more exciting on the hitting front is how well Mike Greenwell has hit in his past ten games, collecting 15 hits in 38 at bats and putting forth a line of .395/.465/.789/1.254. Next up we're home for three more games against the Rangers, and then we travel to Toronto and play the Blue Jays again, where Brad Radke will make his first career Red Sox start.

Thanks very much :). I was extremely surprised when he came up when I put Wake, Cordero, and Brown on the block. Before him the best offer I had seen was Kevin Appier (89), and I was pretty sure I was gonna take that. But once I saw the Twins were offering Radke I decided to throw them a couple more prospects to even it off and take Radke. He was just too good to pass up.

BREAKING NEWS
RED SOX SIGN RONDELL WHITE TO LONG-TERM DEAL
AVOID ARBITRATION
http://www.kremchek.com/successstories/white.jpg
Today the Red Sox agreed to terms on a long-term extension with the recently acquired Rondell White. The deal covers the remainder of this season, and the following three, at 2.5 million dollars a year.
Rondell has hit very well since coming over from Montreal, and we were happy to be able to come to this deal with him, as opposed to going year-to-year in arbitration and have things be even more expensive. With as well as he's hit this season, we're hoping he receives some sort of ratings boost and can become a premier offensive center fielder in all of baseball. Originally he had wanted a no-trade clause, but I was able to get out of it by offering a little bit more money in comparison to my initial offer.

Jamie Moyer had a rough first inning in which he allowed three runs, but he settled down after that and allowed just one run the rest of the game. Overall he went six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, while also striking out seven. Rondell White had a fantastic game fresh off signing his new deal, hitting a walk-off two run homer in the bottom of the tenth inning, and going 3-6 with two runs, a homer, and five RBI's total.

Helling held us to seven hits over eight innings and the only run he allowed was in the seventh inning on a Freddy Sanchez single. Mike Stanley was our only hitter to collect more than one hit, going 2-4, and Bret Boone was our only hitter to get an extra-base hit, hitting a double in the seventh inning.

Clemens second start after the All-Star Break didn't go nearly as well as the first. Clemens last only 1 2/3 innings before giving up five runs on five hits and three walks, but fortunately the bullpen was able to hold bac the powerful Rangers offense. Shouse, Gordon, Maddux, Stanton, and Garces combined to pitch the remaining 7 1/3 innings and allowed just one run on four hits and one walk, while striking out nine and getting us the win. Mo Vaughn and Mike Greenwell each went 2-4 with two RBI's, and Trot Nixon also drove in two runs.

Thoughts: We've only lost one game since the All-Star Break and we're STILL ten games back of the Yankees and five back of the White Sox. We're gonna have to play really, really well the last 2 1/2 months of the season if we're gonna make the playoffs, and we're gonna have to hope and pray for the White Sox and/or Yankees to cool down a bit. Next we have an off day, then we have Brad Radke making his first Red Sox start on the road against the Blue Jays. We have three against the Jays, then we go on a West Coast trip in which we play four against the M's and three against the Rangers before coming home again to face the Yankees. Hopefully certain members of the offense (like Nomar whose hitting .188 in his last ten games) pick it up by the Yankee series so we can sweep or at least take two of three against them.

Brad Radke's Sox debut couldn't have gone any better if Hollywood had written a movie about it. Radke went all nine innings to get the complete game shutout, and allowed only four hits and three walks, while striking out five. I hope to see more performances like this out of Radke in the future. Offensively Nixon had a two run home run, and Nomar was 2-5 with an RBI, and Jeff Frye reached base four times in five plate appearances, going 3-4 with a walk and a run.

I guess you could say the Blue Jays exacted their revenge in this game, since this time we were on the losing end of a complete game shutout. Erik Hanson went all nine innings against us and allowed six hits and three walks, no runs, and struck out our hitters seven times. Nixon was the only hitter of ours to collect multiple hits, going 2-3 with a double. Suppan's start wasn't nearly as successful as he allowed four runs in four innings, with all four runs coming on two two-run homers by Joe Carter.

