Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
the devils advocate question is then,
why would he do it intentionally if it would appear so obviously intentional ?
-
Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
Protect his hitters? Get back at the other team for plunking Cabrera?
He's 20 and trying to fit in with a big league club for the first year. He hasn't really been involved with stuff at this level, so maybe was not expecting any repercussions.

that IS a reasonable answer.
i still disagree.
its refreshing to disagree with someone without all the rancor.

Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
I still think that, if it were intentional, someone on the Tigers would've known whats up. No one on the team looked like they at all expected it to happen. I doubt he would just decide randomly to plunk Youkilis to send a message without telling anyone.

Looked like everyone but Raburn knew lol

How so? The catcher Avila was not in position to block the charge in case it happened. If he had known it was coming, I'm sure he would've been in position to get in the way. And if the catcher doesn't know, I doubt anyone else did.
And upon looking at the video that was posted in this thread, I don't know why you think anyone else knew it was coming. Inge and Santiago were pretty late getting there too.

exactly...espn broke this down this morning. The 3B and SS were ultra quick to react as if they knew it was coming. The 1B and catcher were slow.

It's okay. I feel comfortable, I put together some good points and a decent argument.
I can see the other side - Youk lost his temper, and his stance is odd. Plus if I were a tiger fan, I'd be upset that I lost what should have been a winnable game (and that I got Lowell hitting some homers instead of Youk walking, argh).
But if we're going to disagree, let's at least call each other ignorant or something. Else this whole exchange will just look civil and silly on a board like this. :D

Inge and Santiago both are guys with excellent reflexes, so, naturally, they would be the first to react when they see someone wildly charging their pitcher.
The catcher reacting slow is evidence, to me, that it wasn't planned. Usually, when this sort of thing is planned, the catcher knows and as soon as the pitch comes is ready to get up and get between the batter and pitcher.

Right. Of course the 3B and SS reacted quickly, look what ****ing positions they play. If those guys don't have quick reflexes, do you really think they could be capable of playing 3B or SS?
And still, looking at the video, they don't get to the mound before Youkilis does. Even if they did react quickly, I feel like they would've been much closer and gotten there much faster if it was planned.

I just looked this up. Porcello has hit two batters this year, but he hasn't hit Youkilis twice. His other HBP was Matt Holliday.

Alloutwar fail. But, they're close though. Both bald, both hit well. Easy mistake to make, I suppose.

Not me, buddy. Maybe MLB has it wrong? http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/news/ar...=.jsp&c_id=bos

Porcello -- coincidence or not -- has hit two batters this season. Both times, it has been Youkilis.
thats the first link I looked at this morning. If they are wrong - completely possible - than I apologize for spreading misinformation propigated by MLB. Not an AOW fail, though - those don't exist. :)

Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
Porcello started the June 2nd game when Youk got hit, but Lyon was pitching. Someone should introduce mlb.com with the idea of relief pitching

Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
youk appears to be heading towards a career year in terms of getting beaned.

Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
I didn't bother reading everythign in this thread, but i still adametly disagree with the thought of every throwing at someone intentionally. poor sportsmanship...you aren't "protecting" your players by doing it, you are just being a dumbass. i understand competive natures as well as anyone, but this was down right retarded, especially by youk.....if someone does intentionally throw at you, just move on, the best way to "stand up for yourself" as youk described his reasoning, is to ****ing hit, or score a run after the guy hits you.
****ing grow up.

Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.

Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
Pitchers shouldn't intentionally hit batters, if they do, the batter should charge the mound.
-
Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
no, neither should happen....on either part.
there is no 'good' reason to do so, none.
-
Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
They'll both appeal. Porcello will miss, what? One start at the most.

Youkilis isn't appealing. He's starting the suspension tonight. Porcello is appealing and will hopefully get it reduced. Even at five games, at most it'll just push him back a day or something.
-
Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
he will likely just be pushed back a day from his next start

The a$$hat Tony Kornheiser on PTI today was ripping apart Rick. Saying he meant it and should have gotten a much longer suspension than Youkilis.
Talk about off-base.

After being plunked square in the back, Youkilis took no time to toss his bat toward the bat boy and huff and puff toward the mound. Porcello throws his hands out and takes a few steps back to get off the uneven mound and to probably sell that it was unintentional. Everyone knows it was intentional, and honestly, I don't blame Porcello for being a little scared. Youkilis is a big guy and remember, Porcello is just 20-years old. Youkilis was cutting down trees and inventing the gayest batting stance ever when Porcello was still eating oatmeal and watching Blues Clues.
It's Hilarious.

Now a bench clearing brawl between the Giants and Dodgers. Jeez.

MLB Network says both are appealing.

The headline says "Youkilis, Porcello appeal suspensions" but then the second paragraph:
Quote:
Youkilis will begin his suspension during Wednesday night's game against Detroit. Porcello appealed, and no penalty will take effect until the process is complete.
-
Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
Ok apparently no one is appealing anything. Why is the press so ****ing useless??

Porcello was originally appealing it, but he dropped the appeal.

It probably works out for the Tigers anyways. Porcello is going to have his innings limited in some way so missing a start won't hurt him.
