However, the NFL games I watch seem to focus on TOUCHDOWNS per Red Zone opportunity.
Is there an official definition of "Red Zone Efficiency"?
I know red zone efficiency is based on all SCORING CHANCES in the red zone.
i.e. 2 FGM/3 FGA in red zone along with two red zone touchdowns = 4/5 in the red zone.
yeah to my understanding its scoring in the red zone, they sometimes keep a separate stat for touchdowns in the red zone, kind of a conversion stat, but the simple method is just TD+FGM/RZATT
Seems like I see networks refer it to it as touchdown percentage in the red zone. Usually they'll give the league average and present the offensive team's percentage and rank in the league. Coaches usually aren't happy with settling for field goals when they get the ball inside the 20, and if a team is having trouble scoring touchdowns, they're usually referred to as having problems in the red zone.
Clay, your link concerns NCAA Red Zone Efficiency. An article I read says the NFL defines RZE as touchdowns only, while the NCAA uses TD+FG . (That article made the sensible choice of computing points per attempt divided by 7, so a FG counts 3/7 of a TD. But that was the author's own invention.)