I think it's some sort of federally mandated thing that there is at least one blow out everytime we play the Blue Jays. Rondell White went 4-6 with five RBI's and is now flirting with .300, and Nixon went 2-3 with two walks to raise his batting average to a respectable .267. Nomar also seems to be getting off the schneid, as he's gotten a hit in five straight games, and gotten multiple hits in three of those five, including today's game in which he went 3-5 with a walk, two runs, a homer, and three RBI's. Moyer pitched a very good game as well, allowing three runs over seven innings on six hits and four walks, while striking out seven.

Thoughts: Hopefully Nomar's hits in five straight games, and three of five with more than one hit, is actually him breaking out of his slump and not just a blip on the slump radar. We really need his bat to be going strong the next two weeks because we've got some tough games against the AL West leading Mariners, the just-under-.500 Rangers, and the Yankees. I think that the Yankee series is make-or-break for our division hopes. If we can take two of three, or better yet sweep them, then we might still have a shot at the division. And if not then we'll probably be lucky to make the playoffs at all.
I'd also like to draw everyone's attention to the play of one Mr. Trot Nixon as of late. He's currently on a ten game hitting streak and tearing the cover off the ball, and his brought his season line up to a very respectable .267/.335/.438/.773. It's nice to see that my patience with him is paying off.

That's definitely what I'm hoping for. He walked a few more than I'd expect from a guy with a control rating of 98, but really can't complain at all overall. I noticed that with Nixon too, kinda funny how that happened. I'd still like to find someone to start in Nixon's place against lefties, since Nixon is only hitting like .230 against them, so I'm thinking about calling up Phil Clark from AAA because he's got some pretty nice ratings against lefties.

Nixon isn't a great defender, but he's solid, and I think he'll get better to the point where he'll be above-average. I was definitely already planning on lining it up so that Clemens and Radke were starting the Yankee series ;). I'll definitely be reading if you decide to.

Nomar's hitting streak comes to an end as he goes 0-5, but with some help from other members of the offense and a good start by Jeff Suppan we take the third of four games in this series. Suppan went six innings and allowed just two earned runs (four runs total) on ten hits and one walk, while striking out four. Offensively Nixon went 3-4 with two runs and a solo homer to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and raise his batting average to .276. I was skeptical of our chances of completing the sweep when we were facing Randy Johnson in the series finale, but we smacked Randy Johnson around like a Cinco de Mayo piņata. Randy made it through just 4 1/3 innings before giving up seven runs on six hits and one walk, and conversely Moyer went seven innings and allowed just three runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out three. Thoughts: A four game sweep over the Mariners puts the Mariners in second place behind the Angels by a half game, and pulls us within seven games of the suddenly reeling Yankees, and within one game of the White Sox for the Wild Card! Nomar's back to his old self, hitting .311/.367/.489/.856 with two homers and nine RBI's. Hopefully he keeps it up through the Yankee's series at least. Next up we've got the Rangers, with Henry, Clemens, and Radke scheduled to pitch. Thoughts: We didn't play particularly well going against the Rangers, but I think it's safe to attribute to me getting my pitching staff set-up for the Yankee series. Hopefully stretching my bullpen out like I did against the Rangers doesn't hurt me against the Yankees. Nixon is really killing the ball right now, hitting .441/.513/.735/1.248 in his last ten games, and has raised his season line to a very solid .281/.348/.456/.804. Between Nixon, Nomar, Sanchez, Suppan, and Radke I think we have an excellent core of players for the next several years.

Thoughts: What. A. Series. Clemens and Radke made me look like geniuses for lining them up to start against the Yankees, and Suppan gave us a great outing as well. The sweep leaves us four games back of the Yankees in the AL East, and it helped us take a one game lead over the White Sox, against whom we play our next four games against at home. Hopefully we can keep the ball rolling against the White Sox and pad our Wild Card lead and take more steps towards taking the division lead. We also have Barry Larkin returning from his broken finger in less than a week, which can only help. Freddy Sanchez has played extremely well in his place, but unfortunately I'm probably gonna have to send him back down to AAA once Larkin is healthy again.

