Red Sox 4 - Angels 1
Larkin's Red Sox debut was an ugly one. The recently acquired star shortstop went 0-5 with two strikeouts. The offense was a little stagnant throughout the whole game, and the biggest hit of the game came in the sixth when Nomar hit his ninth homer of the season to drive in two runs (tying him for the team lead in homers). The game was pitched brilliantly, however. Clemens went the first six innings and gave up only one run on five hits and two walks, while striking out four, and the two relievers, Slocumb and Gordon, combined to go three innings of scoreless ball on three hits and one walk. Even the opposing start Langston only allowed two runs in seven innings. Jeff Suppan makes his first major league start in the next game.

Jeff Suppan pitched a brilliant game in his first major league start, going six innings and allowing one run on three hits and six walks, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to win. Tom Gordon allowed them to tie it in the bottom of the ninth, then gave up a walkoff home run to Garrett Anderson in the bottom of tenth to give up the game. Nomar had a good game at the plate, going 3-5 and falling a home run short of the cycle. Barry Larkin also collected the first hits of his Red Sox career, going 2-5 with a run.

This game was extremely frustrating. Jamie Moyer pitched very well (6 IP, 7 H, 2 BB, 1 ER, 4 K), but two errors led to two unearned runs that effectively did us in. All of our runs came via the longball, with Larkin leading off the game with his first career Red Sox home run and first home run of the season overall, as well as two solo shots by Mo Vaughn.

I honestly think Wakefield is trying to pitch himself out of the rotation. This time out he allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings and his ERA swelled to 7.04. The recent acquisitions were the only ones to perform in this one, with Barry Larkin going 2-4 with two runs, and Rondell White going 1-4 with a two run homer. Nomar also went 2-4 with an RBI.

Thoughts: That series was extremely frustrating. We were a couple errors and shoddy bullpen performances away from getting out of California winning three out of four in that series, but as it happened we leave there losing three of the four instead. Our recent acquisition of Rondell White isn't working out quite as well as we've hoped so far (.712 OPS in 40 AB's), but by no means are we considering pulling him from the lineup anytime soon. Nixon also isn't hitting well (.399 OPS in 38 AB's), so I'm thinking I might have brought him up too soon. But I'm gonna leave him in the lineup a few more weeks and if he doesn't pick it up I'll re-evaluate later. Next up we're home against the Yankees, and with us sitting three games back of them for the division lead it's gonna be a big series.

Dwight Gooden totally owned us in this game. The only two runs he gave up were in his final inning of work. Overall he went 7 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits and a walk, striking out six. Butch Henry got roughed up on the other end, allowing six runs on ten hits in 5 1/3 innings. Nomar and Rondell had a hit and an RBI each.

The Rocket collected his major-league leading ninth win in this game after pitching seven innings of shut out baseball, giving up only two hits, while walking three and striking out seven. This win was huge. We take two of three in the series and manage to make up a game in the standings. It was also a game of firsts, as Jeff Suppan collected his first career win in a very well pitched game (7 IP, 5 H, 0 BB, 2 ER, 3 K), and Trot Nixon got his first career home run. Nomar Garciaparra went 2-3 with a walk and two RBI's, and Larkin was 2-3 with a walk and a run.

Thoughts: That series was really big for us. We managed to make up a game in the standings, and we've got some creampuffs coming up. The Yankees also face off with the White Sox, the team we're chasing for the Wild Card, so with those two beating up on each other we're in great position to make up some ground in the division and wild card races. Barry Larkin also suffered a minor foot fracture in the last game against the Yankees and will miss 11 games. In light of the injury we converted from a 13 man bullpen back to a 12 man bullpen, sending down Stan Belinda for Troy O'Leary.

Blue Jays (22-26) @ Red Sox (27-20)
Blue Jays 8 - Red Sox 7 (12 innings)
Tom Gordon may have finally pitched himself out of the closers role in this game. We were leading by a run going into the top of the ninth inning, and Gordon gives up a two run homer to Shawn Green with two outs for the Jays to take the lead. We managed to tie it in the bottom of the inning, but ultimately the Jays managed to win the game in 12 innings. Vaughn was easily the player of the game, going 2-3 with three walks, two runs, a homer, and four RBI's. Nomar also pitched in with three hits, a walk, a run and a steal, and increased his season batting average to .388, good for second in the American League.

