is or is not his elbow close to the plate every at bat ?
in which case every pitcher has to be thinking
i gotta brush this guy back.
stay in the batters box, you dont get brushed back...
Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
I don't really think Porcello's control is that great, just because he hasn't hit a lot of guys. It's not like it's hard to imagine that a 20 year old would have a 2-seamer slip out of his hand mid-delivery.
Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
It's not hard to imagine, no.
Hitting the same guy twice, while not hitting any of the other 200 guys you face, is odd.
Hitting him after your slugger was hit the previous inning is suspicious.
Hitting him after going high and tight to V-Mart makes it a bit more obvious.
Finally, hitting him the second night in a row pushes it over the edge, I feel. That's a whole lot of personal coincidence to swallow.
Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
the devils advocate question is then,
why would he do it intentionally if it would appear so obviously intentional ?
Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
Protect his hitters? Get back at the other team for plunking Cabrera?
He's 20 and trying to fit in with a big league club for the first year. He hasn't really been involved with stuff at this level, so maybe was not expecting any repercussions.

that IS a reasonable answer.
i still disagree.
its refreshing to disagree with someone without all the rancor.
Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
I still think that, if it were intentional, someone on the Tigers would've known whats up. No one on the team looked like they at all expected it to happen. I doubt he would just decide randomly to plunk Youkilis to send a message without telling anyone.
Re: Youkilis Charges the Mound.
Looked like everyone but Raburn knew lol

How so? The catcher Avila was not in position to block the charge in case it happened. If he had known it was coming, I'm sure he would've been in position to get in the way. And if the catcher doesn't know, I doubt anyone else did.
And upon looking at the video that was posted in this thread, I don't know why you think anyone else knew it was coming. Inge and Santiago were pretty late getting there too.

exactly...espn broke this down this morning. The 3B and SS were ultra quick to react as if they knew it was coming. The 1B and catcher were slow.

It's okay. I feel comfortable, I put together some good points and a decent argument.
I can see the other side - Youk lost his temper, and his stance is odd. Plus if I were a tiger fan, I'd be upset that I lost what should have been a winnable game (and that I got Lowell hitting some homers instead of Youk walking, argh).
But if we're going to disagree, let's at least call each other ignorant or something. Else this whole exchange will just look civil and silly on a board like this. :D

Inge and Santiago both are guys with excellent reflexes, so, naturally, they would be the first to react when they see someone wildly charging their pitcher.
The catcher reacting slow is evidence, to me, that it wasn't planned. Usually, when this sort of thing is planned, the catcher knows and as soon as the pitch comes is ready to get up and get between the batter and pitcher.