Phil Clark collected two hits again, but Wilson Alvarez did a fantastic job of shutting down our line-up. Alvarez went all nine innings without allowing a run on six hits and one walk, and striking out nine. Butch Henry wasn't nearly as effective as he allowed seven runs (six earned) in 5 2/3 innings on nine hits and a walk. Hopefully we can win the next two games of this series and walk away with a split.

Some late inning errors and a poor performance out of Garces did us in this time. We were leading by one going into the ninth inning, but Garces gave up three runs in the inning (four total) to give up the lead. The biggest hit we got was a three-run homer by Trot Nixon. This was a retardedly well pitched game on both ends. The starters, Brad Radke and Kevin Tapani, combined to go 22 innings and allow four runs (3 earned) on ten hits and two walks, and strike out 14. Thoughts: Well we went back down a game in the Wild Card after losing three of four to the Chisox, but we're still only 4.5 back of the Yankees in the East. The offense is really reeling right now. Vaughn is hitting .211 in his last 10 games with an OPS under .600, Nomar is hitting under .200 in his last 10 with an OPS under .500, Boone is hitting under .150 with an OPS barely above .450, and Mike Stanley is hitting .222 with an OPS of .599 in his last ten. The only guys hitting right now are Phil Clark (.967 OPS since his call-up), Rondell White (.318/.375/.500/.875 in his last ten), and Freddy Sanchez (.333 batting average in his last ten). Hopefully the offense picks it back up soon, because our pitching staff has been too hit or miss for me to feel confident in it for long stretches of time.
Brad Radke has just been filthy since coming over from Minny. His stats with us:

Jamie Moyer failed to make it out of the fourth inning before allowing seven runs, but a lot of offense helps us win the game anyways. Nomar went 3-4 with a walk, three runs, and four RBI's, and Mo Vaughn hit his first home run in what seems like forever. Jeff Frye also went 4-5 with three runs, but Rondell White, on the other hand, went 0-5 with four strikeouts. John Doherty let up two runs in the ninth and put the tying run at the plate to make it interesting at the end, but Garces came in and shut the door to earn his 18th save of the season.

Thoughts: We take two of three from Texas and make up another game and a half on the Yankees to sit back exactly three games, and we make up a game on the White Sox to sit half a game back. Looking ahead at the calendar we play the Yankees six more times before the end of the season, and we finish the season with three games on the road against the White Sox. Just think about the implications that series could have! Next we play four games on the road against the Twins, with Clemens going for win #200 of his career in the first game of the series. It should be an excellent opportunity for us to take the lead in either the Wild Card or the Division, since the Twins are only 46-68 and we've got Clemens, Radke, Suppan, and Moyer all going against them. Larkin will also make his return to the lineup in the first game against the Twins. Instead of sending Sanchez back to AAA I've decided to sit Boone and start Sanchez at third since he does have some proficiency there and Boone hasn't been hitting. Boone will, however, be starting at second base for the duration of the Twins series as Jeff Frye will be sitting out with a bruised ankle.

BREAKING NEWS
Following this game against the Twins Mo Vaughn and Rondell White were diagnosed with injuries. White will miss the next five games with a slight forearm strain, and Vaughn will approximately two weeks with a strained knee. Reggie Jefferson is likely to play in place of Vaughn, and Troy O'Leary will play in place of White.
Thoughts: The four game sweep of the Twins still leaves us three back of the Yankees for the division. However we have claimed a 2 1/2 game lead over the White Sox in the Wild Card standings. Hopefully we can keep up playing well, in spite of some injuries we've suffered, though Greenwell is returning in a couple days, and that will help with the extended absense of Vaughn. The pitching staff is the thing that is really carrying us right now, which is not something I thought I'd find myself saying based on the performance of it earlier in the season.
Here are the new standings and our schedule for the remainder of August:

It's not very often that anyone is going to hold this vaunted Cleveland offense to only one run, and I'd say it's even less often that your #5 starter is going to do that. But that's what happened here, as Butch Henry pitched a gem, going eight innings and allowing just one run on six hits and two walks, while striking out eight batters. Troy O'Leary supplied all the offense, as he hit a solo homer in the first inning to put us up 1-0, and then got what proved to be the game-winning run on a single in the sixth inning.