Neither of the starters, Halladay and Wakefield, in this game made it past the fourth inning, combining to give up ten runs in 7 2/3 innings. We managed to rough Viola up pretty badly in the last game of this series. We got nine runs and eights hits off him in only four innings of work, which proved to be more than enough for us to get a win. The biggest blow of the game came in the fifth, when Mike Greenwell homered with the bases loaded to put us up 10-1 and basically put the game out of reach for the Jays. Clemens also pitched quite well, allowing just one run on four hits and four walks over six innings. Jeff Frye had a great game, going 4-5 with three runs, two homers, and three RBI's. Thoughts: Well so much for being able to make up some ground on the Yankees and/or White Sox since we were playing some creampuffs. We did make up a game on the White Sox, but apparently the Blue Jays didn't appreciate being called creampuffs and pulled themselves further into the playoff race. Next up we're in Detroit, against whom we're 5-4 this season, with Suppan, Moyer, and Wakefield scheduled to pitch.
I also wanted to share with you all the monster season Manny Ramirez is having:
The closest to him in homers is Cecil Fielder with 17, RBI's is his own teammate Albert Belle with 56, and OPS is Rafael Palmeiro who he leads by nearly 100 points! His slugging percentage is only one point lower than my team OPS! The only triple crown stat he's not leading in is batting average (which is led by Nomar with a .390 batting average), and if not for him and his monster season Nomar might be the leading contender for the MVP award. But as it is it would take a drop-off of epic proportions for Manny to not win the MVP this season.
BREAKING NEWS
Nomar will miss the next six games with a twisted ankle. This injury really sucks because the rest of the lineup has been struggling a little lately. Fortunately we're not playing the Yankees or anything huge like that, plus we have an off day after the series with the Tigers to let him recover. With him not in the lineup Bret Boone will be DHing and batting sixth, with everyone ahead of him simply moving up a spot.

On a normal day seven runs is probably more than enough for us to win, but unfortunately this was far from a normal day. Nomar's bat being out of the lineup visibly hurt us in this game. There were multiple times when his replacement, Bret Boone, came up with men on base and failed to drive them. Even in the top of the ninth, Boone came up with two men on and no out and he walked. Normally I wouldn't complain about that, but even a sac fly in that situation is better than a walk. Wakefield also continues his struggles by allowing five runs in five innings this time out. If I had a better alternative to him I'd put him in immediately, but unfortunately I don't.

Thoughts: We are really falling out of the playoff race at an alarming rate right now. We've gone from the AL East lead to five game back and barely pushing .500 in about two or three weeks. Hopefully once we get everyone back and healthy things will turn around. Rondell White has been one of the only things keeping us above water lately, as in his last ten games he's hitting .275/.356/.750 with five homers and 12 RBI's (screenshot below). We also really need to find something to do about the pitching staff. Clemens, Suppan, and Moyer have been reliable lately (until Moyer's last start), but I haven't gotten anything out of Wakefield all season, and Suppan can't possibly keep pitching as well as he has this consistently for the rest of the season. I'll be seeing what's out there for trade in the coming months.

RED SOX ANNOUNCE ROSTER CHANGES
STARTER WAKEFIELD AMONG THOSE SENT DOWN
http://blog.masslive.com/sports_impa...ld-red-sox.jpg
Our list of roster changes is as follows:
Tim Wakefield demoted to AAA, Aaron Sele called up to #4 started in his place
Hideki Okajima demoted to AAA, Brian Shouse called up to MR in his place
Rich Garces promoted to CL, Tom Gordon demoted to MR
I know in the previous post I said that I didn't have anyone better than Wakefield to replace him, but then I figured no one could possibly do as bad or worse than he was doing, so I decided to send him down, at least temporarily. If he does well in AAAthere's a good chance he'll get called back up to either the bullpen or starting rotation (particularly if Sele, Henry, or Suppan struggle). Also Okajima was getting smacked around a little in the bigs, and Brian Shouse had an ERA just below 2.00 in AAA, so that was an easy call. And the last move is as simple as the fact that Tom Gordon has had an ERA north of 6.00 basically all season, and Garces has been quite effective in his limited major-league experience, so I decided to give him a shot at the closers role.

Okay, I may just have made an error. I deleted all my uploaded images from imageshack because I was having a hard time uploading more. And I noticed after I did that the screenshot of Rondell White's last ten games disappeared (I fixed it already), and I'm pretty sure it's because I deleted it. I'm hoping other images won't start disappearing (they haven't yet), because I don't have them saved anymore. But if they do that's the reason. I think the Rondell White one may have just disappeared because it had only been uploaded a half hour or so before I deleted them all from my imageshack account, so hopefully the others won't disappear because they've been up there for a while already. But if they do you know why. It won't affect anyone whose already been reading up to this point, but for anyone who latches on going forward you may be a little confused about that. So yeah, that's all, back to your originally scheduled program.

