Jim Thorpe was a stud

Gained nationwide attention for the first time in 1911. As a running back, defensive back, placekicker, and punter for his school's football team, Thorpe scored all of his team's points—four field goals and a touchdown—in an 18–15 upset of Harvard. His team finished the season 11–1.


Won 2 gold medals in 1912 Olympics:

  • 3rd in pole vault
  • 4th in javelin
  • 1st in 1500m

Also placed fourth in the high jump and took seventh place in the long jump


Won the 1912 inter-collegiate ballroom dancing championship.

Awarded All-American honors in both 1911 and 1912 for college football.

Played pro baseball: 99 OPS+, but his final 4 years were his best before he moved onto pro football, where he helped found pro football, played many positions including TB, was the first commissioner, and made the Hall of Fame (both college and pro versions).

Played basketball too.

Most people would like to leave something for their children/family...

The thing about Jim Thorpe...He won a bunch of Olympic medals but they were taken away when it was discovered that he had played professional baseball a few years earlier.

Well, in Thorpe's case, he ran out well before his death. Being aging, in poor health, and not knowing where your next meal is coming from is not a good combo.

I'm with this. I've told my mom that it is totally inappropriate for her to ever think anything along the lines of "If I take this vacation that's taking inheritance away from my kids". You earned it mom, you enjoy it.