Thoughts: I can't believe we just completed a four game sweep over the team with the best record in baseball. We are absolutely on fire right now. We're riding an eight game winning streak and we're 15-5 in our last twenty games going into the Yankee series, and best of all, we're only a half game back of the division lead, and we're now five up in the Wild Card. And we've got both Greenwell and Rondell White returning in the Yankee series. We are poised to take the division lead right now.
I kind of feel bad pushing Brad to throw a complete game almost every time he's out there, but hes been incredibly economic in terms of pitches with them. The only game he's been with us in which he's thrown more than 111 pitches was his 12 inning complete game, and in that one he threw 135. He's only averaging about 104 pitches per start since coming over to Boston from Minnesota. Hopefully he keeps it up because he has been extremely integral in this run we've gone on.

And Scott Kamieniecki shuts us down for the nth time this season, this time going all nine innings and allowing just the one run on seven hits while striking out two. Thoughts: I am so frustrated and in disbelief that we lost that series with Clemens pitching the rubber game against a journeyman five starter I can barely write this. We're still only 1.5 back of the Yankees in the division and five up on the White Sox in the Wild Card, but it's still frustrating because I really thought we were gonna take the division lead heading into that series. Next up we've got a much needed off day before heading home for three games against the Twins. Vaughn and Sanchez will both be returning to the lineup during the following series against the Orioles.
Even in spite of Clemens' recent struggles I think he's still in good position to win the AL Cy Young, based on his place in some the league leaders. But hopefully he does turn it around sooner rather than later because we really need him to be pitching well going down the stretch. Currently he's got an ERA of 4.05 in his last ten starts and hasn't won a start since July 30th against the Yankees.

Radke was uncharacteristically ineffective in this start, lasting just 3 2/3 innings before giving up five runs and getting pulled from the game, but three homers and an excellent performance by John Doherty helped us pull out the win anyways. Another one bites the dust. This time it's our catcher Mike Stanley going down for about 2 1/2 weeks with a sprained finger. He was only hitting .162 at the time of his injury (though his OPS was near .700) so it may not be a horrible thing for him to get some rest and for us to actually get some production out of catcher. We'll be calling up the 26 year old Scott Hatteberg to bat ninth and start at catcher in his place.

Thoughts: We've extended our AL Wild Card lead to seven games over the ChiSox and pulled with a half game of the Yankees for the AL East. We're playing the Orioles and Tigers before we play our last three games of the season against the Yankees, in which is sure to be a huge series. As of now Radke, Suppan, and Moyer are scheduled to pitch that series, but I think I'll probably be able to start Clemens, Radke, and Suppan instead. Injuries are really decimating our line-up, but fortunately not our W-L record. Regardless, Sanchez returns to the lineup for the first game against the Orioles, and Vaughn will be back in the lineup for the last game against them.

He got a great deal of help from Rondell White, who went 2-5 with a homer and three RBI's, and Freddy Sanchez who homered and scored twice.

Another solid start by Radke is in the books. This time out he goes seven innings and allows four runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out four. The story in this one, however, was definitely the offense. Nomar doubled and tripled, while Greenwell drove in four runs, homered, and scored twice, and Frye and Hatteberg both drove in two runs a piece.

Between Jeff Suppan throwing like crap and David Wells shutting us down we really didn't have a chance. David Wells went 7 2/3 innings and allowed only two runs to us while striking out five, and in comparison Suppan lasted only four innings before allowing four runs on five hits. Offensively we got a solo homer from Larkin and an RBI single from Garciaparra, but were stifled otherwise.

Thoughts: One half game up in the AL East! Next up we've got three games at home against the dismal Tigers, which gives us an excellent opportunity to build upon that lead, before we head to New York and play the Yankees for the last time all season. I'm going to do my best to line up Clemens, Radke, and Suppan for the Yankee series (and I should be able to with the off day we're gonna have) because this series is going to have huge implications for if we're getting into the playoffs as the Wild Card or division champ, and I want my horses going with something like that on the line.