SPIDERMAN AND ROCKET UPDATE - MAY
SS/DH Nomar Garciaparra (80/92), 22 years old
http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/915...nhunter4fw.jpg
Nomar just keeps raking. He's leading the team in every basic offensive stat except home runs. Additionally, he's leading the team in a variety of more advanced, sabrmetric stats including OPS, isolated power, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and runs created per nine innings. He's easily the run-away winner of AL Rookie of the Year right now, and if not for Manny's absolutely otherworldly performance at the plate in Cleveland he'd be a good pick for MVP as well.
SP Roger Clemens (96), 33 years old
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/7...enhunter3m.jpg
Clemens has basically been one of the only things keeping us above water this season. The offense has been consistently good, but Clemens has been the only reliable pitcher all season (until Suppan came up, and it's unreasonable to expect that to continue from a rookie, especially since his peripherals aren't too hot right now). He's leading the team in just about every starting pitcher stat there is besides most losses. He's the easy front-runner for AL Cy Young right now too, and he may even be a solid contender for MVP.
TEAM UPDATE - APRIL
BATTING LINEUPhttp://img195.imageshack.us/img195/7...nhunter1ky.jpg
NOTE: I highlighted Nomar as the team leader in runs and steals in spite of there being players with higher totals because those were players that I traded for and the majority of those numbers were collected with other teams.
The lineup has continued to be consistently very good throughout the season. Some players have fallen off their originally meteoric pace, Naehring and Greenwell for example, but are still performing very well. The team MVP at the plate has easily been Nomar. As I mentioned in the post before he's leading the team in just about every offensive category except home runs, and even there he's only three off tying Vaughn. Nixon still isn't performing particularly well, but I'm being patient and I'm gonna give him until around the All-Star Break to hit at a respectable level. Naehring's performance has fallen precipitously as well, but I'm also gonna give him until the All-Star Break to right the ship, and if he doesn't by then we'll shuffle the infield around and possibly play Boone at shortstop.
PITCHING STAFFhttp://img43.imageshack.us/img43/312...enhunter2s.jpg
The pitching staff hasn't been nearly as good or consistent as the lineup. Clemens is the only one in the starting rotation whose been good (or in his case, mind-bogglingly dominant) all season. Moyer had a run of a few good starts, until his last start when he got completely destroyed. I do expect him to pitch a little better and put up a 4.30-4.50 ERA by the end of the season, which is perfectly okay with me. Suppan has been excellent in his first three starts, but as I've said before it would be foolish and unrealistic to expect him to keep up his current level of performance when he's still only a rookie, and when he's average a strikeout once every (roughly) three innings. I do think it's realistic to expect a high 3.00 or low to mid 4.00 ERA from him though. If we can get that from Moyer and Suppan and Clemens continues to be dominant, and we can get SOMETHING (ANYTHING) out of the last two spots that should leave us in good position to make the playoffs. Aside from Gordon the bullpen has been solid overall, and I do think Garces will do a good job as the closer. And if he doesn't I'll move him back out of the role and either put Slocumb in it, or put Gordon back in it if he stops throwing meatballs every other pitch.
Okay, I did notice some of the older pictures are starting to disappear. It sucks, but there's nothing I can do about it, and it shouldn't really affect things going forward anyways.
So when ya trading Roger to Toronto :p

Clemens certainly didn't pitch his best in this game (5.1 IP, 5 H, 5 BB, 5 ER, 7 K), but with the production from the offense he didn't need to. One of the things I saw in this game that I found very encouraging was how well Nixon hit, going 3-5 with a homer, two doubles, and three RBI's. I'm hoping it's a sign that he's turning things around and he's gonna start hitting at a respectable level. Mike Greenwell also had an excellent game, going 2-5 with two homers and five RBI's. Tom Gordon also pitched well in his first appearance since being demoted from the closers role, going 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

Another display put on by the offense, and another fantastic outing by the young Suppan. Red Sox (31-24) @ Blue Jays (25-31)
Red Sox 5 - Blue Jays 6 (10 innings)
Nomar goes 1-4 with a walk and a run in his return to the lineup, but we still lose. We managed to tie the game in the top of 8th with a bases loaded double by Mike Stanley, and send it to extras. But they won in the tenth on a squeeze play with men on the corners that we couldn't cover.
WP - Bill Risley (4-2)
LP - Steve Ontiveros (0-2)

Thoughts
We're finally healthy again! Larkin and Nomar are both back in the lineup, which can only bode well for an offense that played well this series. Boone is definitely gonna get some more playing time going forward as well, since he's killed the ball since joining us (HR, 7 RBI's, 1.021 OPS). It shouldn't be too hard to fit him in since Naehring and Frye aren't the most durable of players and could use more days off than I've been giving them. Next up we've got the draft, the Royals, and the Orioles.
