Urban meyer to step down as gators head coach

Re: Urban meyer to step down as gators head coach
Another reason why the Gators won't be as good next year.

Re: Urban meyer to step down as gators head coach
hmm seems intersting overall and i wonder about the timing ... While the reports say its a health issue, but others say theres no major issues with his health.
I trulty hope that this is more a "lifesytle-choice" if you will, than an medical issue with him or a family member.
Not being a gator fan, I do have respect for Meyer, he's been a great coach where he's been and, by all account a stand up guys in a profession (college coaching) where the majority seem to be scumbags.
Granted if in two months he winds up coaching an NFL team - a take that back.

Re: Urban meyer to step down as gators head coach
i'm shocked, well at least surprised taht Notre Dame didn't wait a week longer, as there was talk they wanted to do so and see if they could acquire Meyer???
i'm going to assume that Meyer isn't going to coach as I think if offered the Notre Dame spot it would've been sexier than going pro...but I could see how a coach would want to chance the pro game so who knows. If i were a better man and forced to bet i'd gamble he stays out of coaching for a year or two. To be honest though, i wouldn't bet this one if given a choice lol.

Brian Kelly got Notre Dame's job
Unless Notre Dame wants two head coaches

This definitely smells like a jump to the NFL.
What is it with SEC coaches never able to just come out and say i'm leaving so I can go somewhere else (Saban, Petrino)

It's ok. Anyway I think Kelly will be a good coach. Notre Dame ain't the coaching destination it used to be. Meyer or any other a-1 coach probably wouldn't even want it.

Re: Urban meyer to step down as gators head coach
everything I am hearing says this had more to do with his health and his desire for a more "complete lifestyle" whatever that may mean.
Either way, he may not coach again, or at least not for a lil while.

Yeah, but signing a contract extension in August seems to be at odds with the various things I've heard (like he has been thinking about stepping away for a few years).
And with the various things coaches have said in the last few years only to go and coach somewhere else rather quickly...It's hard to take it all at face value.
Someone mentioned Washington...lol. Not sure if the Skin's want another former Gator coach.

Come back to Colorado State...Come back to Colorado State...Come back to Colorado State...

Re: Urban meyer to step down as gators head coach
Meyer is still going to work for the University.
To suggest he's making up a bunch of bologna about his health just to make a jump in a year, well, he'd be a pretty gigantic douchebag to do that. I don't know why the health problems are so hard to believe anyway, he got rushed to the hospital after the SEC title game this year.
Anyway, this ****ing blows. Another cherry on top of the worst sports season in memory. **** 09 man.

Re: Urban meyer to step down as gators head coach
31 years ago, when John Madden stepped down as head coach of the Oakland Raiders at a even younger age than Meyer, citing vague health concerns, most people thought that there was really something else going on, or at least the health problems were of a nature that he would take off a couple years or so, and then come back to coaching--but he never coached again. That might be the best historical parallel, assuming that Meyer isn't a lying scumbag and actually does have some health concerns. And I see no reason for him to lie about it. I mean, I understand why coaches feel compelled to say that they're staying where they are and have no plans of leaving right up to the moment that it's announced that they're taking a different job, but I can't see any reason for a coach to resign in order to pursue a different job and make up health concerns as a reason.
I do expect that Meyer will coach again, but not next season.

I agree, but with so many college coaches being douches its always in the back of your mind, but from everything I've heard Meyer is a solid guy so its mostly likely just what he says.
( But how about after the Vikes Fold this year and Childress gets fired, they take tebow in the late 1st and then talk Meyer into coaching them?)

You can give Meyer the benefit of the doubt (and he would be one of the very few college coaches who would be truthful if he doesn't go to the NFL next year), but looking at the situation in Cleveland (although he was born closer to Cincinnati)...it should be a interesting offseason.
Meyer wouldn't be the biggest douche...don't forget Petrino who left the Falcons during the season, or Saban who constantly said he wasn't leaving the Dolphins. Those guys were bigger douches...I think even Brian Kelly who took the Irish job was a big douche for leaving before probably Cincinnati's biggest game in a long long time.

Re: Urban meyer to step down as gators head coach
Yeah but those guys just left. IF Meyer wanted to leave, he would just go take another job. Why "make up" all sorts of health issues? Especially when the actual health issues are well-documented.

Well seeing how he just signed a huge contract extension in August, maybe it how a clause for him to get out for health reasons. Who knows, but I wouldn't be surprised if Meyer is coaching next fall. If the past few years in sports have proven one thing....it's you can never trust what a athlete or coach says at face value. But maybe Meyer goes out like Madden did. That would definitely be a nice change of pace, and would put Meyer above a lot of coaches in my opinion, and it would be a huge shame to lose a coach like that, but it would be nice to see someone actually put there family/health first.

That won't happen, at least not the Childress getting fired part. They just gave him a long term extension a few weeks ago....

Re: Urban meyer to step down as gators head coach
Well, now he's saying that he's not resigning, just taking a leave of absense.

Re: Urban meyer to step down as gators head coach
Florida coaches must just have a thing for pretending to leave and then change their minds a day later.
