RED SOX DRAFT REVIEW 1996
ROUND #1, #26 OVERALL
SP JUNIOR HERNDON (51/92), 17 YEARS OLD
http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/a...nHunter_11.jpg
Unfortunately we didn't get any of the guys we targeted, and apparently we were being way too hopeful as most of them were taken in the top ten picks of the draft. Regardless though, we do like our first round pick Herndon. He's not a health concern, and he has very good vitals, especially at such a young age. It's also good to see that both of his pitches are very close in terms of quality and development. The one thing that does worry me about him, though, is the lack of pitches. All he's got is a fastball and a curveball, and if one's off they both might as well be off.
ROUND #2, #52 OVERALL
SP LUKE PROKOPEC (54/87), 18 YEARS OLD
I actually almost like Luke better than our first rounder Herndon. His endurance isn't quite what you'd expect from a guy whose supposed to go six or seven innings, but that should improve as he gets innings in the minors. Other than that his vitals look really nice, very good control and power, and solid movement. His fastball and curve are both very nice pitches, with his change a bit behind but still capable of becoming a good third pitch. I have really high hopes for this guy and I think he'll be an ace down the road.
ROUND #3, #82 OVERALL
RF CLIFF KALINE (52/83), 17 YEARS OLD
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/7...nhunter4us.jpg
Yeah, I'm not gonna lie, I don't remember why I took this guy over Jason Bay, who was also available at our pick. He's not a bad prospect, but there were definitely better ways for me to spend this pick. He looks like he'll be a decent hitter with a strong arm and solid glove, but I really don't expect him to become anything more than a fourth outfielder.
ROUND #4, #110 OVERALL
SS ERICK ALMONTE (52/79), 18 YEARS OLD
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/9...enhunter5k.jpg
Once it gets down to this point in the draft I'm basically just looking for guys with good health that might be able to stay healthy enough to develop into something. I think Almonte was a solid pick though. Looks like he stands a good chance of turning into a good contact-OBP guy. His glove doesn't look like much now, but I expect that he'll get better and turn into a pretty solid if not better fielder.
ROUND #5, #138 OVERALL
1B JOSH PHELPS (53/78), 18 YEARS OLD
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/3...enhunter6l.jpg
I'm actually really happy with this pick. I think Phelps can turn into a very useful player. He's not much of an injury risk, and he's got excellent power. His glove probably isn't good enough to stay at first, though he does have a good arm so maybe a move to a corner outfield spot is in store for him. I really like his bat, excellent power, as I said before, and it also seems like he'll have pretty good contact and a good eye.
ROUND #6, #166 OVERALL
2B GIULIANO CARBIA (52/72), 20 YEARS OLD
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/7...eenhunter7.jpg
Yeah, really not much hope for this kid. Maybe he'll develop into a decent defensive sub, but I'd say that's his ceiling.

Royals (18-38) @ Red Sox (31-25)
Royals 7 - Red Sox 3
Sele got a little roughed up in his first major league start of the season, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing five runs on nine hits and four walks. Barry Larkin had a solid game in his return from injury, going 1-4 with a walk and a run. I do have to say though, it is a little humiliating when a guy who was previously 0-8 gets the first win of his season against you.

Very good game for Henry in terms of not allowing runs, very poor game for Henry in not giving up a metric ****ton of hits, but fortunately that doesn't matter unless they cross the plate. Butch went eight innings and allowed only one run, but he gave up TEN hits and two walks and struck out three. It's a small miracle we were able to win inspite of him giving up that many hits, especially when the offense didn't exactly kill the ball in this game. Mo Vaughn drove in all our runs on a homer and a single.

We won this on a well pitched game by Clemens. Clemens went all nine innings allowing only three runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out five. The two guys coming off injury right, Nomar and Larkin, have struggled a bit since returning from their injuries. Nomar is a mere 3-15 since returning to the lineup, while Larkin is only 1-12. We really need them to start hitting again if we're gonna really get back into the playoff race and stay in it.

What a fantastic game. Wil Cordero hits a three-run homer in the bottom of the tenth for us to win it, and Jeff Suppan goes seven innings and allows only two runs on five hits and a walk. Nomar and Larkin both went 1-4 with a walk, and Mike Stanley went 3-4 with a run.
WP - Mike Maddux (4-1)
LP - Mike Magnante (0-3)

Thoughts: It was great to take three of four. However due to the Yankees absolutely destroying everything and everyone right now and in the middle of a six game winning streak, we still sit six games back of first in the division, and four back of the White Sox for the Wild Card. We really need Nomar and Larkin to start hitting like they were before they got injured. Wil Cordero's overall and peak also just underwent a huge change, going from 70-something/80-something to 85/92. Maybe since Naehring is just not hitting anymore I'll start getting him and Boone more time at third, and throw him at 1B after the season if I don't resign Vaughn.

Definitely Moyer's best start of the season. He went the first 8 2/3 innings and allowed just two runs on six hits and struck out six. Offensively Nomar collected two hits and two RBI's, his first multi-hit game since his injury. Nixon and Frye also collected two hits and an RBI a piece out of the eight and nine holes in the lineup.

Wowza, what a game! We scored at least one run in every inning but the second inning and the eighth inning to keep ourselves in the game. Which was a little surprising with Mussina on the mound, but we managed to get to him for five runs in fives innings. We entered the ninth trailing by a run, but Nomar singled to lead off the inning, and then Mo hit a two-run homer for the very next batter to let us walk off with the win. The homer was Mo's second of the game, and the RBI's were his 4th and 5th of the game. Nomar also had an excellent game, going 4-5 with three runs.

