The marginal benefit of Halladay over Billingsley simply isn't worth the massive increase in cost and loss of team control.
I don't think the Dodgers should avoid trading for Halladay, I just think that offering Kershaw or Billingsley would defeat the purpose.
Yeah...a marginal difference.
4.03 ERA in the NL vs. 2.79 ERA in the AL
Real marginal...only a run and a half lower in the more difficult league.
Not what I meant by marginal....

I don't see how having a player on your team the year of his free agency lets you "beat other teams to the punch." How did that work out for the Cards and Holliday? and Angels and Tex? The only reason the Mets signed Johan was because they gave him a huge contract anyway, and the Yankees or Red Sox weren't likely to go much higher than that.
I kind of recall that they negotiated that there would be a contract extension before the Johan trade occurred or something, but either way, I highly doubt Halladay is going to be giving hometown discounts to his next team.
When a player wants to hit free agency and get his money, very little can stop him. Just look at LeBron.
How do you know? You know what his contract demands are?
Best case scenario for me: We deal him to a contender for a good haul, doesn't resign there, and we get him back for 2011. :D
That's wishful thinking, but one can dream.
I would definately give up Billingsley if I'm the Dodgers to get Roy (assuming they can work out a contract negotiation).....but if I'm the Jays I need more than Billingley. Roy is proven to be one of the best pitchers in baseball for the past few years and is still relatively young.
I would also give up Kershaw to get Roy....Kershaw has less than 1 good season who knows what he'll end up being, you know what you get with Halladay.
