I'm a lifelong M's fan, and there is no way that Bret Boone belongs in the HOF. He had 3 great years (01,02,03) in a 14 year career. High SO with mediocre BA & OBP. Decent glove. A solid player, but not an HOF'er.

Grich and Boone have a lot of similarities, but most of them are superficial. The big differences between them are that Boone had a very small edge in power; Grich walked a lot more, giving him a huge edge in OBP; Grich had far more good years, and never really had a bad year; and Grich compiled his numbers in an era that was far less favorable to hitters.
Adding it all up, Grich was a far better player than Boone. I'm not convinced that Grich deserves to be in the HoF, or even to get serious consideration, but he has at least some case. Boone doesn't.
Boone has a career wOBA of .331. A league-average hitter has a wOBA ~.325-.335. For his whole career, Boone was an average hitter. He also had a low wRC+ total of 101. For comparison, Grich had a career wOBA of .359 and a career wRC+ total of 131. Another comparison, to my favorite player of all-time and who is, in not just my opinion, an actual borderline Hall of Famer, had a career wOBA of .376 and a career wRC+ total of 133.
I know you dislike sabermetrics, Metsguy, but you can't just create a post and state your opinion as fact when your opinion is wrong. You should at least check out more advanced stats, and not just traditional ones, before you claim that some player is similar to another player.
Believe it or not, I've never heard of Bobby Grich before today. That's what happens when you don't care about baseball until 2003 and don't have any reason to look up Orioles or Angels histories.
MG doesn't like his players getting on base, I guess.
Aaron Boone is a HOF Red Sox killer.
Bret Boone isn't in any HOF.
How about for random burst of power hall of fame?
It also includes Brady Anderson
The way I see it is, if you just stand there and take pitches to try and walk, you're missing chances at getting hits.
and missing chances at double plays, and less likly to swing at a ball and strike out, less likely to kill a rally, less likely to get on base therefore scoring a run.
Just when I thought u had started to grow up MG... u put this thread up :( guess my sig has to stay in tact
That's hilarious. I usually don't like to jump in on MG-bash-athon threads, but you need to analyze your position here. You can't go on 'gut' or feelings.
I would like you to be in the batter's box while Randy Johnson was in his rookie year, throwing more fastballs are your head and feet that anywhere over the plate, and explain that you are swinging at those for fear of 'missing out on getting hits.'
That would work if everything was in the strike zone, or if making random contact was anything better than a 25% chance at a hit.
One thing to note - which is better, a single or a walk?
You can single on the first pitch. Walk means at least 4 pitches. With a walk, you've tired out the pitcher more, in most cases.
The only advantage of the single is that it might have scored a guy from 2nd. If the bases are loaded, or empty, a walk is arguably better than a single.
I actualy agree with AOW 100% on the walk over Hit. I would BY FAR take a walk with the bases loded. no questions asked... i dont care if the pitcher is behind me... its a guarentee run!!! plis a 15-20% chance of another run!!!
It's all situational. In most cases, a hit is better than a walk. But, of course, a walk is better than an out like 98% of the time.
Nevermind that metsguy is ridiculously inconsistent here. He hated Adam Dunn and argued that Juan Pierre was better but then suddenly switched to liking Adam Dunn because he walks and hits home runs and, if I recall correctly, complained that more people here and in real life didn't have Adam Dunn somewhere on their MVP ballot. This is because he "doesn't care for defense", either. Of course, it really doesn't matter what metsguy "cares for" because what he "cares for" doesn't determine what players are actually better. I don't care if you or anybody likes Bret Boone more than Bobby Grich and thinks Bret Boone is cooler...but don't turn that into "Bret Boone is just as good as Bobby Grich" because that's flat out false and stupid.
If you don't take walks, you're missing the chance to be good at scoring runs.
I compare Bret Boone to a kiss from a rose on the gray.
I think metsguy's status in this poll is summed up very well by Neil Young: "Know when you see him, nothing can free him. Step aside, open wide, it's the loner." Nothing wrong with that. ;) Either that or he's an iconoclast. Nah, he's just a troll. :D
From 01-03' Boone was one of the top 2nd Basemans in the game with Alfonso Sorriano. He always had a good glove and had an MVP type season in 01'. If you stretch out those 3 seasons and make them more like 8 seasons, he could be a boarderline HOFer...maybe.....
It seems like Ive seen many other threads like this 100's of times and will probably see another 100 before people get it.
Wait...Who am I kidding....
Is Nick Punto a Hall of Famer? That is the question
Well, it failed, because everybody except you knows that Bret Boone was, overall, an average player that had 2 superb seasons and Bobby Grich was an excellent player that was among the best second basemen in the game for his entire career (whether or not they believe he's a HoFer).
I don't know what this means. A lot of people have known about Bobby Grich. You used awards in your argument "for" Boone. Grich made 6 ASG's, twice as many as Boone. He won 4 Gold Gloves, 1 more than Boone. He received MVP votes in 5 years (2 more than Boone).
He did. Why didn't he get more than he did? Because he has a great make up for an underrated player - low offensive environment, value from walks and defense.Quote:

Shut up. Like I said before I won't be some humor box or joke machine.
lololololololol this is funny.

Metsguy234 (3:48:04 PM): do you think i legit mean that lol

As I said, grow up. And get a life.
Why do you guys all hate me? I just try to be a part of the community and you guys are mean to me.
I'll try this one more time.
Do you all want him to stop? Really?
STOP ****ING FEEDING HIM.
You all complain about him trolling, yet EVERY GODDAMN TIME he starts up an obvious trolling thread like this one, you all buy right in to it. He puts the hook in the water and you all basically grab it and jam it in to your own mouths, then help him reel you in.
It's a 50-50 street. He's responsible for doing it in the first place. ALL OF YOU WHO KEEP FEEDING IT are responsible for making it 'interesting' enough for him that he continues doing it.
There's a reason why I hardly ever respond to a thread or post by metsguy.