Excellent game out of the offense. Mo Vaughn hit his third homer in his last two games, and Bret Boone well a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Rondell White also hit a two run homer in his only at bat of the game, a pinch hitting appearance. Although the offense in this game was plentiful, Butch Henry also tossed a solid seven innings, allowing only four runs on seven hits.

Thoughts: We're playing extremely well right now, as we've won our last six games in a row, but we're still making up minimal ground in the standings. We still sit five back of the Yankees for the divisional lead, and four back of the ChiSox for the Wild Card lead. And speaking of the White Sox, our next series is against them. We play them for three games in Chicago after an off day on the 11th. It's a huge series for us, and fortunately we've got our top three of Clemens, Suppan, and Moyer going. Hopefully we can keep playing well and pick up a game or two in the standings on them.
Also, just a quick re-visitation of the White-Canseco trade earlier in the season, and I'd say it looks fair right now:

Very, very frustrating game. Wilson Alvarez really shut down our offense, going eight innings and allowing only two runs (both homers), on four hits and no walks and striking out six. Vaughn, Cordero, and Frye were the only Red Sox hitters with hits. Clemens got his second loss of the season (first since mid-April), but really didn't pitch too badly. He went five innings and allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out six.

I think Jeff Suppan might be trying to wrestle the American League Rookie of the Year award away from Nomar with the way he's been pitching since I called him up. This time out he went seven innings and allowed just two runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out a career high five batters. Nomar homered in this game, while Barry Larkin doubled in a run.

Unlike the first two games of the series, this game was not close at all. Rondell White, Wil Cordero, and Bret Boone were the main culprits at the plate, combining to go 8-15 with seven runs, four homers, and 10 RBI's. Jamie Moyer also pitched excellently, however, going all nine innings for the complete game, and allowing just one run on six hits and a walk, while striking out six.

Thoughts: Great series against the White Sox. We're still six back in the division, but now we're only three back in the Wild Card. We're thinking about doing a lot of things with the lineup right now. Naehring's batting average just dipped below .300 for the first time all season, and I'm taking that as a sign that it's time to find someone else to play third base. Trot Nixon still isn't pulling his weight in the line-up either. With Wil Cordero and Bret Boone both absolutely killing the ball I think they'll be taking Naehring and Nixon's places in the lineup very soon. I'm gonna give Nixon until the Yankee series at the end of the month to start hitting, but if that doesn't happen I'm sending him to AAA and turning RF over to Cordero on a full-time basis. Naehring, however, isn't so lucky, as I'm pulling him out of the lineup for Bret Boone immediately.

should use the trade approval thread ;)
I thought about it at the time, lol. Doesn't really matter because Larkin couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with a nuclear bomb right now, and Saberhagen looks like Cy Young.

I'm beginning to think that the Aaron Sele experiment has run it's course. This time out he allowed six runs in 4+ innings to raise his ERA to 12.34 (16 runs in 11.2 IP since his call-up). Barry Larkin, shockingly enough, got a hit in this game, a homer in the ninth inning. Trot Nixon also went 2-4 with an RBI in a losing effort.

Butch Henry actually pitched a decent in game in spite of the loss. He went 6 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on ten hits. Again, not great, but solid. The big problem was the offense. We had plenty of opportunities to put runs on the board (leaving the bases loaded in the ninth inning, for example), but failed to do anything with these opportunities. Boone continued his hot hitting going 2-4 with a run and an RBI.

Well we managed to avoid getting swept, due in large part to a brilliant pitching effort by Roger Clemens, who went seven innings and allowed two runs on two hits and a walk, and struck out eight. Barry Larkin also busted out of his slump a little, going 2-4 with a run driven in. Boone just keeps killing the baseball, going 2-4 and getting another home run, and two runs and two RBI's.

Thoughts: A rough series puts us seven back in the division race, but we pulled to within two games of the White Sox for the Wild Card lead. I've officially decided to put the kibosh on the Aaron Sele experiment. His ERA is over 12, and Wakefield's ERA is a microscopic 1.02 in three starts at AAA. It's very disappointing to see Nomar's batting average drop 40 points since his injury as well, but hopefully he can bust out of his slump soon and get back into the .360-.370 range.

Just another day at work for Jeff Suppan, going seven innings and allowing only one run on seven hits and five walks. Mo Vaughn was a stud at the plate, going 4-4 with three runs, two homers, and three RBI's. Larkin also continued to bust out of his slump, going 2-5 with a homer, two runs, and a steal. Wakefield pitched pretty well in his first start since his stint in the minors. Thoughts: We're only a game back of the White Sox in the Wild Card race! We're still six back of the Yankees in the division, but I'll take what I can get. Mo Vaughn is quickly vaulting himself into MVP discussion with his play of late. In his last ten games he's hitting .457/.513/.886 with four homers and nine RBI's. He's making it really hard not to resign him right now. Before I was pretty sure I wasn't going to, because we're already seven million dollars over budget, but now I'm going to have to look into it.
I probably wouldn't re-sign him, personally. I think he's playing way over his head right now and will probably come back to earth before the season is over.
This. He is just going to cost more money. He is not that good at getting on base, so I wouldn't resign him. Just hope he hits well for the duration of his stay.. Dude, they need to make it so you get compensation picks in Mogul, so it is easier to let such players go. But of course, then they would probably also have to add more rounds to the draft..
