This Year in Baseball Awards
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/awards/y2009/tyib/index.jsp
Voting has been open for over a month, but I just remembered to check today. Voting's still open for another couple of weeks. I don't know if this is the first year in which they're actually awarding trophies to plays or not, since I don't recall it saying as much in past years, but this year it does say that the winners will be given trophies on the field in 2010.
My votes:
Hitter: Albert Pujols
Starter: Zack Greinke
Rookie: Andrew McCutchen
Manager: Ron Washington
Closer: Mariano Rivera
Setup: Michael Wuertz
Defense: Ryan Zimmerman (How is Franklin Gutierrez NOT an option? *sigh*)
Performance: Mark Buerhle's perfect game
Play: Dewayne Wise's catch preserving Buerhle's perfect game
Moment: Angels pay tribute to Adenhart
Oddity: Cleveland Seagull incident
Executive: Jack Zduriencik
Unsung Star: Ben Zobrist (What about Chase Utley?! :))
Postseason Moment: Teixeira/A-Rod ALDS Game 2 (Choke artist extraordinaire Alex Rodriguez is a candidate for 3 separate moments in the postseason)

Re: This Year in Baseball Awards
I think the only real choice for oddity was the bee attack at Petco

A walk-off hit that bounces off a seagull is pretty damn odd.

So is an hour game delay while everyone waits for the beekeeper to show up.
Although I forgot that that hit was a walk-off.

Of course, they're both odd. I just voted for my favorite. There's no right or wrong answer there lol

He only made one homer pick.

Two. Carpenter over Greinke and Mozeliak over Zduriencik. But those were probably the only Cards who were options.
-
Re: This Year in Baseball Awards
Well Moz did have a pretty good year.

Mozeliak over Zduriencik isn't really a homer pick.

Zduriencik helped a team improve from 61-101 to 85-77 in one season. A 24-win swing. He also netted the best defensive player in baseball, and prospects, for practically nothing. Not to mention sign a guy who hit 30+ homers to a contract worth $1.4M. Mozeliak improved a team that already has a few stars, including the best player in baseball, by five wins.

Be honest, if you weren't a Mariner fan, would you be taking issue with his pick? ;):):p

What does Huntington have to do with it? :p I'd assume that if you weren't a Mariners fan, your pick would still be Zduriencik.... I just don't think you'd be calling him out like you are. Either way, it's really not a big deal. It's not like he picked Ed Wade, and it's not like his vote is going to decide the thing.

Yeah, just sayin' though... :) And when I mentioned Huntington, I meant that Mozeliak is third or fourth on my list. Yes, part of the reason I really like Z is because I'm a Mariners fan, but I would also pick Huntington over Mozeliak anyways.

Re: This Year in Baseball Awards
Did the Mariners make the postseason? No. And 94% of the people who are going to vote are going to have homerism.
-
Re: This Year in Baseball Awards
I voted Brian Cashman 88 times because he kept Derek Jeter.

I'd bet money GMZ wins.

Not sure this should have to do much with a serious GM evaluation. A first year GM taking over a roster that has been ran by the likes of Bill Bavasi would need to be a miracle-worker to get the team into the playoffs. I think postseason or not should be a secondary concern to the individual moves the GM made and whether or not he has a coherent plan and is working towards that plan.

He's saying that the guy was wrong to choose Mozeliak over Z. I'm saying you're never wrong by picking a GM who's team made the playoffs.

depends on the circumstances. Like, say, if that GM just took over a really good team but didn't do anything.

You definitely can be. Take the 2002/2003 Giants. Brian Sabean isn't a good GM. Those teams were good largely because of Barry Bonds, a player Sabean inherited. I don't feel like looking into the state of GM's in that time period, but I'd wager a guess that if you chose Brian Sabean as GM of the year in either of those seasons, you very well could be very wrong.
