Oh boy......Derek Jeter and another GG
I don't know how Jeter's UZR and other fielding stats were this year, but I do know that he improved from previous years. However, I'm going to guess that he wasn't the top defensive SS in the league this year.
While I am a Yankee supporter and Derek Jeter fan, I can just imagine how many more anti-Jeter comments are going to arise from this. And people love to hate him but if you think about it, he's not giving himself Hank Aaron award or GGs...he's just taking them. What is he supposed to do, refuse them?
On a side note, any guesses on Jeter's new contract? I seriously wouldn't be surprised by anything, but if he can hit for .290 or so and stay healthy this year, I'm going to guess 4 years 80 million. But again, I wouldn't be surprised by 6 years $130 million, either.

Re: Oh boy......Derek Jeter and another GG
Derek Jeter is getting old. I say 3-5 yrs left. It does not matter how well he plays he is still going to get resigned. If he hits 270. they are still going to resign him because the fans love him and they want to see him retire as a yankee. (a.k.a Yankee fan)
-
Re: Oh boy......Derek Jeter and another GG
It's a worthless award. 100% worthless.
-
Re: Oh boy......Derek Jeter and another GG
I don't hate on Jeter generally, unless he talks maybe.
I hate more the reporters, commentators, writers, etc who's sole goal it is to kiss his ass the most.

If he hits .270, I would hope that the yankees resign him as long as he is still around an average fielding shortstop or better. A .270 avg for a shortstop in a stacked lineup who can at least field his position is an excellent thing to have. Shortstops are not the easiest thing to come by especially if they can bat .270 or better and be an average fielder or better. Most shortstops in the league are either a very good defensive shortstop with very little offense, or a good hitting shorstop for their position and struggle in the field. I am hoping we will see that change though with the up and coming shortstops that are starting to bloom in the majors.
As for the fact he won the gold glove, I really don't care. My guess is he will be treated like Cal Ripken Jr. all the way up until he retires.

Re: Oh boy......Derek Jeter and another GG
Gold Gloves are pretty worthless, everybody already knows this. Much like the Elias Rankings.
-
Re: Oh boy......Derek Jeter and another GG
Scratch up another ward to the greatest man to ever play the game!
Probably will sweep awards this year. Cy Young, MVP, Gold Glove, Hank Aaron, Silver Slugger, DHL Delivery man of the Year.

Re: Oh boy......Derek Jeter and another GG
I think the bigger question to be asked is why Mauer won the GG when he only caught 109 games.

Gerald Laird's data got corrupt.

Oh no doubt they're going to resign him. I just meant if he hits .290 or something, then he wouldn't have to take a pay cut.
Imagine he hits .270 for little power with a low OBP this year. The contract is going to incredibly iffy to negotiate...

Because it sounds nice rather than Laird

Re: Oh boy......Derek Jeter and another GG
This just means Jeter's fielding skills are on par with Rafael Palmeiro's
-
Re: Oh boy......Derek Jeter and another GG
It's not really Jeter's fault that he's overrated. I mean, he doesn't tell all the writers to act like he's great at fielding when he isn't.

Did someone say it's his fault? o.O Everyone knows it's not his fault, obviously. It's the writers :)

yes, both are worthless, but the problem is that not everyone knows this....intelligent fans know this, the general public does not, and the average fan likely does not.

True, but I personally don't really care about what the general public thinks. I know that Jeter isn't a gold glove SS and the people I talk to know this, so it's w/e for me.

he is working for me now, it's kind of cool, he foudn in his laptop bag the phone directory for everyone, this included mozliak, larussa, and dewitt's home phone numbers, cell phone numbers, email and office numbers.

Wait why did Guttierez not win a gold glove?

Because the GG's are worthless and he told them he doesn't want to win an award based on defense if Rafael Palmeiro can win one.

Because the Gold Gloves aren't an actual measure of defensive prowess. [/what everyone else said]
Gold Gloves are a combination of like three things - defensive reputation, offense, and having won in the past. Torii Hunter and Ichiro Suzuki have won umpteen years in a row, so, they will continue to win every year until they stop playing most likely. That means there's effectively one GG spot for outfielders that aren't named Hunter or Ichiro. For some reason, the coaches picked the young guy with the tools that played in just 119 games over the ridiculously good Franklin Gutierrez.
-
Re: Oh boy......Derek Jeter and another GG
I am the biggest Ozzie Smith fan ever, but he won a few, that he could have easily lost to other players possibly more deserving, but no one was going to win over him as long as he was playing a good solid shortstop each year.
I love him, and not to take anything away from him, but building on what HGM said, i am not so sure he really deserved some of the final one's he won.

Re: Oh boy......Derek Jeter and another GG
Ranking of each winner by UZR:

SS - Derek Jeter (5th of 10)
OF - Adam Jones (17th of 34)
OF - Torii Hunter (13th of 34)
OF - Ichiro Suzuki (12th of 34)

Because the voters misspelled his name like you did, so it was declared invalid.

I didn't understand Adam Jones either. That one really bothered me. Knowing me, I have never taken a look at these UZR stats of yours Houston and instead I have just looked at him basic fielding stats and it really doesn't look that impressive. The only thing that some what stands out is his assists in centerfield. Other than that, he is not really that impressive to me.
Now, that Mark Teixeira ranking really surprised me but of course I didn't really think he was very worthy either. Who was ranked first at 1st base?
-
Re: Oh boy......Derek Jeter and another GG
Adam Jones started off really well and made a bunch of plays. First impressions can be very strong.

Yeah I am sure that could be the reason. So basically when the Orioles were ignored after the All Star break, so was Adam Jones' play? That would make sense if so.

Kendry Morales led the AL in UZR this year. UZR needs more than one season to be a really accurate barometer of a fielder's ability, though.
Adam Jones had a very good UZR last year. Lacked the offense, though. Good first impression + offensive improvement + All Star Game = Gold Glove - even if your fielding regresses!

because only 5 other players caught more than that Pierzynski(131), Laird(135), Suzuki(135), Barajas(125), Navarro(113)..
So 109 isn't that low of an amount.

Hmmm interesting. I wonder sometimes with Kevin Youkilis bouncing around a lot between 3rd and 1st this year, if he would have any better effect of winning a gold glove over Texiera or not. Of course I am saying this without knowing his UZR.

Over the 2007-2009 period, Youkilis is first in the AL in UZR at 16.8. Here are the top 5 in the AL for that period:
Kevin Youkilis 16.8
Casey Kotchman 14
Daric Barton 7.9
Lyle Overbay 6.2
Ross Gload 5.5

Re: Oh boy......Derek Jeter and another GG
Wow. Pretty impressive. It always seems too that the main stream media and even fans view Texiera's worth as a fielder higher than Youkilis. Very interesting.

Re: Oh boy......Derek Jeter and another GG
Can anyone find that stat to see how much Derek Jeter was worth over the last couple years?
A chart of most overpaid/underpaid would be great, too.
