So the expansion draft is over and some good players have been snapped up by both new franchises. Teams such as the Yankees, Dodgers and the Diamondbacks were the hardest hit but with their stockpile of talent they should be able to recover.
Both these franchises have a decent chance even in their first year of being competitive.
We will be speaking to new Vancouver Miners GM Steven Smith about his thoughts of the draft from his teams perspective.
Re: Baseball in Vancouver
2nd January 2013, Reporter from the Vancouver Sun:
Reporter: So Mr. Smith are you happy about how the way the draft went?
Steven Smith: Hi, yes I'm reasonably happy with how it went. At the end of the day, the teams protect their best players so we have to try and make the best of what we can get and I am confident we can do that.
Reporter: Do you think the expansion draft should be set out a different way to benefit new teams more then?
Steven Smith: No I'm not saying that, it would foolish to allow a new team to cherry pick the best players, that just can't happen. Teams have the right to protect their best players and it's just something we have to work with.
Reporter: Are you happy with the mixture of players you got in the draft?
Steven Smith: Yes I am. we set out our stall to try and get 6 outfielders, 6 infielders, 2/3 catchers, 7 starting pitchers and 8 relievers. This would allow the 5 last picks for us to pick the best of what was available and I'm pretty happy with the mixture of older and younger players we managed to get.
Reporter: So you say you're happy with the haul you managed to get, what are you expectations for the season, realistically?
Steven Smith: Well we can't get too over-excited, the first few years will be very tough but my personal opinion our main goal will be trying to reach the .500 mark at the end of the season.
Reporter: OK thank you and good luck.
Steven Smith: Thanks, I think we'll need it!

February 16th 2013:
BREAKING NEWS: FORMER A'S AND CUBS PITCHER HARDEN TO MANAGER MINERS
http://www.thecubdom.com/pictures/20...chHarden02.jpg
Yup you heard right, after a career plagued by injuries, Rich Harden finally gave up on baseball at the end of the 2012 season after needing another knee operation. However the British Columbia native has been talked round to enter management at only 31 years old. This is a very risky move and whether it will pay off only time will tell.
The Vanouver Miners will enter their first season in Baseball in 2013 and with just a couple of weeks until Spring Training starts it was key for the Miners to get a Manager in place ASAP. Talks apparently didn't last long and Harden was keen to take over the Miners who are based in British Columbia where Harden was born.
Re: Baseball in Vancouver
He should be a player-manager lol
Re: Baseball in Vancouver
April 1st 2013: Miners pen Fielder to one year deal
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...9557698%29.jpg
The Vancouver Miners made their first ever Free Agent signing today as they signed first baseman slugger Prince Fielder to a one year $2.4M deal. Fielder who's contract with the Atlanta Braves expired at the end of the 2012 season had not been picked up and with the 2013 season starting later today, GM Steven Smith made the deal.
'When you see a guy like Prince who hasn't got a club you've gotta make a deal. He's a brilliant hitter and will be great for this ballclub. He has experience and is a real slugger, someone we can rely on to hit 20 home runs whilst still hitting for decent contact.' Smith said.
It is likely that Fielder who hit .236/.339/.387/.726 last year with the Braves will go into the DH spot for the Miners as they have Chad Tracy a better gloveman already at first.

Re: Baseball in Vancouver
April 1st 2013: MINERS MAKE FIRST TRADE
The Vancouver Miners made their first trade as a MLB club today, they sent SP Scott Richmond (84), RP Jesse Crain (81), C Gerald Laird (81) and young RP Kyle Smith (51/77) plus $2million to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for SP Aaron Crow (82/92) and 3B prospect Luke Francke (66/87).
Richmond who was earning $7m until entering Free Agency at the end of the year was a big earner, Laird had competition from both Jarrod Saltalamacchia and John Buck so most likely wouldn't have seen much playing time and Crain would have started at AAA. Smith is a good young prospect who could either turn out pretty good or blow up before he hits the Majors.
Crow and Franck will both report to AAA Georgian Expos with Crow likely ro be called up quite soon.

GM's thoughts: What a great way to introduce baseball to Vancouver, 3 wins against a good White Sox team, the pitching in games 2 & 3 were fantastic and the offense really was potent the whole series. The bullpen looks strong and things look good so far but let's not get carried away. Attendances are slightly disappointing at an average of 23,269 but hopefully that'll improve.

GM's thoughts: Wow, 2 series and 2 series wins in Vancouver, home form is gonna be key if we want to get around .500 come season end. 5-1 on the season and we couldn't have asked for anything more (well maybe 6-0 haha). The bullpen has been amazing so far, 2 ER in 26.2 IP. The starting pitching has been hit and miss but hopefully that'll change as the guys get more consistent.
Re: Baseball in Vancouver
good start, i like this so far, keep it up.
Re: Baseball in Vancouver
I like it so far. I'll try my best to follow.
Re: Baseball in Vancouver
April 6th 2013: MINERS GM UNHAPPY WITH MLB
Steven Smith has apparently launched a scathing attack on MLB bosses and specifically targetted MLB commissioner Bud Selig. Selig who was supposed to retire last year but extended his contract to 2014 was described as 'hopeless' by Smith.
'Why doesn't he just retire? Surely there's somebody out there who's not senile who's willing to do the job?' Smith added.
I bet you're wondering what the outburst was about? Well apparently Smith only found out on Monday night after the Miners 6-3 win over the Tigers that this years schedules were unbalanced and that one game series would be played throughout the year. This will start tomorrow night as the Miners travel for their first away trip to San Diego to face the Padres.
Selig wasn't available for comment but a statement from the MLB read that Smith's comments would be 'investigated' and that unbalanced schedules were in place just for the first year of the new Franchises.

GM's thoughts: Should have won the game, 1 run lead in the 9th with 2 outs and a pinch hit double by Kyle Blanks means a blown save for Gonzalez. Padres win it in the 11th, tough loss but we're still doing well. 2 days off now then one at the Diamondbacks followed by us hosting 3 against the Royals.
Re: Baseball in Vancouver
9th April 2013: Podsednik ruled out for 2 and a half months.
http://www.670-thescore.com/blog/wp-...podsednik1.jpg
Scott Podsednik, the Miners' leadoff hitter and CF has been sidelined for around 80 days with a torn elbow ligament. This is a big blow as Podsednik was hitting well (12-23) and had stolen 6 bases. It is likely Brian Anderson will take over as the every day leadoff hitter.

GM's thoughts: Well now we know what it feels like to go ahead in the 9th. Nice to see even when our starter isn't great we still get through the game and pick up a gritty win. It's a shame to lose Podsednik when he was looking like having a great year, we wish him a speedy recovery.

I like it. Can't wait to see what happens to Bud.
Re: Baseball in Vancouver
Why does Romo pitch five innings in the first two games?
Re: Baseball in Vancouver
Why not? He's my highest earning player at $6.5m and he's probably my best reliever. Whilst he's throwing the ball well i'll keep him on the mound, just the way I manage.
