Dan Wetzel attacks the BCS for a third straight season...
*sigh*
Sure i guess if your goal is to crown a Champion, BUT a champion is not the best team.. it is the best team over a short period of time.
NCAA football has never been about crowning a champion its been about determining the best, most accomplished team.
The polls would still be just a screwy if have a playoff and these no reason to think that a tournament of 16 will solve anymore issues than a tournament of two.
I think the BCS can be fixed if we don't start polls until say week 6 or so. The pre-season polls are what screws teams.
What Wetzel states in the beginning about how Texas is playing Alabama because their name is Texas...this is true. But this factor plays in heavily with preseason polls.
Sure, Florida is a great team. But if they hadn't been preseason number 1, if they hadn't been the greatest team in college football history with 11 returning starters on defense and THE TIM TEBOW at QB would they have been number 1 come SEC title time? Doubtful.
Polls are crazy, they always will be. But the preseason poll is a way for schools and the NCAA to generate interest in games that really shouldn't generate interest.
Also, the preseason games against cupcakes should stop.
Yes and no. The preseason/early season polls just publish the thoughts; the early preconceptions of the teams that will pervade through out the season. Even if voting didn't start till week 10, Florida would still have been number one and Texas number three.
Brand name bias will exist no matter what
I think if it can be proven that there is more money to be made by having a playoff, things would certainly change. I believe that is the only reason things havent changed, is because these people believe by having these bowl games, they make more money this way.
Most major changes in sports is just a way to make more revenue.
Sure theres the money side, but the real point is that a playoff system dosen't give any more guarantee of a definitive "best team" than the current system.
Lets say we get that 16 team playoff -- the FF is bama v fla and TCU v Texas
what if Florida edges Bama and then wins the final v texas...
Whose number 1? 15-1 Bama? 15-1 Fla 15-1 Texas? 14-1 TCU 13-1 boise? 13-1 Cincy?
Maybe.
Florida didn't have that great of an early season. They should have lost to Arkansas.
Texas and Alabama would probably still be playing for the national title...but maybe not.
And any chance of a maybe is good enough for me to take away preseason polls that have become meaningless imo. Apart from giving the top teams an unfair edge.
The champion is Florida.
And that's the only argument anyone can make. Florida WON the championship. What else can anyone say?
Pro sports determine a champion, not a best team. And no one has a problem with that. College basketball determines a champion, not a best team. I don't see anyone writing article after article about how terrible the NCAA Basketball system is.
Other then the fact that it was settled on the field and not in a news room or computer formula.
Really why is florida a better team then alabama, cuz of when they one the matchups? even though Bama dominated florida in one game and flordia maybe barely edged bama in another? the polls would be just as screwed up only we'd have.
Everyone always wants something different, the grass is always greener etc, if there's a playoff there will still be complaints.. They can change thing for the sake of changing them.. call if fair.. call it what ever you want but there wil never be a pefect system, poeple will always want one more game vs the two best teams.
You're grasping at straws.
If Alabama lost to Florida in a National Playoff who would complain? And if they did, would they have any valid points? No.
The NFL has this happen all the time. You want to prove you are the national champion? PROVE IT. And beat Florida again. If you can't do that, you aren't the champion, and that is that.
Are the 07 Patriots the best team to ever step on the field? Probably. Are they champions? Nope.
Prove to me you are the best by winning the games that count. If you want to complain, complain. But you lost.
It all comes down to these words: Settle it on the field.
If you want the ring, win the games. 'Nuff said.
Decent plan, what I would like is to take away the scheduling from the schools themselves. That way there is no specific giveaway games that only are scheduled as a easy win (well should be easy win)
This way there would be a better chance to see something like TCU vs Florida or Boise State vs Texas during the season. (and maybe let each team declare a rivalry game outside their conference..that way we don't lose ND vs USC, and Navy vs Army type games)
With way too many bowls, you could cut down probably half of them and be able to add a game to the season for teams.
I think this would definitely help in cutting down the idea of mid majors aren't as good and would probably increase the ability for teams to recruit outside their comfort zone.
Of course this is a "wild" idea that would never be able to happen.
