My picks were Jerry Manuel and Connie Mack.

No, not Scosia. Scioscia won.

I voted for Girardi and Torre. Large market managers FTW!

Uh, yeah. Let's see when the year started John Lackey, Kelvim Escobar and Ervin Santana were on the D.L. Then Nick Adenhart died. Hunter, Guerrero and Kendrick were all injured for big chunks of time too. Plus, anyone who has to live and die with the limp wristed closer every night or try 38 year old Darren Oliver out or 30 year old journeyman Jason Bulger because everyone else is either injured, wet behind the ears or just plain sucked deserves some respect. The only starting pitcher he could count on to do well on a regular basis and who stayed healthy was Jered Weaver. Personally, I think he should put a call in to your favourite team's co-ace (and everyone's favourite headhunter) Josh Beckett and thank him for throwing that 95+ mph fastball behind Abreu's head and making those ridiculous comments in the press conference after the game 3 days after Adenhart died. Real classy tough guy, real classy.
I agree with the general sentiment that the award is pointless because managers don't have a huge influence on a team's performance, although after suffering through the Alex Rios in the 3 hole (.255/.311/.411 as a #3), Vernon Wells in the cleanup spot (.261/.314/.390 as a #4 - oh god, I just threw up in my mouth) s**tshow of 2009, I'm not sure I can agree wholeheartedly with this.
Did I mention Kevin Millar and Rod Barajas spent some time in the cleanup spot too? Ozzie Guillen wasn't too enamoured with Rios. He started him off in the #3 spot and gave him one more chance there. In Toronto he had 61 games in the 3-spot while the 6 and 7 spots were his next most frequent positions in the order. With Guillen, his most frequent spot was 7th and then 8th and then 9th. Somewhere between the two extremes is probably right like #6 and by the end of the year, it was not at all. Then again batting order isn't supposed to be all that relevant to run scoring anyway. The point is I think Cito Gaston has an incredible ability to f**k up the Jays offense and I can't wait for him to be in his "special advisor" role, otherwise known as the soft boot out the door. :(

I think the negative effects of a manager can be much greater than any positive effects.

Hey, I voted for Connie Mack. Don't blame me.

Don't get me wrong, Scoisia is a good manager, but not in the American League. His style is much more set for a National League team

Re: Tracy, Scioscia are Managers of the Year
If one of your primary players dies in the middle of the season and you still win the division going away, you should win a manager of the year award.
Both were pretty solid choices. I don't think Tracy is a good manager, but if you show up and take a floundering team to the postseason, that's worthy of respect.

I thought maybe Ron Gardenhire would get the nod.

2 losing seasons in 10.
5 division titles.
4 years guiding teams to over 95 wins.
.556 overall winning percentage.
I would say he is a fairly good manager in the American League.
But maybe you have a different idea of what a good manager is.
